    Overview

Malad Summit Guard Station is located 14 miles north of Malad, Idaho on Malad Pass just off I-15. The rustic one-room cabin is in a forested setting in narrow Mill Creek Drainage, and offers a secluded retreat on fenced acreage surrounded by scenic high country views. The original guard station was established in 1908, but was replaced by the existing cabin in 1934. The cabin is accessible by car when there is no snow. Guests should be prepared in snowy conditions to ski, snowshoe or snowmobile half a mile from the plowed road to reach the cabin. The guard station offers many amenities for a comfortable stay, but fewer conveniences are available in winter.

The surrounding area offers a variety of recreational activities. Trails are provided for hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders and off-road vehicles (Idaho OHV safety message).Anglers can fish for small brook trout in Mill Creek. Hunting for game and game birds is another popular pastime.

    So clean!

The place is big and the locals certainly come here. Each site has a picnic table, a fire ring and some grass. They’re fairly level. The bathroom and the showers are huge and very clean. Small trees at each site now so until they get big, there won’t be much shade in the summer. Very close to the town for the soaks. It’s very close to the highway which is a plus, but there can also be some traffic noise. Beautiful views.

    Lava Hot Springs East KOA

    Nice KOA-Poor RV Sites Design

The KOA is just off US-30, so easy to find. Our GPS and Waze did not have the exact address, but you can easily see the KOA sign coming in from the east. We were traveling with another couple and there were basically two marked check-in spaces. You have to pay attention to where you position your rig so you don't block office car parking. We had reserved a premium K-9 site and were assigned site 102 at check-in. Site 102 was 1 of 3 premium sites next to the office. The problem with site 102 was 1) there was a truck parked there with no owner in sight, 2) trees that would have scraped the top of our 5th wheel, and 3) a very difficult and tight back-in swing on this 90-degree site with our 40' rig. You need to be an expert backer, or very lucky, to clear the trees at the entrance of this site if you're in a larger rig. Sites 100 and 101 do not have these same obstacles and with the river view, are arguably the best sites in the park. We went back into the office to request a different site and were assigned a non K-9 premium back-in site, 200, in their new area. We would have enjoyed the original site as it does have a nice river view. Sites were under construction in the 200 area and each site is highlighted by 7-inch high and 6-inch wide cement curbs. Whoever designed much of this CG did not understand RVs. It was challenging to back into your site as there are also cement barriers to protect the sewer hookups off the curbs in front of sites on the adjacent pull-through sites. We almost tore off a snap pad getting too close to a curb as the curbs are not sloped to prevent this and based on the markings, a lot of tires have fallen victim to these curbs. Also, we had to be very careful going up and down our steps as you have the curb there as well. While we were getting into our site, a 45’ class A was trying to get into pull-through site 221 across from us. Just trying to make the turn onto this row, he ran his rear tires up on the curb around the shower/laundry facility. He still had his toad attached and had to disconnect it to avoid damaging his vehicle. Hopefully, the management of this park will mark that site for shorter rigs as he also had problems clearing the curbs when departing his site. Their free Wifi was decent. We got 3 bars on Verizon and no issues getting a shot to the north sky for Starlink as there are no mature trees in this new area. There are plenty of other CG options in the area, so we will not stay here again. The main positive of this CG is the staff. They were friendly and accommodating when we requested to change sites. They also credited us the diffrence in cost since we didn't get the K-9 site, without us asking for the credit.

    Lava Hot Springs East KOA

    O.K.

Bathrooms and showers are very clean, some sites are widely space, but some are crammed together, otherwise, a typical KOA.  EXCEPT it is expensive and they add on extra fees for people, pets, and vehicles; never stayed at a KOA that does this.  Oh, the road noise is pretty bad also.

    Lava Spa RV Park

Great in town location near everything

The sites are very close to each other but the location in town next to the river, resturaunts and the hot springs pools is the reason to stay here. The river is not a lazy river float but an amazing short rapid filled 15 min rip through the towns river. There is a shuttle to bring you back to the drop in to do it over and over again or a short walk.

    Lake Walcott State Park

Well Managed State Park & Campground

We stayed here the end of September. Our Garmin RV GPS and Google Maps had us exit earlier than exit 216 off of Interstate 84 coming from the NE. The emailed state park instructions have you get off at exit 216. Since the roads looked RV-friendly on Google Maps, we took the earlier exit. It was fine, but exit 216 would have been more of a straight shot. The RV GPS and Google Maps eventually followed the brown Walcott SP signs all the way to the campground (CG). We had a couple of interesting turns at the far side of Rupert, but no big deal. When we arrived at the CG check-in building, it was unmanned. Since we had paid online, we paid the $7 vehicle fee per day via envelope and then proceeded to the CG. As a side note, the next morning, we got a call from the park office that our tow vehicle was included in the nightly camping fee, so they gave us our envelope back. We saw a right turn to the tent and boat ramp area and decided to go straight, and as we rounded a corner, we saw the RV campsite sign and proceeded to pull through site 5 with water and electric. The site was plenty big enough for our 40’ 5th wheel and our F-450. The water and electric were in the middle of the site, which was nice. There was decent water pressure, and we had a clear shot to the north sky for Starlink; however, to the south were mature trees. This site had decent spacing between the adjacent sites. We got 2 bars on Verizon. There are two tent areas, one that’s to the first right with the day-use area and another that’s adjacent to the RV CG and cabins. Most sites here will take larger rigs, and the center and north sites will give both north and south shots for satellite. There were a couple of interesting quirks with this state park. 1) The park’s sprinkler watering times were special, with our site getting an hour's worth at 1:00 PM with five rainbird sprinkler heads. However, the grass and trees were in good shape for this desert-ish area. 2) As we have seen with COEs, there’s a dam between the lake and the river, so when they open or close the floodgates, there’s a siren that goes off until the process is completed. We had this happen our first night at 1:00 AM. In the park’s defense, they have both of these activities posted in several locations. There are a ton of areas to walk your dog, and we saw deer during our walks. There’s a dump station located as you enter the CG area. We enjoyed our stay at this well-managed state park.

