St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park features a fenced dog park with benches for pets to stretch their legs, along with spacious gravel sites that accommodate both tent and RV camping. The park requires a code to access the dog park area, and pets must be kept on leash throughout the rest of the campground. Cahokia RV Parque offers full hookups with pet-friendly policies and enough space for larger rigs. Draft Kings at Casino Queen RV Park charges a $20 pet fee per stay in addition to the nightly rate, with a designated pet relief area along the perimeter fence. Sites at these campgrounds are generally level and well-maintained, with most offering water and electric hookups. The pet areas are regularly cleaned, though some visitors note that waste receptacles can occasionally be full during busy periods.

The 3-mile paved trail surrounding the lake at St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park provides an excellent walking route for dogs and their owners. Granite City KOA's tiny pens in the back are primarily designed for pet waste relief rather than play areas, with some visitors noting they can become muddy after rain. Most campgrounds enforce standard leash policies outside designated pet areas, typically requiring 6-foot leashes. Campers report feeling safe with their pets at these facilities, with security features like gated access at several locations. When visiting during summer months, early morning or evening walks are recommended to avoid hot pavement that can burn paw pads. The proximity to St. Louis allows pet owners to use these campgrounds as convenient base camps for exploring the region's dog-friendly attractions while having a secure place to return with their pets each evening.

Good location for exploring St. Louis

This campground is fairly close to downtown and very close to lots of shopping. A great place to stay to stock up on supplies before heading west. We stayed 2 nights to have a day to visit the Gateway Arch. The pool and playground seemed nice even though we didn’t use them. Nice dog park for smaller dogs. Several cabins are available along with RV sites. The tent sites are next to a river under large trees. Plenty of spaces for big rigs. Our site was no very level but nothing our auto-leveling couldn’t handle.

      KOA in Eureka, MO

Nice, clean campground, level pull-through sites - ours had a paver-patio and grill, a lot of shade throughout, dog park, and a creek to explore. This was our 2nd time here. Close to Saint Louis, Six Flags, and hiking.

      St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park

      Convenient to St. Charles

Easy off I-370, campground is new and large. It is on a lake with bike trails, kayak rental, and kids splash pad. Staff were helpful. I received about 5 pieces of paper when checking in. You need a code to get into the dog park. Shopping nearby. Used this as a base to visit historic St Charles.

LEDLENDSER MH10 and KOA Route 66 review

      Campground review:

Once googling local campsites at the last minute for a weekend getaway with both dogs, we came route 66 campground. They have a dog park, rv hookup sites, electric tent sites and primitive sites. We stayed at a primitive tent site with both dogs. Site t13, which unfortunately was one of the very few camp spots with zero trees so we're unable to use our hammock. (Most of the other sites had great trees for hammock setups). Other amenities on the campground included a heated pool, bike rentals, basketball courts, a country store for firewood, supplies, and gift shop. Needless to say this was not a "roughing" it type campground. For the dogs though, we were right across from the creek to take them down to play. Also, kids were catching crawdads! Great campsite that is pet friendly and very family friendly!

      Product review:

      Ledlenser mh10

This headlamp first of all comes with a 7 year warrantly(must register the product)! On top of that all these features: a rechargeable battery with a USB port. Rapid focus system with 2 tough button on headlamp to adjust lighting. The strap is very easy to adjust and fit to comfort, lightweight despise the battery pack attached to the headlamp. The lighting is phenomenal! You also get a green and red additional glass lense that you can screw into the front of your lense for any activity and not disturb others with a bright white light. Me, howsoever, I was able to on this camping trip, use the headlamp to continue to play a game of cornhole... and winter, might I add.. thanks to my headlamp for optimal vision;). Included are some pictures of how bright and fitting the headlamp is. I was highly impressed! Never once did it slip... which I have struggled with in many headlamps that it seems the lamp is too heavy and slowly makes its way down your forehead. The Ledlenser stays in place and is very comfortable! Also, doesn't leave that weird band line on your head... at least I didn't experience it like I have on others. Very impressed overall!

      Lots to do

There is lots to do at this park. There is a pool, bike rentals, dog park, movie night, basketball court, and more. You can bring your RV, travel trailer, tent camp, or stay in a cabin. Most of the sites are in the shade and are fairly level. The bathrooms were clean and well maintained. They have Ele/water and Ele/water/sewer sites. It is close to train tracks, but I only heard the train once at night. It’s close to Six Flags, shopping, and restaurants. They even have a cute caboose cabin you can stay in.

      St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park

      Really nice overnight stay

We spent one night here (May 11, 2022). This is a very nice easy access CG with wide, spacious, and level pull through and back-in gravel sites (25 paved). There are a lot of activities available: archery, boating, fishing, dog park, biking (wish I brought my mtn bike), walking, playground, horseshoes and volleyball. We did not have time to visit the clubhouse and did not make use of the bathrooms or showers. It is a great base camp to visit the area. The WiFi was great as was cell phone reception. We would definitely stay here again.

