Best Tent Camping near Mexico Beach, FL

State forests and public lands surrounding Mexico Beach, Florida offer several primitive tent camping options for those seeking natural settings near the Gulf Coast. Cotton Landing and Hickory Landing Campground provide tent-only sites within easy driving distance of Mexico Beach, while Point Washington State Forest's Eastern Lake Campgrounds (Areas 1 and 2) offer walk-in tent sites about an hour west. El Governor Motel & RV Park in Mexico Beach itself accepts tent campers and provides direct beach access, though with limited privacy compared to the more secluded forest options.

Most tent campgrounds in the region feature basic amenities suited for self-sufficient campers. Sites typically include gravel tent pads, fire rings, and picnic tables, with pit toilets being the standard bathroom facility. Water access varies significantly between locations, with White Oak Landing offering sulfur water from a natural spring, while most primitive tent sites require campers to bring their own water supply. Forest roads leading to backcountry tent camping areas can become challenging after rain, with several campers reporting deep puddles that may require higher-clearance vehicles. Reservations are required for some locations, particularly Point Washington State Forest, where campers receive gate codes for access.

Tent campers frequently mention the peaceful atmosphere as a primary benefit of these locations. According to reviews, Eastern Lake Campground sites "felt nicely distanced from other sites" and provide good tree cover for shade and hammock camping. One visitor noted that Point Washington's primitive tent sites offer "ample hiking and biking trails" with access to a 10-mile loop trail system. Sites at Cotton Landing were described as "very peaceful during slow time of the year," though campers should be aware of potential ticks in wooded areas when gathering firewood. The proximity to beaches varies, with most forest campgrounds requiring a 15-20 minute drive to reach Gulf shores, while El Governor provides immediate beach access for tent campers willing to sacrifice some privacy.

Eastern Lake Campground 1 — Point Washington State Forest

    Beach camping

Nice primitive campground located near 30A beach. The road leading in is sandy and gravely. The site was for tent camping and offers a picnic table, grill, fire pit, food/lamp pole and a porta house (which was fairly clean, considering). There was also a pier close by. The bed was gravel and uncomfortable but they were actually repairing it while we were there, so it should be quite comfortable for your stay! No hookups or water. We stayed at campsite #1 which had plenty of trees for shade and was closest to the water, but they all looked nice. The beach is right across the bay so it's a short drive to the ocean. Quiet and clean, we stayed four days and had a neighbor for two of them. He seemed respectful to nature and gave us no issues. Overall would stay again, just remember there is no shower to get off all that sand and sunscreen!

Sand Pond Campground — Pine Log State Forest

    Quiet, secluded, and beautiful.

I initially had a reservation at one of the primitive camp grounds, but my reservation was cancelled due to flooding that closed all three primitive camp grounds. Better yet, I got an RV spot on the day of arrival. Great pull-through sites with fire ring, picnic table, water, and electricity. Pitched my tent on the banks of Sand Pond.

The two-mile Campground Trail, part of the Forest Service's Trailwalker Program, winds along the banks of Cyprus Pond, through the mixed hardwood/pine forest, and around Sand Pond. This is a nice and easy, well-maintained, level trail.

Was lulled to sleep by the croaking of bull frogs while watching the moon rise from my sleeping bag. A thoroughly enjoyable stay.

Eastern Lake Campground 1 — Point Washington State Forest

    Forest Nights

I liked this forest and thought it was very pretty. Good distance to beaches, although I didn’t see a way to walk to the beach - we drove. I would not chance the forest roads in a sedan. You might be okay if it stays dry but if it rains you will not be in good shape. Lots of roads and trails to explore.

Pros and cons of each campground

Campground 1 Pros: can park in your site, further apart, no highway noise Cons: only have access to a tiny part of the lake, breeze kind of blocked by trees

Campground 2 Pros: beautiful lake view and easy access to water, prettier view, more breeze Cons: traffic noise, cannot park in your site

Both campgrounds have a bathroom (I did not use so not sure of conditions). Every site has a fire pit, bbq pit, picnic table, and lantern pole.

    Would definitely camp here again.

