Best Cabin Camping near Highland, IL

Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area and Okaw Valley Kampground provide cabin accommodations within 30 minutes of Highland, Illinois. Cabins at Eldon Hazlet feature basic furnishings with electricity and heating options for year-round comfort. Most units include beds, tables, and chairs with varying sleeping capacities. According to one visitor, "This State Park offers playground areas and more. Cabins, campsites with power or no power the choice is yours." Bathroom facilities are typically centralized in shower houses rather than inside individual cabins, though some premium units may include private restrooms.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Cahokia RV Parque offers more developed cabin options with proximity to St. Louis attractions, while Country Bend Campground provides family-friendly cabin rentals in a more rural setting. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially during summer months when lakeside cabins fill quickly. Most properties allow pets in designated cabins for an additional fee. A visitor at Washington County Lake noted that their cabins are "overpriced due to no running water or nearby toilet but more private and great lake views."

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities vary significantly between properties—some offer only outdoor fire rings with cooking grates while others provide refrigerators and microwaves. Okaw Valley Kampground maintains a camp store where basic provisions can be purchased. For more substantial grocery needs, Carlyle (near Eldon Hazlet) has a Walmart and several dining options. As one camper mentioned, "The nearby town of Carlyle has a Walmart and several fast food eateries, but only one independent restaurant, Mexican, which came highly recommended."

    Nice clean and convenient

Family owned with a nice little fishing area (no license required catch and release) paddle boats and camp store. A nice pool with a big covered pavilion, clean restrooms and showers with hot water. We had a level pull thru gravel site with a picnic table and small fire ring and didn’t have to unhook for our overnight. Walking/hiking wooded trails 2 cabins available- several seasonal folks. We were there on a Sunday evening and didn’t really see anyone. Little bit of road noise but so convenient! Thanks Barb!

There is always something to do here and the owners strive to make it a family place by providing many activities on the weekends. The owners have done an amazing job on this campground and have made it one of the best campgrounds around to create that lasting experience with our children before they grow up!!!

    Shady Rest campground

Really great campground. Good mix of tents and RVs. Bath house was very well kept and clean. Showers ran cold at first but after a few mins it gets warmer! There were plenty of pit toliets through out the campground and trash cans. My tent site was clean, good flat spot for tent, picnic table and fire pit with attached grill.

The Concession building in the park is closing. No boat rentals, selling everything he has on the shelf.

Caught a few bass and and good amount of hiking. Large trail around the whole lake, smaller trails lead to sites around the different campgrounds.

    Beaver Dam State Park Campground

    Nice campsites

All sites are shaded and mostly level with pull-thru or back-in parking. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring with a grate over it. Each site has electric, however the water spigots are scattered about. The restroom and shower house is very clean.

There is a nice walking trail path that goes around the exterior of the lake. The lake has boat access and some good fishing spots. There is also a restaurant and store on the lake. The breakfast at the restaurant is great! Mosquitoes are bad, remember to bring repellent.

    Cahokia RV Parque

Nice close park to St. Louis

Pet-friendly, full hookups, space for our larger rig and parking around for extra vehicle. Laundry and propane on site. Spaces were a little close together, but minutes from downtown St. Louis, and staff was friendly and accommodating. Also, fantastic restaurant right on site -- Sawmill BBQ!

    Cahokia RV Parque

    Cahokia RV Parque, IL

We chose Cahokia RV Park because of its close proximity to St. Louis Missouri. We stayed in a gravel site with a concrete pad, fire pit, picnic table and full-hook ups. The spaces are tighter, but that was expected being closer to a city. There is a playground, pool and pond area to walk around. We were pleased with the cleanliness of the bathrooms and showers and had no major complaints. The price reflected what we got out of our stay.

Close to STL, beautiful bathrooms, restaurant on site, after hours check in

I specifically would like to point out things that I look for when booking because I’m usually already on the road when trying to find a place to stay. There was after hours check in! But also a so friendly staff in the office. Beautiful coded bathrooms with showers. They were heated and warm and very well marked.
We did get a 30amp spot, because we have a van with solar panels and didn’t need to hook up. From doing this we were placed under street lights so they were always on and bright directly on our van. The next night they let us move to a 50 amp. The 50 amp spaces were the only ones with firepits. Rvs are close to one another but I was completely okay with that. There was road noise, quite a bit. But large trash bins and a great bbq restaurant on the grounds! I was planning on grabbing a gallon of milk when we got there...there really is nothing around the rv park! Maybe a couple gas stations at best, but if you need groceries or anything, stop and get them before you get close. Stop in the town before.

