Myakka River State Park offers cabin camping options 19 miles west of El Jobean through a mix of forested and open terrain. The park's 39 miles of hiking trails and diverse ecosystems provide habitat for numerous alligators, with sightings common throughout the year. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, affecting kayak rentals and boat tours during dry periods.
What to do
Fossil hunting along Peace River: Peace River Campground provides access to some of Florida's best fossil-collecting spots. Shark teeth are abundant with proper equipment. "This is a great Campground just outside of Arcadia Florida. It has ATV trails and fossilized shark tooth hunting," explains Laura D.
Bicycling on the Legacy Trail: Camp Venice Retreat provides easy access to this paved trail. "Easy access to Vince and the great Legacy Bike trail. Beaches and parking are free," notes Rich A. The trail connects to multiple beach access points and runs for several miles.
Island exploration via kayak: For experienced paddlers, reaching Cayo Costa State Park Campground can be an adventure itself. "Take the time to plan your paddle around, between and through the barrier islands to Cayo Costa. There is some big water, that might put your panties in a bunch if you aren't use to it," advises Dave V.
What campers like
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Myakka River State Park features diverse ecosystems with abundant wildlife sightings. "Tons of great hiking & even some elevated bridges for site seeing. Tons of gators, birds, deer etc.," writes Amanda W. The canopy walkway provides unique vantage points for spotting wildlife.
Primitive camping options: Those seeking more remote experiences can find walk-in sites in several parks. "They have great primative sites, with hikes that vary from 2 miles to 14 miles to camp sites. Beware of heat, bring plenty of water. Dont depend on water pumps," cautions Michael K.
Stargazing conditions: With minimal light pollution, nighttime viewing can be exceptional. "You have miles of beach with very few people and the nighttime skies are truly cosmic," notes Dave V. Clear winter nights provide the best viewing conditions.
What you should know
Weather and bug considerations: Be prepared for Florida's climate challenges year-round. "It's hot. If you rent one of the primitive cabins there is no electricity, so there is no AC, fans or what-have-you. If you are in a tent...its hot...suck it up and love it!" advises Dave V. about Cayo Costa State Park.
Reservation timing: For yurt camping near El Jobean, plan well ahead. "Cayo Costa can book out as much as 6 months in advance. Plan your trip accordingly," warns David I. This applies to most glamping options in the region, especially during peak winter months.
Seasonal water conditions: "The river was low so the kayak rental & boat tours were shut down," reports Amanda W. Water levels in the Myakka River vary significantly by season, affecting recreation options.
Transportation logistics: Some parks require planning for arrival and departure. "Remember, if you do take the ferry...know the times of arrival and departure...or you'll be staying another day," advises Dave V. Yurt camping at El Jobean-adjacent islands often requires boat transportation.
Tips for camping with families
Beach-adjacent options: Periwinkle Park offers family-friendly amenities with beach proximity. "The beach is a short bike ride away, but can be walked too," notes Michelle S. Most beaches in the region have gentle slopes with minimal currents.
Animal encounters: Several campgrounds feature wildlife viewing opportunities kids enjoy. "This place is amazing. I wanted to take my kids camping with only a tent. Place is very clean and every one is so friendly," shares Lisette J. The aviary at Periwinkle Park is particularly popular with children.
Safety considerations: "Went to drain the tanks yesterday morning and a large sounding gator started to growl territorially at me. So heads up with your pets please," warns jenelle J. Alligators are common throughout the region, requiring consistent supervision of children and pets.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: Thousand Trails Peace River requires understanding their unique system. "Not all hookups are full. Must enter lottery to get full hookup site. Wasted 3 hours pulling into one spot. Have to sign up, enter lottery, look at spot, go back hope your name is called," explains Jeff T.
Leveling challenges: The terrain presents challenges for larger rigs. "I'd suggest avoiding site 37 until it's renovated. Big tree in the middle, and soft sugar sand is hard to level," advises jenelle J. about Koreshan State Park. Bring extra leveling blocks for most parks in the region.
Electrical considerations: "Watch the electricity during high usage the voltage drop, ours droped to 108v for a couple hours, i choose to run the gen during that time," notes Thomas E. about Peace River. This is particularly important during summer months when air conditioning is necessary.