    Guide to O'Fallon

Camping near O'Fallon, Illinois provides access to several Mississippi River-adjacent sites with varying terrain from flat lakefront settings to wooded areas. Summer temperatures typically reach 90°F with high humidity while spring and fall camping seasons offer more moderate conditions in the 60-75°F range. Most campgrounds in this region are within 30 minutes of O'Fallon and offer year-round access except during Mississippi River flood events.

    What to do

Lake activities at Carlyle Lake: Illini Campground at Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area offers swimming, boating and shoreline fishing opportunities. "We lucked out and were able to reserve one of the last spots (site #76) which happened to have a nice view of the lake and several short trails down to the water. There was a sand/beach area and plenty of firewood around," notes one visitor who enjoyed the lake access.

Walking trails and biking: The 4-mile paved trail around the lake at St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park provides recreational opportunities beyond camping. "The lake is great to walk around, about a 3 mile walk or bike on a paved trail. You can see all kinds of wildlife in and around the lake- deer, bald eagles, pelicans, ducks, snakes," according to a camper who appreciates the wildlife viewing.

Bird watching and wildlife viewing: Horseshoe Lake State Park Campground offers excellent wildlife observation opportunities, especially during migration seasons. A visitor notes, "This is a great place when the geese are migrating thru, I really hope to be back here some day!" The lake attracts numerous waterfowl species throughout the year.

    What campers like

Value for budget campers: Horseshoe Lake State Park Campground provides affordable camping options close to the St. Louis area. "Great spot and great value," writes one reviewer, while another mentions the specific cost advantage: "Great spot in a beautiful area close to St. Louis. No power but access to drinking water and waste water dump for just 8$."

On-site food options: Cahokia RV Parque features an on-site restaurant that receives high praise from visitors. "The only real complaint was that it was a bit of a wind tunnel. I don't know if that is because of were it sits between the river/lake and a levee for the river or because it was spring time and windy anyway," shares a camper who otherwise enjoyed their stay. Another adds, "Do NOT miss the BBQ place in the parking lot... fantastic food and a 10% discount for park customers."

Security features: Many dog friendly campgrounds near O'Fallon emphasize security measures that reassure campers. At Draft Kings at Casino Queen RV Park, "Security rolled through frequently. Your gate code can be used for the pool and gym at the casino in addition to the bathroom and laundry area," notes one visitor describing the amenities and safety features.

    What you should know

Seasonality and flood concerns: Several campgrounds in the area experience seasonal closures or flooding issues. One camper at St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park points out that "One of the downsides to this location is that it is prone to flooding. It was out of commission for most of the summer of 2019 as the entire area was flooded."

Train noise: Various campsites near the St. Louis metro area experience train disturbances. At Granite City KOA, "We stayed in a tent spot... Had shade and a nice concrete pad to park on. Good clean power. Clean bathrooms and pool looked like it was taken care of... It's not in the prettiest location, very industrial and the train tracks run close. First night one came through blowing its horns around 5am."

Limited shade at newer sites: Some campgrounds lack mature trees for shade. A camper notes about St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park: "The grounds are clean and pleasant, if a bit sparse with little shade. This will change over subsequent years, however, as there are many relatively newly planted trees."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Dam West Spillway offers family-friendly features with play areas for children. "Big, spacious campsites with really pretty, big trees for lots of shade. The bathroom and shower facilities are FABULOUS, and super clean. Rangers are walking/driving around, and really friendly. Marina and beach are close," shares one family that enjoyed the amenities.

Weather preparedness: Summer temperatures frequently exceed 90°F in this region, requiring appropriate planning for comfort. According to one camper: "We stayed the weekend here and it got really busy. When we tried to book online, all were taken but saw they had a few sites that were first come. Luckily, we got one of the last two."

Reservations for peak seasons: Pet-friendly campgrounds near O'Fallon fill quickly during summer weekends and holidays. At Eldon Hazlet State Park, "The campground filled up by 11am on Friday, which was a surprise to us," warns a camper who almost missed getting a spot.

    Tips from RVers

Utility locations at sites: Draft Kings at Casino Queen RV Park has an unusual setup for hookups that requires planning. "Utilities are set up weird on all sites - Water and electric are at the very rear of the site by the sewer, so you will need a decent sized hose to reach if your water intake is in the front of your camper," notes one RV owner about this practical consideration.

Military base access for veterans: Scott AFB FamCamp offers specialized options for service members with proper credentials. "Does not have sewer hook up. One dump station that is clean, black water hose provided, but used a lot. Expect to wait your turn. A lot of spots are not level, so come prepared," shares a military camper regarding the practical amenities.

Water quality variations: When staying at pet-friendly campsites near O'Fallon, water quality can vary seasonally. As one camper at Eldon Hazlet noted: "Only complaint that I have was the potable water supply. I filled by trailer's tank at the drinking water supply when you enter the campground. It was extremely dirty with a lot of copper colored solids."
