    Johnny Appleseed Campground

    Looked like a ghost town

This small, well-kept Campground is a Fort Wayne city park surrounded by industrial & commercial businesses. The Park is clean with the most modern, clean shower/bath house I’ve seen. Unfortunately, the restroom is located across the street from the campground. The sites were occupied by large RVs but we only saw 2 people sitting outside - no campfires, no cooking, no campers. This was just an over night stopover for us so we didn’t care. I suppose this Campground is used by seasonal workers who just sleep & eat dinner there at the end of their workday. The Campground is never dark with streetlights and and the ambient light from surrounding businesses. I’m sure this campground serves a purpose, just not my purpose. This is definitely NOT a destination.

    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

    Very pleasant

Hope, the owner, is always so friendly & helpful. The restrooms/showers are nice and clean. You can get an entire 4 wheeler dump load of wood for $20. It’s nice dry wood. When we’ve camped in the past during April & October, we got free firewood those months. There’s a nice little camp store. We were given a nice welcome packet at check-in with visitor guides for the area. They recycle also. Pool and small miniature golf course. We really enjoy camping here. We’ve camped on several different sites here. We’ve stayed on the deluxe patio sites a couple of times when they were available. They have patio table & chairs on extra wide concrete pad, gas grill, fire pit & seating area in back.

    Pokagon State Park Campground

    One of Indiana's original parks.

Pokagon was one of the first Indiana state parks, so there's some history here! One of my favorite memories is the toboggan run, which FYI, is seasonal. It's a ton of fun for the whole family. Also, in the winter, there's sledding, ice fishing and cross country skiing. There's a few trails and swimming and boating in the lake in the summer. The campground is standard and has a bathhouse and fire pits at each site (both electric and non-electric). There's a nice Inn as well, if you need a non campgroud place to stay in the winter. It's a great easy trip, even from Chicago. So, come winter or summer!

    Pokagon State Park Campground

    Pokagon State Park

Pokagon State Park has an excellent state park campground. Sites are in a well wooded area situated on 5 different loops (1 non-electric, 4 electric). Many sites are flat (good for tent camping) while others are slightly rolling hills (helps breakup the sites a bit). There is a lot to do in the park including many trails, horse riding (horse stable on site), and lake swimming on a nicely improved beach. Only cons are no full hook up and the fire rings/grills could be improved.

Former pick a spot now it's jt's lakeside campground I think

We have a blast!!!!! Bring your boat or watercraft! Plenty of lakefront camping spots on the barbie chain of lakes. Several (deep, clean) lakes hooked together by channels. Also hook into that big bass or musky!! It's crowded, pretty quiet usually, no showers or running water bathroom facilities. But the view...

    Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday

    A 5 star stay

Love this campground! Events every weekend and some fun for everyone. I will say DONT rent a 4 person bike unless you’re incredibly fit, it is no leisurely stroll 😂 Also, watch out for some of the patio sites, some have a fire pit that would sit directly under an awning. Our patio site though had the pit far out from site and we loved it, the grill even had propane in it to use!

Guide to Albion

Chain O'lakes State Park Dispersed Campsite offers primitive camping options starting at $12 per night for tent sites. The park includes a chain of connected lakes providing paddling routes through northeastern Indiana woodlands. Electric hookup campsites include fire rings and picnic tables on level surfaces. While not free, as some apps might indicate, the dispersed camping area provides basic amenities for overnight visitors.

What to do

Hiking and biking trails: At Pokagon State Park Campground, visitors can explore extensive connected trail systems. "There are trail, beaches, boats, horses... so many things to do," notes reviewer Becky N. The park connects with a nearby nature preserve, offering varied terrain for day hikes.

Swimming and water activities: Multiple pools and water features await at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ at Barton Lake, where families find relief during summer months. "5 pools! water slides cost extra. Food prices are reasonable," reports reviewer J C. The campground offers both indoor and outdoor swimming options, with special areas designed for younger children.

Fishing opportunities: Many local lakes offer fishing access, with some campgrounds providing dedicated ponds. At Ebys Pines, campers can fish in the on-site pond or nearby river. The connected lakes system around Albion makes fishing a primary attraction, with multiple access points throughout the region.

What campers like

Peaceful settings: For quieter glamping near Albion, Indiana, Bixler Lake Park & Campground delivers tranquility. "This is by far the place to just relax. It does have its moments..Holidays and special events. Even then campers here live by the lights out code," says Ray L., who spent nearly a month at the campground.

Cultural experiences: The Amish communities around Shipshewana provide unique cultural experiences. At Shipshewana Trading Place RV Park, campers enjoy proximity to local culture. "Our site was backed up to a horse pasture (in the evening, the horses came over for a quick visit!)," shares Lisa D., highlighting the rural setting that enhances glamping experiences around Albion.

Well-maintained facilities: Cleanliness stands out at many local campgrounds. "The park is beautifully maintained. The bathroom and shower facilities were clean and updated," notes Mary H. about Pokagon State Park. This attention to facility upkeep appears consistently in camper reviews across the region's glamping options.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds in the Albion area operate from April through October, with limited winter availability. Primitive camping options like Chain O'lakes close entirely during winter months, while some RV parks remain partially open with reduced services.

Reservation timelines: Popular sites fill quickly, especially for summer weekends. "Need to plan about 6 months to a 1 year ahead to get in," advises Derrick P. about Jellystone, reflecting the competitive booking situation at premium glamping locations near Albion.

Highway noise: Some campgrounds experience road noise from nearby highways. At Johnny Appleseed Campground, the urban setting means constant ambient sound. "It seems rather secluded, but is definitely in the middle of town," explains Tara W., indicating the trade-off between convenience and wilderness experience.

Tips for camping with families

Activity scheduling: Jellystone Park offers structured activities throughout the day. "Lots of scheduled activities and playgrounds available. Nothing compares to their outdoor pool areas and 2 jumping pillows," shares Tiffany H., suggesting families check activity calendars when planning their days.

Safety considerations: Site selection matters for families with young children. Uneven terrain or proximity to water may require extra supervision. Some luxury glamping options around Albion provide more controlled environments with dedicated play areas.

Educational opportunities: Elkhart RV Resort by Rjourney provides access to manufacturing tours and Amish country experiences. "This clean, well kept campground is really close to grand design. We stayed here to go tour the manufacturers process," notes Robert P., highlighting educational opportunities that complement luxury glamping near Albion.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Several campgrounds feature uneven sites requiring additional equipment. At Pokagon State Park, "Sites are shorter and sometimes uneven," according to J C., suggesting RVers bring leveling blocks and check site specifications before booking.

Utility considerations: Electric service varies between campgrounds. Pokagon State Park offers "Only electric hookups, but good for a short weekend," according to Kristen S., indicating RVers should plan water usage accordingly when glamping around Albion, Indiana.

Parking dimensions: Big rigs require careful site selection at most area campgrounds. Pull-through sites provide easier access but often book quickly. At Ebys Pines, "RV Sites are stacked on each other," notes Leann O., suggesting larger vehicles request specific sites when making reservations.
