Lake level is 50’ below the campsites

No one is here on a beautiful October long weekend Saturday. I can see why. The reservoir level is way down! Just getting to the water is a challenge. Maybe this was nice years ago but it’s a good ways out from Orfino. Not worth the drive.

              Nice Spot

My husband and I were looking for a quick spot to camp and found this right off the highway, it was perfect for a last minute camping. There’s a few more spots off the highway. We loved that it was right on the river, too. Pretty easy access, but if you have a longer trailer than I would suggest going in the first turn out, because the second one is tight.

              Deyo Reservoir

              Small but beautiful lake campground

We were riding the Idaho BDR (Backcountry Discovery Route) and needed a place to camp near Pierce.  There aren't many options that are accessible for our Support Truck but found Deyo Reservoir as a welcome spot.   The West sites are very open and close to each other and are what you see first.  I kinda stumbled down to the East Campground which is more for Truck/Tent camping and is wooded and cooler (it was 95 degrees when we rode in).  Typical for Idaho the sites were nicely spaced, well maintained (it is hosted) and the Vault Toilet was very clean.

THE BEST CAMPING SITE OF OUR TRIP

Took about an hour to get to our campsite, but was so worth it. Was a creek at the top of a mountain in the middle, I guess hence the name. Local had wondered how we found his special fishing spot. Was a place to swim, but we did not get in. Such a beautiful view and lots of nature to see.

              Easy access RV park

All paved parking spots and easy to access! Only downside is having to walk the dogs across the parking lot to go to the bathroom in the grass, but it’s nice to have the grass! Dog poo bags and trash cans available.

Great free camping on the Salmon River. We stayed there one night and it was very nice picnicking along the Salmon. The campground has a single vault toilet that was very clean. The campground can accommodate large RVs as it's mostly a large gravel parking lot. We would definitely stay here again.

              Riverside retreat

Nice campground along the North Fork of the Clearwater. There are stairs by one of the vault toilets to walk down to the water but be careful, it is cold and fast! Several riverside spots including one group site as well as shady groves. Water was shut off when we were there June 2024; unknown when it will be back on.

Great sites big enough to back a trailer in. Sites are close but feel secluded with trees and ferns. Running water was a bonus, after rafting for a week it felt luxurious!

I didn't stay the night, and I'm not a gambler, but I did stop in just to have a look. This was the first casino I have ever been to that didn't gag me with cigarette smoke the minute I walked in the door.

Small campground along Highway 12 and the Clearwater River

There aren’t too many campgrounds between Orofino and Kooskia, Idaho except for a few RV parks. We finally found a beautiful campground off highway 12 or the scenic Lolo Highway. It was small but had quite a few open sites so we snagged one close to the river and bathroom. The highway noise was noticeable but not bad at night. Our picnic table had a view of the Clearwater river (yes, it is very clear and has salmon.). There were steps down to the rocky shore of the river. We net a couple from elsewhere in Udaho who always choose this campground.

              Fantastic Layover

I was so happy to find this place when looking for a place to stay overnight with my horse. The facility has a perimeter gate as well as gates to each pasture (2). The fencing was nice metal panels between sturdy posts. There was Hotwire strung on the inside of the pasture in places to keep horses off the Arbor Vitae trees. Grass was mowed short and my horse could see another horse all night. He had a big water trough to drink from. The hosts checked on him and sent me updates through the evening while I was in town. I recommended them to others I met on my ride through the Lolo area. I was very impressed and happy with the experience.

Great little campsite with the roar of the river.

Found it by accident a few years back.  It sits above the Lochsa River,  just north and west of the Wilderness Gateway Campground.

Both campgrounds are great, but this one is a little more rustic and provides easier access from the highway for camp trailers and stock trailers.

Have to look carefully because it is easy to miss: not well marked...

            Guide to Kooskia

Camping near Kooskia, Idaho, offers a mix of beautiful scenery and outdoor activities. Whether you're looking to fish, hike, or just relax by the water, there are plenty of campgrounds to choose from.

            What to do

            • Fishing: Many campers enjoy fishing in the nearby lakes and rivers. One reviewer at Ohara Bar Campground mentioned, "The river is wide here, with a relatively slower current. If you're here to float the river, this is a perfect pull out/put in spot."
            • Hiking: Explore the trails around the campgrounds. A visitor at Wilderness Gateway shared, "Awesome place for hikes and hot springs. Also dog friendly everywhere we went."
            • Swimming: Some campgrounds have access to swimming areas. A camper at Freeman Creek Campground noted, "The play area was pleasant. I heard that this year (2021) was a bit more run down than usual so maybe next year it'll improve??? We still enjoyed the water and had a ton of fun finding tadpoles."

            What campers like

            • Clean Facilities: Campers appreciate well-maintained restrooms. A reviewer at Dent Acres said, "The restrooms are very clean with only 2 showers! It can get a little annoying waiting in line to shower!"
            • Spacious Sites: Many campgrounds offer roomy spots. One visitor at Canyon Creek mentioned, "My site was gorgeous, looking out over the lake! The Campground was very clean and quiet."
            • Natural Beauty: The scenery is a big draw. A camper at Knife Edge Campground remarked, "Such beautiful area lots of trees and river fun at this camp."

            What you should know

            • Limited Amenities: Some campgrounds may lack certain facilities. A visitor at Deyo Reservoir pointed out, "There is very little cell service and reservations are required."
            • Road Conditions: Access roads can be rough. A camper at Freeman Creek Campground warned, "The road is a test for your engine and brakes, but once you arrive it is a quiet peaceful park with great water access."
            • Wildlife: Be cautious of local wildlife. A reviewer at Ohara Bar Campground noted, "Like much of central Idaho, the wildlife includes black bears and rattlesnakes, so remember to be cautious and aware of our wilder friends!"

            Tips for camping with families

            • Kid-Friendly Activities: Look for campgrounds with play areas. A visitor at Freeman Creek Campground mentioned, "Sweet little nature trails were pretty and easy for smaller children to walk through."
            • Safety First: Always supervise kids near water. A camper at Canyon Creek said, "Swimming in the lake at the foot of a mountain was sublime."
            • Plan for No Cell Service: Be ready to unplug. A family at Wilderness Gateway noted, "NO CELL SERVICE. You just have to be present with one another."

            Tips from RVers

            • Check Hookups: Make sure your campground has the right hookups. A reviewer at Dent Acres mentioned, "All campsites are pull through, and have RV hookups."
