    St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park

    RV delight

I wanted to escape the house and go camping while on the work from home order (Covid-19 happening at the time of this review), so I headed to a very local park and campground to pitch my tent. I've been to 370 Lakeside Park many times to walk around the huge lake and to hear concerts in the summer, but I had never camped there. Still haven't. I'll explain. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, they were not so keen on having tent campers. But they were very nice and gave me the general lowdown on this "in the city" campground. Since they opened the campground, most of their campers have been RV owners, and so it is really designed for the RV camper. There is a small primitive section for group tent camping, but the majority of the sites are full hookups for RVs. Some sites are pull through and some are back in. All have picnic tables and fire pits. The park has planted some trees, but they are really just saplings, so there is no shade yet. There is a nice bathhouse with free showers for the campers and pay laundry. If you are lucky, you can get a site close to the water, but it means the walking trail is right next to your unit. Trade offs, I suppose. One couple I talked to was camping long term (I think they are permanent RV'ers) and they got a free membership to the St Peter's RecPlex recreation center with their long term spot (they said something about having to book a least a month out to get this perk). One of the downsides to this location is that it is prone to flooding. It was out of commission for most of the summer of 2019 as the entire area was flooded. But the City of St Peters did a great job getting this place back to usable with new sod, a new bathhouse, and some general sprucing up. The lake is great to walk around, about a 3 mile walk or bike on a paved trail. You can see all kinds of wildlife in and around the lake- deer, bald eagles, pelicans, ducks, snakes. In the summers they have live music in the large pavilion, and you can rent kayaks and other small boats to take out on the lake as well as bikes to ride around on. The office told me that they have 24 hour on site security also. If I really wanted to tent camp, I could rent a section of the group camping area, but $30 seemed pricey for just me, and it was very soggy to boot. Or I  could rent an RV spot, but $45 was silly when I don' t need hookups.

    Country Bend Campground

    Great family friendly campground

Great place to stay and feel part of the community.  Pretty scenery to walk around.  Plenty of lakes/ponds to fish.  We couldn't boat while there due to COVID but look forward to going back and taking our kayaks.  Attentive and Friendly camp hosts. Pet friendly. Close to town if you've forgotten anything or want to have a restaurant dinner. Close to the highway for easy access.  Full hookup available. Monthly or Season also available.

    Pere Marquette State Park Campground

    Great Terrain for Illinois

This park has great hiking for Illinois. The campground has 88 sites total1-85 are either 30 amp or 50 amp electric sites. These are the class A sites $20 a night, they also have about 15 Class C sites for tents with no electric for $8 a night. The campground is doing some upgrades as of October 2017 and probably will be adding more 50 amp, water and sewer to some sites. There is also intel that says they are adding more sites plus more tent camping sites.

I camped in a motorhome and did not try to fight the crowd for the shower house. It is a busy campground, but I did visit in the summer busy season, so it may have less traffic in the fall. There are great hiking trails and the scenic drive to the park by the Mississippi and Illinois rivers is worth the trip alone.

I will return here for hiking for sure! I had some good luck fishing in the river near here too.

Draft Kings at Casino Queen RV Park

    Clean, Secure Overnight Park

Very clean and secure overnight park just outside of STL. Phenomenal views of downtown and the arch, and fairly easy access to I-55/64/70. Facilities lacked some amenities (only vending machines, convenience store has shut down), but clean, paved, level sites with full hookups throughout.

    Cahokia RV Parque

    Great Campground!

We had a great experience in the 4 nights we spent here. The grounds, pool, laundry, and bathrooms were all in excellent repair and clean. The park was quiet, but very family friendly. The spots are roomy enough, given that you’re situated less than 15 miles from downtown St. Louis. The picnic tables and fire rings are nice additions and the lots appear to be level (ours was.) We didn’t have any trouble backing our 38 ft travel trailer in either. Do NOT miss the BBQ place in the parking lot... fantastic food and a 10% discount for park customers.

    Cahokia RV Parque

Nice close park to St. Louis

Pet-friendly, full hookups, space for our larger rig and parking around for extra vehicle. Laundry and propane on site. Spaces were a little close together, but minutes from downtown St. Louis, and staff was friendly and accommodating. Also, fantastic restaurant right on site -- Sawmill BBQ!

    Country Bend Campground

    GO ELSEWHERE

Our motorhome is a big rig a 42 foot diesel pusher.. They squeezed site was 7 ft wide with little gravel mostly wet grass and mud.Our 40000 lb RV was 8 1/2"ft wide. We were put in a spot by Country Bend Campground not large enough for our vehicle. Not much gravel all mud. Due to a huge tree no satellite service yet the owners stated was good for our 42 ft diesel pusher motorhome and no obstacles. We were sandwiched between two living full time people right next to us. We waited 3 hours to come in since they charge$5 an hour extra for early arrival. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!$$$$ is their goal. They want you to rent their golf carts because everything is so spread out. We have been full timing for two years. This is the worst experience we ever had. No water hookup. We called Kate Tuxhorn the owner and she said sorry i forgot to tell you that you have to tap in your neighbors water. Her husband Jeff Tuxhorn has many bad reviews too.Leaving we hit that huge tree that we had no way to turn. Thousands of$ damage.

