What to do
Stargazing sessions: At Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park, the night sky viewing is exceptional. "This is the only designated dark sky site in Florida. It does not disappoint for night sky viewing. If you're camping here, please be courteous and keep your outdoor lights to a minimum. The night sky's are just breathtaking," notes David G.
Swamp buggy rides: At Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo, you can experience Florida's wilderness. "We went on an airboat ride. It was great. we really enjoyed the rodeo," says Susan K. The resort offers guided swamp buggy tours through natural wetlands.
Hiking trails: The prairie landscape has numerous walking paths. "I found it quiet, and enjoyable place to be alone with my thoughts and hiking. I was met with groups of wild turkeys and other animals and enjoyed peaceful wondering," shares Anjuli W. about Kissimmee Prairie.
What campers like
Remote location: The distance from urban areas creates a peaceful atmosphere. "Expect a long travel to this remote site. It's a couple miles of reasonably decent dirt roads to get there, after several miles of remote highways," explains David G. about Kissimmee Prairie Preserve.
Wildlife encounters: Jonathan Dickinson State Park offers abundant wildlife viewing. "We've seen otter, tortoise, birds, eagles so far. Nice sites in two campgrounds," reports Janet H. The park's diverse habitats support many animal species.
Clean facilities: Campers appreciate well-maintained bathrooms. "Bathrooms were very nice and cleaned daily. Parts of the hiking trails were flooded and muddy. Overall a very well maintained campground with lots of wildlife and a nice dark sky," notes Monte W. about his stay at Kissimmee Prairie.
What you should know
Bring supplies: Istokpoga Canal Boat Ramp And Campsite is remote with limited facilities. "It is right off the main road so no dirt road to get there though you have some road noise but you can get back away from most of it. Lots of wildlife in the woods, nothing bothered the campsite," shares Jerry C.
Weather considerations: Summer heat can be intense. "Being from the area I am prepared for the weather. If you aren't familiar with central Florida summers, which is about 11 1/2 months of the year it's hot, humid, and loaded with bugs," warns Joseph M. about camping at Istokpoga Canal.
Cell reception varies: Coverage can be spotty in rural areas. "Be aware of telephone phone reception. At our spot we could not get any reception with ATT. After buying a Verizon hotspot down the road in Lake Wales, we were able to WFH," reports Andoni G. about River Ranch.
Tips for camping with families
Pack plenty of water: Florida heat requires constant hydration, especially when horseback riding. "All the sites were full during the first night and a little over half were full on the second night. The dirt road on the way to the campground was very smooth. Definitely bring everything that you need because there is nothing around for many miles," advises Monte W.
Visit educational centers: DuPuis Campground offers learning opportunities. "FREE stay, register at the SFWMD site and request a permit. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table. Various trees at the camp sites to provide shade," explains J R. The surrounding area features educational trails about local ecology.
Bring activities: Entertainment options can be limited. "We took a 3 hour canoe trip, $25 well spent. Next day rented a bike. Good hiking trails too," shares Brian M. about Jonathan Dickinson State Park.
Tips from RVers
Book early: Popular equestrian campsites fill quickly. "We stayed in spot 323 which had its own swing and fireplace. Our 37 ft rig fit perfectly and five year old loved riding bike around the park. Everyone was super friendly and I recommend renting a golf cart, though expensive at $60 a day," advises Andoni G.
Utility connections: Vero Beach Equestrian Club offers electric and water hookups for RVs with horse accommodations. With 9 RV sites available, this newer facility provides a more intimate camping experience for equestrians.
Prepare for rough roads: Access to some horse camps requires careful driving. "Washboard road for miles to get to the hammock, and it was in bad shape. Had fun at campground, even tho it poured the entire weekend!" shares Lauren W. about her experience at Kissimmee Prairie.
