Walnut trees drop their fruit onto RVs with surprising force during windy weather, creating a sound like hail on the roof. Buffalo Ridge Campground sits within Brown County State Park's forested hills, where full hookup sites accommodate RVs alongside walk-in tent spots. The campground operates year-round with heated bathhouses during winter months when services are reduced.
Site layouts vary considerably across the loop. Scott B. found site 14 "full shade" but warns it sits "on a ledge" with steep trails leading into wildlife areas below. Site 94 offers complete separation from neighboring campers, while sites closer to the entrance provide easier access but less privacy. Several reviewers note the main road through the campground carries regular traffic that can interrupt evening quiet around the fire.
The park's trail system extends nearly 30 miles through rolling terrain, connecting hiking and mountain biking routes from beginner to expert level. Connectivity to Yellowwood and Hoosier National Forest expands options for longer adventures. The campground provides direct trail access, though some sites have paths running directly behind them. An outdoor pool operates seasonally, while Abe Martin Lodge maintains an indoor pool year-round. The camp store stocks supplies and equipment, and staff provide local recommendations.
Large RVs must enter through the west gate due to a low clearance covered bridge at the north entrance. Margo B. praised the shower facilities as "nicer than what we have seen, and very private with a nice area and plenty of room." The town of Nashville sits 3.7 miles north, offering dining and shopping options. Reservations are available and recommended during fall foliage season when visitor numbers peak significantly.
Description
Nicknamed the "Little Smokies" because of the area's resemblance to the Great Smoky Mountains, Brown County encompasses nearly 16,000 acres of rugged hills, ridges and fogshrouded ravines. Glaciers from the most recent ice ages stopped short of the "hills o'Brown," but their meltwaters helped create the narrow ridges, steep slopes and deep gullies of Brown County State Park. Indiana's largest park is a traditional fall color hot spot, with nearly 20 miles of tree-lined roads and many scenic vistas overlooking miles of uninterrupted forestland.
Campground Check-in/Check-out times are 2 PM Mondays through Saturdays and 5 PM on Sundays and Holidays.