    Cahokia RV Parque

Very nice park near downtown St. Louis

Cahokia RV Parque is a nice RV park only 15 minutes from downtown St. Louis. We stayed two nights and really enjoyed the St. Louis area. I compared the park to two others near St. Louis on the Illinois side and found this one to be the most pleasant. Most of the sites are sunny, but some have shade. The park streets are asphalt, but the sites are gravel. The park is quiet. Gave it 4 stars for cleanliness due to the gravel sites. Otherwise, the park was clean.

Stayed in campsite#34 which has plenty of shade. It was a gravel back-in site with enough parking for my TT and truck with plenty of grass on either side. The site included: picnic table on a concrete patio, fire ring, and small trees. Utilities were located closer to the front of the site: 20A/30A/50A electric water, sewer. Site was pretty level. Awning faced east so we didnt get the evening sun shining underneath, but a tree prevented me from opening the awning. It didnt matter because there was plenty of shade in the evening, but not much in the middle of the day. Nearest neighbor was close.

AT&T had 2 bars of 5G and Verizon 3 bars of LTE service. AT&T Speedtest 49.7 Mbps down, 3.35 Mbps up. Could not access the WiFi even though the password was on the info sheet.

Would stay here again.  We camped at Cahokia RV Parque in a Travel Trailer.

Guide to Highland

RV sites near Highland, Illinois serve as convenient bases for travelers exploring the greater St. Louis area. Located in southwestern Illinois approximately 35 miles from downtown St. Louis, the region features gently rolling terrain with elevations ranging from 500-600 feet. The area experiences distinct seasonal changes with hot summers where temperatures regularly exceed 90°F and mild winters with occasional snow.

What to Do

Historic exploration in St. Charles: From Sundermeier RV Park, access the Katy Trail for biking. "You are literally be parked right at the Katy Trail. Through the gate at the rear of the campground, and you can bike for miles. Easy ride in to St. Charles a wonderful historic river town on the Missouri River," notes one visitor.

Gateway Arch National Park visits: Many campgrounds offer easy access to downtown St. Louis attractions. "Stayed two nights passing through to visit Gateway Arch National Park. Casino has a metro stop that takes you into St Louis over the river," reports a traveler at Draft Kings at Casino Queen RV Park.

Fishing opportunities: Several campgrounds maintain small fishing ponds on their properties. At Cahokia RV Parque, one camper mentioned a "gazebo to fish off of" near the primitive camping area by the pond, providing a relaxing activity option without leaving the campground.

What Campers Like

Urban convenience with security: Safety measures are important to campers in the metro area. "Security is proactive in patrols and are friendly and helpful. No frills but a great view of the arch. Centrally located and across the bridge from downtown," writes one Draft Kings at Casino Queen RV Park visitor.

On-site dining options: Several campers appreciate not having to cook after a long travel day. "Our favorite part of this park is the onsite Sawmill BBQ restaurant. While we prepare most of our meals, we were so tired; we decided to give the joint a try and, wow, are we glad we did! Delicious food for a reasonable price!" commented a visitor at Cahokia RV Parque.

Clean facilities: Well-maintained amenities receive consistent praise. At Archway RV Park, "Clean, reasonable and the staff/owners were great!!! Would stay again! Easy on and off to 64 and 57!!!" according to one reviewer who appreciated the overall cleanliness and convenient location.

What You Should Know

Train and airport noise: Many campgrounds in the area experience transportation-related noise due to their urban locations. "On Lambert international airports flight path, next to a major train trestle, right next to Highway 370. Very industrial around the park," notes one Covered Bridge RV Park visitor, highlighting common noise factors.

Urban setting considerations: The metropolitan location means different camping conditions than rural parks. "This is not a rural campground. It's a centrally located campground in the Metro St. Louis area. It's close to interstates and it's a short drive across the river to Missouri attractions," explains a camper at Cahokia RV Parque.

Water hookup positioning: Setup logistics can vary between parks. At Draft Kings at Casino Queen RV Park, "Water and electric are at the very rear of the site by the sewer, so you will need a decent sized hose to reach if your water intake is in the front of your camper," advises one visitor who discovered this utility arrangement.

Tips for Camping with Families

Playground access: Several campgrounds offer play areas for children. According to a Cahokia RV Parque visitor, "There is a playground, pool and pond area to walk around. We were pleased with the cleanliness of the bathrooms and showers and had no major complaints."

Pet-friendly considerations: Many families travel with pets and appreciate designated areas. "We really enjoyed Kamper Companion! We stay there every time we pass through Litchfield. Quiet, family friendly, and great for our dogs. We love the dog yard!" shares one repeat visitor.

Recreation opportunities: Look for campgrounds with built-in activities. "The outside area is made for families to play and relax and enjoy time together, and the indoor spaces are cozy and designed for the comfort of the guests," writes a camper about the communal spaces at Archway RV Park.

Tips from RVers

Site layout awareness: At Kamper Kompanion RV Park, "Easy pull thru site with 40' and toad. Basically a big open flat field with sites and building spread throughout. Cute little fenced in pet area with benches for the pups to stretch," according to one RVer who appreciated the spacious layout.

Check-in processes vary: Some parks have automated systems while others offer personal service. "Just off the highway, but minimal noise. Clean. Well maintained. Pleasant staff. We had a long pull through, but there are a limited number of those," notes a visitor at Kamper Kompanion.

Electrical safety: When staying at urban RV parks, verify electrical connections. "DO NOT use the 30A receptacles here unless you have a surge protector with an Electrical Management System (EMS) that explicitly confirms correct wiring before connecting your RV," warns one experienced camper who identified potential safety issues.