Tate's Hell State Forest High Bluff Primitive Campsites, FL

    Secluded sites, great night sky

We camped at Pidcock Road Campsite #49 during the 2020 Leonid meteor shower.  Nice place for dogs (req'd on leash) as no other campsites nearby.  Very quiet, no water or electricity.  Don't trust google map for road directions, you have to approach from the east or north.  Dirt roads could be an issue if wet and for larger RV-type set-ups.  Marginal cell phone coverage (AT&T).

Tate's Hell State Forest High Bluff Primitive Campsites, FL

    Great!

There are 3 separate High Bluff Primitive campsites, one at Dry Bridge, one at Rake Creek and one at Pidcock Road.  Each spot is so far away from each other that you feel completely secluded, which is nice.  We stayed at Pidcock Rd.  Even though nobody was around we still kept the dogs on leash because the spot is surrounded by water on 3 sides, and we didn't want to risk any alligator attacks.

Site wasn't totally clean but definitely not the worst we've seen.  There is a fire ring, picnic table, and grill.  No toilet or garbage facilities so please pack out your waste.

Road in was bumpy with some huge pits but easily navigable even in our 26ft class c, just watch the road and take it slow.  There was no cell service on the roads once we entered the dense forest but the spot itself was cleared of trees enough that we got service on ATT and Verizon.

We followed the step by step directions that were in the confirmation email and not google maps' directions and we had no problems.

Site was $9/night plus tax and fees which brought it to $16.79 for the one night.

    Tate's Hell State Forest

    Tate's Hell State Forest

Tate's Hell State Forest is a primitive dispersed camping area slightly north the Gulf of Mexico in the Florida Panhandle region. Instead of a single campground with multiple sites, Tate's Hell provides individual camps sites through out the forest, many of which are along the Carabelle River. Sites offer fire ring, picnic table and cleared tent area. All sites are accessed by dirt roads that are fairly well maintained. Many of these sites can accommodate a popup or RV, but there are no electrical, water or sewage hook ups in the state forest. If you are looking for an authentic backwoods, roughing it camping experience - this is your place!

Sites can be reserved 1 877 879 3859. The regional ranger station is located at 290 Airport Rd, Carrabelle, FL 32322.

Eastern Lake Campground 2 — Point Washington State Forest

Is located outside of Destin off of 98 east.

Great primitive camping with several spots on the water in camping area 2

Has a “outhouse” no running water or hookups in the primitive camping area. Roads are easy to travel in a sedan. Campsites provide picnic table and grill with a lantern pole and pea gravel area to set up tent. Very glad I found this!

    Florida River Island

    Free! Reservations Required.

There are about 10 sites total at this free campground.  There is a tent-only side with about 4 sites, with a pit toilet.  The tent sites are much nicer than the RV sites.  They are among the trees, they are more spread out, and on the water.  The RV sites are all lined up in a row in an open field with no shade.  The RV sites have a concrete pad as well as a fire pit and a grill and a picnic table.

We were here over a weekend and it was really, really quiet.  There was only one other RV camper here besides us and no hooligans coming through, surprisingly.

Good cell service with ATT and Verizon.  There are garbage bins (no recycling).

Not a fancy place but great for free.  You need to make reservations in advance with the Northwest Florida Water Management District.

Eastern Lake Campground 1 — Point Washington State Forest

Four primitive sites at end of road

Set your GPS for the Point Washington Field Office on Hwy 89. Access road 11 is across the highway. Recommend approaching eastward from the west, and it’s an right turn off the highway once you spot it.

Your online reservation will include a four digit gate code, which you will need!

Site is on the extreme northwest side of Eastern Lake, though with all the trees, there’s not water views from the sites.

I camped in Area 1, #3. All sites have a picnic table, fire ring and framed gravel tent area about 12’x20’. There is a shared pit toilet a short distance from all 4 sites.

Sites 1 and 2 slope down to their campsite, and would be difficult to sleep in your vehicle without balancers.

Sites 3 and 4 are more flat and work fine for sleeping in your vehicle.

I came in a day after rain and there were numerous significant deep puddles to get through. I was grateful my Sprinter had knobby tires and was a little higher; even then at one point the puddle was so deep it covered my headlights! If it’s been raining, small vehicles should think twice.

There’s access/views to water about 100 feet from sites 3&4.
