Glen Carbon, Illinois sits at the crossroads of urban convenience and outdoor recreation, with several established campgrounds within a 30-minute drive. Horseshoe Lake State Park Campground, located 15 miles southwest in Granite City, provides tent and RV sites with electric hookups in a natural setting from May through September. The St. Louis NE-Granite City KOA offers more developed camping with full hookups for RVs, plus cabin options for those seeking amenities like showers and a camp store. Military personnel can access Scott AFB FamCamp in Belleville, which operates year-round with laundry facilities and various hookup options. Most campgrounds in the area cater primarily to RV travelers, though tent camping is available at select locations.

Reservations are essential at most campgrounds in the region, particularly during summer weekends when St. Louis residents seek nearby getaways. Many sites require advance booking through Recreation.gov or campground-specific reservation systems. As one camper noted, "Most sites have plenty of shade and room between, so you're not right on top of your neighbors." Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity, while spring brings potential flooding concerns to low-lying areas. Insect activity peaks from May through September, with mosquitoes being particularly prevalent near water features. Urban-adjacent campgrounds like Cahokia RV Parque and Draft Kings at Casino Queen RV Park experience ambient noise from nearby highways, railroads, and Lambert International Airport flight paths.

Waterfront camping receives consistently positive reviews from visitors to the region. Carlyle Lake, Illinois' largest lake, features multiple campgrounds with lakeside sites that fill quickly during peak season. According to one camper, "Many sites are right next to the lake with impeccably clean bathrooms and showerhouses." Urban campgrounds provide convenient access to St. Louis attractions, with one reviewer noting, "It's centrally located in the Metro St. Louis area, close to interstates and a short drive across the river to Missouri attractions." Glen Carbon campers can choose from a variety of camping options within a short driving distance, ranging from lakeside sites to convenient urban camping locations. Noise levels vary significantly between rural and urban sites, with several reviewers mentioning airport and highway noise at locations closer to the city. Bike trail access is highlighted at several campgrounds, particularly those connecting to the Katy Trail system, offering recreation opportunities beyond the campsite.

      St Louis Mulberry RV Gardens

      Could be worse

Pulled in after the office had closed. They knew we would show up late. Around 1930. Still light outside. Opened the after hours check in and there was nothing for us. Or a map. Luckily there was a number to call. We called. Lady said she was on break and would call us back. Never did. After digging through emails, we finally found what site they had assigned to us. Very small print. Due to this app we were able to use the map posted. However there was no p10 site. Just up to p09. Called the lady back. Said there’s a p10 but that she would move us to p9 in the system. Just decide to stay because we’ve been driving all day. Beautiful grounds/location. Enjoyed a nice sunset. It’s sad it’s “kept up” by these people who can’t help someone because they are on break. Appears a lot of the campers live here. Which to me doesn’t matter. But it does when you can’t help someone for 5 min. Campers are nice. Bath house is a bit dirty. But usable. Skipping a shower tonight but the toilets and sink work.

      Cherokee Lakes Campground

      Convenient

Good location close to O'Fallon and Hwy 70. Kind of close to the busy main road running through town. Some long term rigs are there, but look kept up.

      Beyond the Trail RV Park

Nice campground on Katy Trail bike path

This camp grown is right on the Kathy trail which is over two hundred and twenty miles of a rail to the trail state park. It is also nestled in a small area with lots of wineries and microbreweries , making it a very nice place to stay for a while. Located only about twenty minutes from a major community with all the amenities you need.

      Pere Marquette State Park Campground

      Very Scenic Park

The campground is nicely shaded with large trees but not to the point that there isn't grass. Think of camping in a large manicured city park without the city. The town of Grafton is a bonus. Many restaurants and pubs.

      Dr. Edmond Babler State Park

Nice state park camping close to St. Louis

Staff is very friendly and great at their jobs. Bathroom was clean and nice. Gets a little crowded but it's still fairly small so not too crowded. Can't speak much for RV camping, but tent/car camping was better than some other state park sites.

      Dr. Edmond Babler State Park

      Great location

We have stayed at this campground so many times and love it. Cell service is excellent enabling me to work from my rv. It is close to anything you would need, but secluded enough and surrounded by huge trees and hiking trails. I have also rented a pavillion for a party.

      Cozy Campsite

Great Location for Horses or Pets that need space

We spent a week at this location. It has a great level slab to park your camper. They also have a wonderful fenced in area for horses as well as a fenced in area where you park your camper. Let your dogs run free!
Sarah and Justin were very attentive hosts. They live on the property but are not so close that you know they are there. They also raise chickens and sell their fresh eggs! If you need a secure place for your dogs or horses, this spot is perfect!

