Best RV Parks & Resorts near Evanston, IL

Several RV parks surrounding Evanston provide options for motorhome travelers. Camp Reinberg in Palatine features five RV sites including two with paved concrete pads and three with gravel pads, all equipped with electric hookups. "The sites are concrete, flat, and easy to get into," noted one camper about Camp Reinberg's RV parking. NAVSTA Great Lakes RV Campground offers lakefront sites with electric hookups but limited 50-amp service and no sewer connections at individual sites. Camp Bullfrog Lake provides electric sites suitable for RVs with a scenic lakeside setting, though water connections must be accessed from central water stations rather than at individual sites. Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort in Joliet accommodates big rigs with 50-amp electric and water hookups.

Full-service dump stations are not available at all locations, requiring planning for longer stays. Camp Reinberg requires staff assistance for water fills, as there are no dedicated water hookups at the RV sites. Cell service varies between locations, with T-Mobile coverage reported as limited at some parks. Many campgrounds implement security measures including gated access during evening hours. According to one review, "The entrance was hard to find" at Camp Sullivan, which offers electric-only sites without water or dump facilities. Reservations are essential for most parks, particularly during summer and fall weekends when Chicago-area residents seek outdoor getaways. Most facilities allow pets but maintain specific restrictions, and campground stores with basic supplies exist at several locations.

    Indiana Dunes State Park Campground

    Clean & Spacious

We pulled in around 4:30 in the evening. The sight was spacious with plenty of room in between sites. Since the weather was cooler , it was pretty sparse with other campers. We stayed 2 nights over the weekend. You are within walking distance to the beach within the park. The buildings have great architecture. The sight had 50 amp electric hook ups but no water or sewer connections, and we knew that going in. We had a back in sight #69. There was plenty of space on all sides. We have a 37’ motorhome and pulled a Jeep behind it. There was plenty of room to maneuver around. The sight also had a wood picnic table and fire ring for a wood fire pit. We will definitely be back! I wish I had taken more photos from the beach and beach pavilion.

    Indiana Dunes State Park Campground

Nice layout and a ton of nature activities

The state park is located within the boundaries of the Indiana Dunes National Park (formerly National Lakeshore), so don't get confused by this. There also is a national park campground, but it's closed in the winter.)

This state park has a nice layout because the sites seem to be staggered so that they don't back up to each other. Also, there is a good buffer space behind the sites and decent space between each site.

All sites have 20- 30- and 50-amp service available, plus almost all are a combination of a concrete pad and asphalt apron. Note that just because they're paved doesn't mean all of them are level. Each site has a fire pit and it appeared they all have grill grates on them.

One nice touch is that some sites have wider asphalt aprons so if you have a longer rig, you can put your towing vehicle or your towed vehicle off to the side once your rig is in place. Also, the ADA sites are nicely laid out with larger concrete pads so that even the fire pits are in the concrete section for ease of access.

Note that after Nov. 1, the water is shut off and bathrooms are shut down until spring, although there are vault toilets available.

You will hear a pretty regular stream of train whistles at this campground, but they aren't so loud as to be disruptive.

You can hike to the 1929 Dunes Pavilion and a large beach on Lake Michigan. The best hiking activity, however, and also easily accessible by walking from the campground, is the series of dune trails. The Nature Center, which sits between the campground and the trails, has some good visitor's information about the dunes, the flora and fauna, and the history of the area.

Once you finish seeing what you want in the state park, there's still the entire national park to see. Plus, there's a multi-use trail that runs for 9 miles along the state park and into the national park.

Cell service for Verizon was two bars but speeds seem to be good. Less signal and speed for Google Fi, but not terrible.

    Happy Acres Kampground

    Great for families

Staff was polite and helpful. They escort you to your spot. They hand out activity sheets for the weekend. Petting zoo, camp store, pool, lake/pond for swimming and fishing. Cell signal for ATT just one bar. No internet. Lots of full time residents. Lots of activities for kids. Pet friendly. They charge extra if you have visitors.

Enchanted Shores RV Park & Campground

    Never Again!

We booked here sight unseen due to temporary employment in the area.

    What a terrible mistake.

The best thing was, that there is "full hook up" here???

This place is old and run-down to say the least, there's not a flat spot on any of the roads. The sites are dirt with something green in between. The stinkest water we've ever smelled, horrible!!! Our sewer connection was nearly buried. There is a laundry area, I don't know what it's like, I'd never wash our close in that nasty water, we found a Laundromat. The lots are verious sizes of tiny. Most sites you're back to back to your neighbor. Your door faces your other neighbor's door, it's like you shared a site. We asked for a picnic table and got one, but when we left for a week, when we returned it was gone! Despite the high rent, there's no internet or cable TV, basically no emenities. We were told there was planned activities, but we weren't there long enough to find out. There's a area for long-term, yearly sites. Several of the trailers in that area were old with beat up decks, some surrounded by junk.

We installed interior security cameras to keep an eye on our rig. Then stayed in a hotel until we changed our job location.

We can't image a worse location. I should be condemned.

We feel bad for those who are on the road and fall into this trap for a place to stay on the way, or close to Chicago.

    Indiana Dunes State Park Campground

    Close by taste of nature

This is actually our second visit here. It’s only 20 minutes from our home, so we expect to come back many times. It’s a unique location about .5 miles from the actual beach and there’s a path/boardwalk that takes you right there. This is one of the few state parks that has a year-round heated bathroom with shower, so even with our popup camper we were able to take advantage of the decent weather for our first trip of the year. Sites are decent sized and have asphalt driveways with concrete pads. Sites are electric only, but there’s several water fills, even in winter. Very popular campground so you do have to book well in advance during regular season. Be aware that because it shares an entrance to the state park beach, entering on a summer Saturday or summer Sunday can take upwards of 45 minutes or more.