Oh and an awesome playground for the kids!!

Guide to Highland

Cabins near Highland, Illinois range from rustic to comfort-oriented accommodations within a 30-minute drive. The region sits along the Kaskaskia River basin at approximately 500 feet elevation with seasonal temperatures that fluctuate significantly. Winter cabin rentals require advance planning as many facilities reduce operations from November through March.

What to do

Fishing access: year-round options: At Illini Campground — Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area, anglers can fish directly from the shoreline. "We lucked out and were able to reserve one of the last spots (site #76) which happened to have a nice view of the lake and several short trails down to the water. There was a sand/beach area and plenty of firewood around," notes one visitor.

Hiking trails: lake views: The hiking trails around Beaver Dam State Park Campground offer moderate terrain for casual walks. "The trail goes all the way around the lake with several fishing spots. The overlook to the marsh is pretty cool," reports a camper who explored the area. The trails need better markings but provide scenic lake views.

Swimming options: pools and beaches: Seasonal swimming facilities vary between cabin locations. "There is a swimming pool and campground store. The pool was closed when we were there but looked nice," mentions an Eldon Hazlet visitor. Many cabin rental properties close pools from September through May, so verify availability when booking.

What campers like

Proximity to St. Louis attractions: Cahokia RV Parque offers cabin accommodations with easy access to metropolitan attractions. "Just minutes across the river from St. Louis. They have a shuttle to the various tourist attractions, just ask the staff at the office for details," reports a visitor. Their cabin options provide urban convenience while maintaining camping comforts.

Clean facilities: air conditioned bathhouses: The shower facilities at Dam West Campground receive consistent praise. "Showers are great separate toilets/shower rooms," notes a recent visitor. Another camper states, "CLEAN (and air conditioned) bath houses. The sites are beautiful and well maintained!" This makes the cabin experience more comfortable during summer heat.

Budget-friendly pricing: Value-oriented cabins provide affordable accommodations. A visitor to Beaver Dam State Park noted, "This is a small quaint campground that allows you to get a feel for the state park. There are plenty of walking trails, rec areas and fishing available around the park which makes it for the perfect weekend getaway for the family."

What you should know

Reservation timing: book early: Securing cabin rentals requires advance planning. At Dam West Campground, "We arrived at this campground at 11am on a Friday only to find that that the first-come, first-serve sites were already full. From driving around it looks like a very nice campground. After talking to the campground host, it sounds like they go fast."

Water quality concerns: Water systems at some properties may have seasonal issues. At Eldon Hazlet, one camper reported, "Only complaint that I have was the potable water supply. I filled by trailer's tank at the drinking water supply when you enter the campground. It was extremely dirty with a lot of copper colored solids."

Offseason limitations: Several cabin properties reduce services during winter months. A Dam West visitor notes, "Very nice kept up campground. Reservable sites are hard to book. Only negatives is that this campground is not open year-round." Call ahead to confirm winter availability.

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: weekend events: Country Bend Campground offers extensive family-oriented recreation. "Huge campground with a lot of different areas. Be prepared for a lot of walking unless you rent or bring your own golf cart. Holiday weekends have so many planned activities, some for all ages," shares a visitor. Their cabin rentals provide convenient access to these facilities.

Grocery options: plan ahead: Supply runs require driving to nearby towns. "Walmart is just 5-10min away if needed as well as restaurants, gas station, and other amenities in Carlyle nearby," mentions an Eldon Hazlet camper. Most cabin areas lack substantial on-site stores.

Playground access: multiple locations: Family-friendly cabin areas typically include play areas. At Eldon Hazlet, "There are three playground areas, a basketball court, sand volleyball and a pool during summer months. Lots of families with kids, bike rides and plenty of other lake and outdoor activities in the area," notes a visitor.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: At Rustic Acres Jellystone, site choices matter significantly. "The campsites are small and a bit pricey, but it is a great family friendly place. Good pizza and amazing ice cream at the store!" The same applies when selecting cabin locations within campgrounds.

Onsite food options: Some cabin areas feature dining facilities. At Cahokia RV Parque, a visitor recommends, "Do NOT miss the BBQ place in the parking lot... fantastic food and a 10% discount for park customers." This saves cooking time during short stays.

Bathroom proximity planning: When selecting cabin locations, bathroom proximity matters. One Eldon Hazlet visitor cautioned, "Unless you have a restroom in your rig, be prepared to walk up to the showerhouse. The pit toilets that were spread across the campground were in horrendous condition and had wasps, spiders, and other critters hanging out."
