Best Dog-Friendly Camping in Idaho

Camp Coeur D Alene accommodates pets in a variety of settings including tent sites, RV spots, cabins, and glamping accommodations. Similarly, Yellowstone Park/West Gate KOA Holiday welcomes pets at their tent campsites, RV sites, and cabin rentals. Most Idaho state parks maintain standard pet policies requiring dogs to be leashed at all times, typically limited to a 6-foot leash. Peninsula Campground at Ponderosa State Park provides water hookups and picnic tables at pet-friendly sites, while Three Island Crossing State Park Campground offers year-round accessibility for campers with pets. Campgrounds near Targhee Creek provide spacious sites where dogs can enjoy proximity to water, though the creek may be too high or cold for swimming during certain seasons.

Targhee Creek dispersed camping area offers secluded spots with good cell service, making it an excellent free camping option near Yellowstone's West Entrance. The unpaved access roads at Lake Creek Road dispersed camping can be managed by most vehicles including Class C RVs towing passenger cars. Proper pet management is essential in these areas as local wildlife includes deer and raccoons, particularly in refuges like Lake Walcott State Park. Dogs must be kept under control around wilderness areas and other campers, as some visitors report issues with off-leash dogs wandering through campsites. Many dispersed camping locations like Cauldron Linn BLM offer free camping with pet-friendly policies, though they typically lack amenities like running water or waste stations, so campers should pack accordingly for their dogs.

    Swan Falls - Idaho Power

    Not terrible

A little bit misleading in the description. There are some established camp spots and then there is some “dispersed” camping. In reality the dispersed camping is more like established camping on BLM land.
It can be a little bit confusing when you arrive but you take a right turn away from the welcome sign. You’ll travel by a boat launch on your left and some construction type equipment on your right as you travel down a dirt road. The mile or so is the established camping in Idaho Power property. It’ll be on your left as your drive. About 2ish miles in you’ll see a beat up sign marking the beginning of BLM land. After that there are turnouts for the “dispersed” camping. There are permanent fire pits and even some pit toilets so not exactly dispersed in the overland sense, but more like camping in the 80’s if you are old enough to remember that.
You won’t need a 4WD rig. A front wheel drive sedan can do this drive, but the road is bumpy. It was dry when I went to maybe if it’s muddy it would be more treacherous.
All in not a terrible camping spot. You’re right on the river and the bugs are too.
Remember, kids, only trash leaves trash and don’t be the weirdos “out in nature” with your Bluetooth speaker blaring music.

    Craters of the Moon-Arco KOA

    Fun holiday camping

Great little campground with full hook ups, 30 or 50 Amp. Spaces for tent camping up to Class A motor homes. Several pull through spots, a few back in spots. The campground is well maintained and had friendly staff. Amenities included showers, restrooms, laundry, small store that sells firewood and propane among other necessities, ice cream social (for a donation) in the evening, free waffle breakfast in the morning, pet friendly with dog park, playground, and pool (although not super warm). Good activities in the area if you enjoy the high desert. We stayed on 4th of July weekend and even with a full park it didn't feel crowded.

    River Walk RV Park

Parking lot near river and bike trail

It is hard to find many positives about this place. It has nothing to do with the people, but only about the "campground". It is a parking lot. No grass. Very tight. Lots of seasonal folks. There is a dog park. It Is right on the river. It is right on the bike trail. It is close to town. Beyond that. There is nothing that I deem attractive or desirable about this place. So for me personally, we passed. Please check out the photos and judge for yourself.

They greet you when you arrive and show you to your spot. All spots are paved with nice grass strip. Dog parks in two different areas. There are plenty of trees to keep the rv shaded. Walking distance to Walmart.

    Oregon Trail Campground

    Very friendly and helpful staff.

We stayed at Oregon Trail Campground in Twin Falls, Idaho in September 2021. This park is a FHU pull-thru site and also has back-in sites. Our site was flat and level and a snap to set up our fifth wheel. The staff here was very nice and helpful with restaurant recommendations. The only negative for us was that we had to take our pets to the pet area, which was at the far corner of the park, and pets are not allowed to potty on any trees or shrubs. Signs were everywhere stating this. It was difficult to get our dogs quickly to the dog area, which is very small and swampy, when they really had to pee. Other than that we enjoyed our stay here and would definitely stay here again. If you would like to see videos on this park and others, please visit our YouTube channel: Jeff & Steff’s Excellent Adventure.

    Blue Lake RV Resort

    Cute RV park

Cute little RV park off the highway. Very quite with a small lake. Families can enjoy fishing, swimming, yard games, fire pit, and very dog friendly with a fenced dog park. We are tent campers and had a nice spot on lake. only a few tent sites. Super clean bathrooms with hot shower.

Yellowstone Park / West Gate KOA Holiday

Huge RV spots, large store, kept up nicely

Very close to Yellowstone park. The RV spot was huge (patio space, plus grassy area with trees which was great for the dogs!) although we paid for the premium spot. Dog park was nice for the pups. No complaints at all.
