Turner Lake South offers non-electric campsites with a more natural setting than other areas within Chain O' Lakes State Park. Sites in this section back up to wooded areas providing separation between neighbors while maintaining proximity to fishing access at the lake. Camping near Lakemoor, Illinois tends to have moderate temperatures during spring and fall, with humid summers that attract mosquitoes and ticks throughout the camping season.
What to do
Kayaking access points: The Chain O' Lakes region features multiple interconnected waterways perfect for paddlers. At Turner Lake South — Chain O' Lakes State Park, paddlers can launch directly into the quieter sections of the water system. "I love to kayak through here because I don't need to paddle through the river unless I'm feeling competitive. I enjoy this route for the wildlife and nature scenery. I've seen beavers, minks, ferrets, and sand cranes on my two trips so far," notes Cora M.
Off-trail explorations: Several trail networks connect throughout the region with side paths leading to secluded areas. "There are a series of connecting trails giving a wide variety of options. There are even horse rentals and a trail designated as horse friendly," explains Art S. from his visit to Prairie View — Chain O' Lakes State Park.
Horseback riding: Beyond hiking and water activities, equestrian options exist for riders wanting to explore on horseback. "You can ride horses or rent a tiny boat. Decent sized park for the area," shares Erin O., who camped at Turner Lake South. The horse trails are separate from hiking paths, helping maintain safety for all park users.
What campers like
Site privacy variations: The level of seclusion varies significantly between camping loops even within the same park. At Fox Den Campground — Chain O' Lakes State Park, campers appreciate the natural barriers. "Fox Den is superior to Honeysuckle Hollows because each site has an individual electric post. Sites in Honeysuckle have electric posts too far from parking pad. Fox Den also has more space between sites, more level pads and each site is tucked away with trees," observes Debra M.
Cleanliness standards: Bathhouse facilities receive regular attention though quality varies by season and visitor volume. "The shower houses are dated, yet I have seen them clean and also not clean on busy camper weekends," notes Marisa A. about Mud Lake East — Chain O' Lakes State Park, highlighting the variability campers might encounter.
Waterfront accessibility: Multiple campsites offer direct water access for fishing or launching small watercraft. "The lake was very nice. We were able to kayak but be careful getting the kayaks in. Stairs down to the pier and the bottom of the lake is very mushy. The water was very clear and you could see the fish swim by," explains Julia B. from her Turner Lake South experience.
What you should know
Wildlife encounters: Both wanted and unwanted wildlife frequent the campsites. "The raccoons at night here are no joke. The second it's dusky, they come scavenging for absolutely anything food has touched. So basically, eat dinner and do s'mores early, then everything must be packed into cars for the night and all surfaces wiped down," warns Meg from her stay at Honeysuckle Hollow — Chain O' Lakes State Park.
Park closure timing: The state park enforces strict gate closure hours that impact late arrivals. "The gates close at 10:PM and there are tire shredders, you can leave but you can't get back in... unless you want to walk 2+ miles in the dark," advises Brian O. about Chain O' Lakes State Park operations.
Insects preparation: Ticks and mosquitoes present significant challenges in warmer months. "SO many ticks. With a baby crawling that needed to be set free, we were constantly doing checks. Plan for toddlers and babies to have a contained covered screen house and have them wear hats or a wagon shade on walks so nothing lands in their hair," cautions Meg during her Honeysuckle Hollow visit.
Tips for camping with families
Child-safe spaces: Families with young children need containment strategies for little ones at campgrounds. "Sites are almost all flat thankfully, so no weird slopes to sleep on and easy for babies/toddlers to stay safe. Also seemed pretty respectful in the evenings with people toning down the noise," shares Meg about Honeysuckle Hollow.
Multiple playgrounds: The state park system offers various play structures throughout the grounds. "Multiple playgrounds, access to launch sites for kayaks, little store to buy ice cream or snacks," notes Meg about the family amenities at Chain O' Lakes.
Budget-friendly options: Camp Reinberg offers affordable camping close to Chicago with amenities that appeal to families. "These campsites are as low as $12/night!! One of my favorite spots to test new gear. Family friendly. There's some small trails around as well that are beginner," reports Addison G. about Turner Lake South's primitive camping options.
Tips from RVers
Electric hookup variations: Electrical access differs dramatically between campgrounds, affecting site selection for power-dependent campers. "These sites share an electric box. Some spaces the box is further than 30 feet from the pad. A lot of the spaces are also crowded together. Recommend sites 23 to 46 for spacing and electric distance," advises Debra M. about Honeysuckle Hollow.
Water access limitations: Most campgrounds in the area lack direct water hookups at RV sites, requiring alternative filling solutions. "There was a water spigot next to our site that we could use to fill up jugs of water. The dump station was near the entrance to the camping loop and had potable water," explains Tina about Honeysuckle Hollow's setup.
Site terrain considerations: The ground conditions at pet friendly camping near Lakemoor, Illinois vary widely and influence setup comfort. "We stayed in the Turner lake south loop, which has nice and private sites. This is in contrast to Honeysuckle hollow which is open and row after row of RV sites," compares Brian O. about the different camping experiences available at Big Foot Beach State Park Campground.