    Guide to Glen Carbon

The Glen Carbon camping area sits within the American Bottom floodplain along the Mississippi River, with elevations rarely exceeding 600 feet above sea level. Summer humidity levels frequently reach 80-90%, creating muggy conditions from June through September. Most camping options cluster along the Illinois-Missouri border within a 35-mile radius, providing access to both states' attractions.

    What to do

Bike the Katy Trail access: At Sundermeier RV Park in St. Charles, campers can access the Katy Trail directly from the campground. "Through the gate at the rear of the campground, and you can bike for miles. Easy ride in to St. Charles a wonderful historic river town on the Missouri River," notes one reviewer. The trail offers a 1.5-2 mile route to downtown St. Charles.

Fishing at nearby lakes: Horseshoe Lake State Park Campground provides fishing access with minimal facilities but natural surroundings. "The campground is staffed by rangers in the day, and at night they sometimes take a security swing through the campground. Nice lake for fishing and boating," reports one camper. The lake allows boating but prohibits swimming.

Visit Gateway Arch National Park: Draft Kings at Casino Queen RV Park offers direct views of the St. Louis skyline and Gateway Arch. According to one visitor, "Easy access to I-55/64/70. Phenomenal views of downtown and the arch." The park provides an urban camping base for visiting St. Louis attractions, with sites noting you can "see the arch" from certain spots.

    What campers like

Budget-friendly options: Horseshoe Lake State Park Campground receives praise for its affordability. One reviewer notes, "Great spot in a beautiful area close to St. Louis. No power but access to drinking water and waste water dump for just 8$." Another mentions it's "a great 5 star simply because of the overnight price and privacy."

Urban convenience with security: Many campgrounds near Glen Carbon feature secured access. As one camper at Casino Queen RV Park observed, "Security rolled through frequently. Your gate code can be used for the pool and gym at the casino in addition to the bathroom and laundry area." Gated entry provides peace of mind despite some campgrounds' industrial surroundings.

On-site food options: Cahokia RV Parque stands out for its on-site BBQ restaurant. "Do NOT miss the BBQ place in the parking lot... fantastic food and a 10% discount for park customers," shares one camper. Another adds, "Our favorite part of this park is the onsite Sawmill BBQ restaurant. While we prepare most of our meals, we were so tired; we decided to give the joint a try and, wow, are we glad we did!"

    What you should know

Transportation noise: Most campgrounds near Glen Carbon experience various noise sources. At St. Louis NE-Granite City KOA, "trains pass 2 blocks away several times nightly, but after the first night you won't notice. During modified car racing season, Friday nights are roaring loud from the racetrack nearby." Other parks mention airport flight paths and highway noise.

Limited grocery access: Several campgrounds sit in industrial areas with minimal shopping options. One camper at Cahokia RV Parque warns, "I was planning on grabbing a gallon of milk when we got there...there really is nothing around the rv park! Maybe a couple gas stations at best, but if you need groceries or anything, stop and get them before you get close."

Seasonal considerations: When searching for the best places to camp near Glen Carbon, Illinois, note that several campgrounds operate seasonally. Horseshoe Lake State Park typically operates May through September, while the St. Louis NE-Granite City KOA runs from March 25 to November 1, limiting winter camping options in the immediate area.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Families appreciate the recreation options at Cahokia RV Parque. "There is a playground, pool and pond area to walk around," notes one reviewer. Another mentions, "My kids loved the jumping pillow at the park. Minimal playground but they still enjoyed it."

Entertainment proximity: For families wanting activities beyond the campground, Casino Queen RV Park offers location advantages. "Great place to just drop in for a short 1 night stay. Well maintained facility," shares one camper. Another notes its convenient location for accessing St. Louis attractions.

Safety considerations: Many campgrounds prioritize security features. One Horseshoe Lake camper noted, "Rangers were helpful and friendly. Came back a second time. Great for first time campers good rates and amenities." Campgrounds with visible security patrols provide peace of mind for families with children.

    Tips from RVers

Site conditions: MGM Campground receives positive reviews for its spaciousness. One long-term camper notes, "We pay $550 a month including utilities. There are a lot of long term setups. Kind owner. Nice little lake. Surrounded by nature, lots of grass and trees, great for dog owners. Spacious spots."

Hookup locations: RV campers should check utility placement before arrival. One Casino Queen RV Park visitor cautions, "Utilities are set up weird on all sites - Water and electric are at the very rear of the site by the sewer, so you will need a decent sized hose to reach if your water intake is in the front of your camper."

Leveling requirements: Site levelness varies across campgrounds. At Sundermeier RV Park, "Nice level concrete pads with FHU will definitely stay here again," while at Scott AFB FamCamp, "A lot of spots are not level, so come prepared."