    Fun for kids, groups, fsmilies

We love finding campgrounds with unique elements. Hot springs and water slides fit the bill. Tight spots, no sewer were the only downsides. Great groups there during our stay, easy to get around. Nice amenities. Beautiful sunrise and nice staff. It’s a no frills with frills kind of place.

    Hard to beat

It’s hard to beat a site like this in Idaho with so many amenities. It’s a very large site and the fee isn’t bad about $7 a day if I recall. I’ve mostly camped here for a group event but it’s one of the best Idaho sites I’ve been too. Just be prepared for lots of spiders in July, also this last time coming through we were struggling with chiggers

    Enjoy the Wildlife

Nice park with plenty of trees by the Lake Walcott reservoir on the Snake River. There’s a variety of camping areas spaced out for varying needs. The parking lot for the boat launch is spacious and can accommodate many vehicles. The deer tend to come in in the early evening hours to enjoy the park too and are not very spooked by people. Just a short distance from the park is the overflow from the low dam where you can see a variety of birds enjoying the water and the shallower rapids for fishing. This is a quiet campground that’s away from the noise and hubbub of the cities.

    Great Site and Views

This is our second time to Massacre Rocks. The first time was a few years ago in site 32 which is small and not very private, but we still enjoyed it. The site across the way was prime, huge pull through with a large picnic area…site 31. Everything has been great EXCEPT the sites aren’t clearly marked and we’ve had several people walk through our site at #31. Def takes away from the privacy.

    Massacre Rocks State Park

    Great little place to stay

This beautiful state park is located right off of the freeway about 7 miles outside of American Falls, Idaho. There is a little bit of road noise at the park because of the proximity to the freeway but it wasn't a bother at all. The views of the river are beautiful and the sunset was amazing. There are a lot of trails to walk on here, and since the park is pet friendly our three big dogs walked the trails with us. There is a disc golf course, although we didn't try it out. The camp host was great. The bathrooms were clean, although only half of them are open in the off season. The only draw back we could see is that the spots aren't very spacious, so if you're new at parking your rig, or if you have a really large rig, it could be a tight fit. We were in a 33 ft TT and the pull through spot (17) was plenty long, but kind of narrow. Spot has 50 and 30 amp hook ups as well as water if you camp during the summer-no water in the off season.

    Easy getaway

Easy getaway as we're from Pocatello. It was hot, but we had a great time. The camp hosts were very helpful and super friendly. Bathrooms and showers were close and clean. Lots to do with the visitor center, hiking trails, the Snake River, and historical sites like Register Rock and Oregon Trail sites. We had a camp trailer. Water and electrical hookups were great and the dump station is fairly close. We'd come back again when it's not so hot.

    Nice but expensive

I would stay here again if it wasn’t so expensive. The $20 fee per dog per night is the kicker for me. So four our 3 dogs at $20 per night added $120 to our 2 night stay, and they charge this even if you stay in a tent which I think is ridiculous.

Basic and noisy - needs an update

The restrooms are very old and not very inviting (a lot worse than most of the state parks I‘ve visited), shower door didn‘t lock, water was rarely warm and in the men‘s shower there was no light. Construction work began in the early morning, which was much noisier than the nearby railroad..

    Nice Location

We stopped her in October and  the water level was extremely low.   The boats were dry docked and could not access the marina.  We chose this campground because we wanted to visit American Falls, which we did.  The area was beautiful, but there was not enough water to create a fall.

The campground is very peaceful with very large spaces and well kept.   We has a large grass area with a picnic table and fire pit, fires were prohibited while we were there because of the low water conditions.  Behind our space was the river/lake area that was dry.   Still the park had great views of the mountains and was very pretty.   There are many trails around for bike riding or off road vehicles.

The sites are full hook up, there is a bath/shower house and a laundry.  The staff is very helpful.  We were a bit early and when we arrived Jason was mowing our space.  It was completed very quickly.  There are restaurants in town about 5-10 minutes away and a grocery.  Wifi was excellent on T-Mobile and Visible.

    Great Location

We stayed here for 4 days/3 nights in October.   The location is directly across the street from the hot spring pools.   Our spot #6 was on the river.  We walked across the street to the hot spring pools and a park where in the summer you can tube the river.  At the back of the RV park is a trail you can walk along the  river and will come to a place where you can enter the river right into a hot spring.   The small 15 space campground is right on main street and you can walk to a large number of sites, restaurants, shops, historic museum and buildings and a small market.  All the spaces are full hook up and have a concrete patio pad and trees for shade.   If you need to charge solar the space in front of each spot has full sun.  There is also a path near the hot springs pools that follows the river and is paved.
