Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA

Kayakers and anglers find direct water access from this rebuilt KOA on Sugarloaf Key, with a marina and boat launch providing entry to the mangrove-lined channels. The campground reopened after Hurricane Irma with new facilities and paved roads that accommodate RVs up to 43 feet. Sites feature dual sewer hookups, eliminating the need to switch between gray and black water tanks.

The open layout between sites creates what one reviewer describes as "more communal than too open," with gravel pads backing up to mangroves on the water side. A pool area with an on-site bar hosts regular trivia nights and weekend live music. The rocky shoreline requires water shoes for comfortable walking, and the channel water differs from the clear blue typically associated with Key West tourism photos.

Staff consistently receives praise for helpfulness, though some reviewers note challenges with site availability and pool crowding during peak times. Mark P. reports "lightning speeds" for the WiFi service. The campground sits 20 minutes from Key West by car, making it a base for day trips while avoiding downtown accommodation costs.

For those preferring a different atmosphere, Venture Out offers a more established snowbird community feel just east of here.

Beautiful KOA

This is the nicest KOA we had stayed at. The facilities are brand new. The location is a 10 and the staff are fantastic.

Lives up to “resort” status

We just sold our house in the keys and bought an RV to travel in, but needed to stay local for a couple months before we could really leave on our full adventure. We stayed at Venture Out for over a month, and weren’t sure there was any point in moving from there to KOA but are glad we did. At first it seemed too open between sites and that we might just bake in the sun but it’s been a great little spot that feels more communal than “too open.” They have a great pool area with a bar and regular events such as trivia night and live music on the weekends. Our spot has two waste water hook ups so we don’t have to switch between gray and black tanks. Every site has wifi and cable Tv along with outdoor seating and fire rings. It’s got more families than Venture Out did, and has more of a resort-camp vibe than snowbird hangout. We will probably stay another week we are enjoying it so much.

Not closed! Newly remodeled

The remodel they have done here is fantastic. The place is beautiful, clean, and really well landscaped. The pool area and beach are both nice. We kayaked right from the dock. It’s pretty pricey, but all the amenities are there. (We we’re really happy we were no where near the construction.)

High Class KOA

Stayed here for a week in February and loved our stay. We had a back in location backed up to the mangroves. Nice level gravel pad with duel sewer hook up options. Good power. Pretty good water pressure. Staff is great. Roads are paved and good for large RV'S. The wifi is the best with lightning speeds. Pool and spa are great, with full bar and food. Lots of activities to do here also. Best KOA I've ever stayed at but expensive. I would most definitely come back.

Beautiful Resort - Short Drive to local adventures

We only stayed 3 nights here but I could have stayed for much longer. It's a beautiful location that is all brand new. Just 20 min scenic drive and you are in Key West. If you have never been to Key West before I suggest you find a golf cart rental as the streets are narrow with parking on both sides.

The staff here was phenomenal. The only downside in the whole park was the laundry facility and showers could have been a little bigger but other than that we were impressed. The Pub had some great cocktails and was right next to the pool which the kids loved. We didn't eat here but did get a recommendation for some great pizza just 4 miles a way (A Slice of Paradise) that was great! They had corn hole (bags as we call it in the north), go-cart rentals, a fun dog park (no pooch with on this adventure but it looked great), kayak rentals, a marina and more.

Something to keep in mind is that this is located on a channel and the beach is not as nice as others. The water isn't the picturesque blue you may be thinking of for Key West. But it was still nice. I definitely recommend some water shoes as it is a little rough up next to shore.

Awesome no longer! Update 2022

Update: we were given a pull thru spot by office which is easy to west and therefore no sun relief except at noon. We asked to move to spot by water that goes north to south and were told that none were available how ever there were at least 5 of those spots open every night we were here? The pool is so hot it is unbearable for even the kids to swim. Not to mention the pool is tiny and so full there is no swimming possible. We ordered food at the pool and right as we get it the lady at table two feet away starts changing #2 diaper and bartender just laughs it up with her? I would think that would be an issue? The “beach” is great but bring water shoes as the rocks will tear up your feet. Overall the all new staff was rude, condescending, and screamed at us at the top of her lungs in front of manager who just stood there. We cancelled all of our future reservations to this campground as it is no fun for the kids or adults. And the internet never worked!

We were fortunate to stumble into this campground when they re-opened after rebuilding from the hurricane. Staff was extremely friendly and so helpful. Was a little bummed the “beach” was not truly a beach and was so rocky it was impossible to walk on but overall an excellent value for the $.

Maybe reopening Oct 2018 after being destroyed by Hurricane Irma!

We drove down from Palm Beach County Fl to Sugarloaf KOA June 2017, before Hurricane Irma to camp for the first time.

I could do a whole comedy skit about a couple in their 50's tent camping for the first time but you asked for the campground review.

Super easy to find, long semi bumpy road in covered with trees (hurricane probably brought those down :( )

Tent camping was separate from the large RV's and pretty tightly packed which was fine.

Large pool and on the weekend the bar had a great band performing. We relaxed on the sandy beach, tried fishing from the bridge and of course drove down to Key West for a few hours.

Very clean restrooms and showers and fully stocked store…even the families with small children kept them occupied and behaved.

Can't wait until they reopen!
