Fishing enthusiasts and hikers will find direct access to Brainard Lake and multiple trailheads at Pawnee Campground, situated at 10,350 feet elevation in Roosevelt National Forest. The campground operates from late June through September, with 48 sites accommodating RVs up to 100 feet alongside walk-in tent options.
Two distinct camping areas offer different experiences. The Moose Loop maintains a spruce and fir forest canopy, providing natural privacy between sites, while the Elk Loop sits more exposed due to beetle kill damage from past windstorms. Karen L. notes that "site #14 did have trees and privacy after hearing from others that the Elk loop was bare from beetle kill." Walk-in tent sites provide the most space and separation.
Brainard Lake sits adjacent to the campground, offering rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout fishing plus canoeing and kayaking opportunities. Multiple trails begin near the camping area, including routes to Lake Isabelle, Long Lake, and Red Rock Lake within the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Wildlife sightings are common, with moose frequently spotted both in camp and along hiking trails. The high elevation brings cool nights even in summer, with afternoon thunderstorms typical.
Access requires navigating a rough mountain road and obtaining timed entry permits during peak season. The gate regulates traffic to prevent parking lot overflow, creating potential waits even for campers with reservations. Cell service is unavailable throughout the area. Thomas W. warns that "you need to have a timed entry pass to even enter the area." Reservations fill quickly, though hosts report same-day availability sometimes occurs due to cancellations.
The campground includes vault toilets, drinking water, bear boxes, and picnic tables at each site. For additional options, see sites around Ward. Book well in advance for this high-demand mountain location.