    Lehmans Lakeside RV Resort

    Felt like a trailer park

A pull through style RV park. Great if you have a toy hauler style camper, but if you're used to boondocking/ dispersed camping. Very very few spots with shade and trees. Felt like a trailer park not camping.

    NAVSTA Great Lakes RV Campground

    Short stop

It was a small RV park had a concert pad but not big enough for a 43 ft motor home. The site was 60 ft, but the whole site was not concrete. We were there for one night, it rained and the whole site had puddles around it. I do understand that it is a RV site but we stayed at others that were not concrete pad and did not flood this much. It was extremely muddy. Water was very. None of the sites had sewage, the dump station was about a mile down the road. They have a few 50 amp lots. We did not have one. The site had I would call it an out house. I did not see a bath house with showers. The out house only had a toilet, no sink for hand washing. The location was right on the water so that was nice. Other than that I was not impressed.

Sunset Campground — Richard Bong State Recreation Area

    Best site at the campground

Pros: great hiking trails, nice lake to kayak on, family friendly beach and picnic areas

Cons: Not great fishing, no dog friendly swim area, the beach/fishing pier/boat launch are all pretty far from the campsites. There is a hiking trail down to it, but when bringing a bunch of beach gear/kid toys it’s much easier to throw it all in the car and drive down there.

We have been to Bong a few times and this site was by far the best we’ve stayed at. Evenly sunny/shaded. Not overly buggy. Couldn’t see the people in the sites next to us. Had a flat, grassy area for the tent. It also had a couple mature trees to attach the dog’s zip line to.

Guide to Evanston

RV camping near Evanston, Illinois offers access to natural areas within an hour's drive of Chicago's northern suburbs. The region features a mix of forest preserves with glacial topography, small lakes, and riverfront camping options. Summer temperatures average 75-85°F, while spring and fall camping requires preparation for temperature fluctuations between 45-65°F.

What to do

Hiking trails access: Camp Reinberg connects directly to the Deer Grove Forest Preserve trail system with varied terrain. "There are plenty of paved trails as well as dirt, lots of fun little off-shoots into the woods, creeks run throughout, and there's even a little up-and-down thanks to ice age glaciers," notes one visitor.

Water recreation: Camp Bullfrog Lake offers kayak rentals at $15/hour including life vests. "The kayaks are $15 and hour and include life vests. The lake is pretty small but it was fun to putter around," a camper explains.

Mountain biking: The Palos trail system near Camp Bullfrog Lake provides extensive single-track options. A camper shares, "If you're a trail rider, you must stay here. The lack of shade won't matter because you'll be riding all day. There are miles and miles of trails."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Camp Reinberg receives high marks for maintenance. "Restrooms (seriously the cleanest I've ever seen, even the ceilings were cleaned!) and cabins, along with tent sites and 5 RV sites," one camper reports. Another adds, "The shower facilities were clean and the staff very friendly."

Wildlife viewing: At Grass Lake Marina and RV Park, nature observation opportunities abound. A camper notes, "The bald eagles nests are also amazing. We had water and 50amp, with a black water dump once or twice a week at your RV's site."

Convenience to Chicago: Locations provide urban access while offering outdoor experiences. A camper at Camp Reinberg says, "The campground is centrally located to the major roads (Quentin/NW Hwy) and about 10 minutes from the Palatine Metra train station."

What you should know

Site characteristics: Camp Bullfrog Lake has limited shade. "There is NO shade during the day. None at all due to the trees within the campground being small," warns a visitor. Another adds, "Sites are pretty close to each other, but neighbors were quiet."

Seasonal considerations: Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort has seasonal water availability restrictions. "No water before 4/15," reports one camper, indicating spring visitors should check utilities.

Noise factors: Some locations experience noise from nearby transportation infrastructure. At Hollywood Casino, a camper notes, "Rail yard behind the row of trees. I believe they were humbling train all night long."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Fox Bluff CottageS & RV offers multiple recreation options. "The new pool, the game room, the playground, the beautiful new bath house and the grounds are just wonderful," states a regular visitor.

Pet-friendly areas: Many campgrounds accommodate four-legged family members with designated spaces. At Grass Lake Marina, a camper shares, "This is a great place to let the pups run, play, swim, and walk. The huge, mowed, grassy field in front of our coach for the pups to play was great."

Security features: Gated access provides safety at several locations. A Camp Reinberg visitor notes, "I felt secure staying here as well as leaving my RV in this campground. There is a gate that is closed at 10pm every night and opened again in the morning."

Tips from RVers

Hookup limitations: Lehmans Lakeside RV Resort has full hookups but inconsistent water quality. A seasonal camper warns, "The park water is high in Iron. The pot roads need service as they do have a lot of pot holes."

Big rig considerations: Some parks offer more spacious sites than others. "The pull throughs were really long," notes a Lehmans Lakeside visitor, while another at Camp Reinberg shares that "RV spots are concrete, flat, and easy to get into."

Dump station access: Many campgrounds have limited sewer options. "Partial hookups (sewer just outside of park behind hotel). $46/night (+fees) for a pull-through spot," explains a visitor to Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort, highlighting the need to plan accordingly.
