Cabin camping near Clinton, Connecticut offers a variety of accommodation options within 30 miles of the shoreline. Located on the Long Island Sound, this region experiences humid summers with temperatures typically ranging from 70-85°F and moderate rainfall. Most cabin sites remain open from April through October, with a handful maintaining year-round availability for winter cabin stays.
What to do
Beach access from cabin sites: Hammonasset State Park Campground is within walking distance of beach areas. "Beautiful Connecticut beach sits just steps away from your campsite. Well kept showers and bathrooms are abundant and the camp store has the majority of what you need. You can ride your bike from your site to the playground, store, beach, local ice cream shop, coffee shop, or our family favorite, meig's point nature center," notes one visitor.
Hiking trails: Rocky Neck State Park Campground offers hiking paths with coastal views. A camper reports, "The campsite is only a short walk from the beach and available mountain bike and hiking trails. A great family campsite with easy to get to activities."
Water activities: Riverdale Farm Campsites provides river and pond access. "The lake is perfect, the river needs work. But this an awesome small campground. The kids who work here are so friendly and the playground is nice. They did a show on the beach one night that was fun too," shares a regular visitor.
What campers like
Diverse site options: Most cabin areas offer different styles and locations. "We stayed in Egret. We camped at site #4 (sunny) then moved to #38 (shady). Both spots were quiet, music low and people minded their business. Equal mix of RVs big and small as well as many tents," explains a Rocky Neck camper.
Seasonal activities: Niantic KOA runs regular scheduled events. "So many activities for kids and family. Well maintained facilities. Kind and helpful staff. No sewer hook up, but they do provide a honey wagon pump service, once, free of charge," writes a visitor.
Transport options: Some campgrounds offer shuttles to local attractions. "They will give free shuttle rides to 3 beaches & downtown Niantic, CT," notes a Niantic KOA camper.
What you should know
Bathroom conditions vary: Facilities range from basic to well-maintained. At Riverdale Farm, one camper noted: "Cant give this any higher then 2 stars. We spent three months there and for the first two the mens showers were not cleaned. There was band aids on the floor by the rubber mat that sat there for way too long."
Limited utilities: Wolf's Den Family Campground and others have partial hookups. "Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours," explains one visitor.
Reservation timing: Summer cabin demand requires advance planning. "They cancel every event they schedule while receiving free beach camping all summer. They're an embarrassment and a constant disappointment for young children," reports one Hammonasset visitor about camp hosts.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several cabin locations offer play areas. "The campgrounds are clean and spacious but very open, being a beach there are a few campers who enjoy staying up quite late and listening to music. I don't mind the noise but the nats (little black flies) make it nearly impossible to enjoy an evening," notes a Hammonasset camper.
Entertainment options: Aces High RV Park offers organized activities. "It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up. Some seasonal sites but all were tasteful and not trashy looking," reports one visitor.
Beach conditions: Rocky Neck's shoreline isn't typical sand. "The actual beach isn't too nice; not soft sand, broken shells, and cigarettes. However, the campgrounds have nice facilities like a shop, good showers, a playground, and volleyball courts," writes a camper.
Tips from RVers
Site spacing: Wildwood State Park Campground offers variable sites. "Stayed here for two nights with my popup and was surrounded by large motor homes/RVs. Sites had zero privacy and were all pull through. There was water, electric and sewer hookups at each site, but this was an expensive place to 'camp'," notes an RV camper.
Road conditions: Access roads can present challenges. "Unmaintained roadways. The main one was once paved but has not been maintained; others were dirt (and mud after a rain). High price for what we received," reports a Niantic KOA visitor.
Navigation challenges: Some camping cabins near Clinton have access limitations. "The road into the campground is narrow and winding, so larger RV mss as y have trouble, but there were several of them there when we were there. There is a security gate at the entrance," notes a Riverdale Farm camper.
