Disperse tent camper

The night sky was very dark and starry. Other campers had telescopes and were very friendly. It appeared under staffed, and the one ranger there looked very tired (possibly alil over worked). Showers were outdated and had like warm to cold water, but I was still very grateful! Had "0" Verizon…

Overpriced for what’s there

$20 for campsite plus $9 fee if you don’t hold a Colorado State Park pass, total $29 for no electric or water and pit toilets not near campsites. No shade at the “Pointe”. It’s a dam on the Arkansas River set in the prairie. Buggy. No easy access to the water near campground. Smell of cattle feed…

Stormy night

This was an amazing camping trip! Very spotty cellphone service (which is good!) except when there is severe weather. Prepare for anything! The hike up to black Mesa was relatively easy and well marked. Want to return soon!

Dry camping with big skies

We camped here in mid May during the week.  We were one of only 5 campers in the entire campground.  It is dry camping so come prepared.  It is also wide open with trees only off in the far distance.  If it is windy, which it often is in eastern Colorado, come prepared.  During the summer the sun…

Good site. No water.

Low light pollution, closest water is at Hasty campsite 10 minute drive away. No wind shelters on picnic tables. Mosquitos can drain a cow in 15 minutes. Bring Deep Woods Off. Closest campsite was about 100 feet away.

All worth it for the sky alone

Petroglyphs, dinosaur tracks, incredible wildlife, and of course the awe-inspiring night sky. Plan your trip during a new moon for best results.

Campground has showers, flush toilets, private tent sites, and a nice swimming spot.

A little hard to navigate but be sure to bring the high clearance…

Nice hike

First 2.5 miles of the hike are fairly easy with the last 1.5 mile going uphill with lose rocks/boulders. Campsites are a little too close together.

Make sure you check your camp site on a map!

Initially made reservations at the point campground. There is NO shade. Cancelled and remade for Lake Hasty campground. Had a good time. Visited in spring, but it was HOT!! Very glad to have had the shade. Lots of owls. Lots of birds to watch. Bathrooms were a bit of a walk, but we were right next…

Loved the area...warmed up to the camp

Like some other reviews have said, the state park isn't at Black Mesa...just near it.

The area itself has plenty of cool things - Black Mesa, wonderful changing views, dinosaur tracks, petrified forest. Some of those things are at the state park, others are "nearish".

The campground…

Desert Fun

I loved the hiking trails and the nature walks. It is out in the middle of no where but nice.

Perfect

Quiet. Secluded. Safe. Beautiful sunsets. Stopped off for an overnight on the way to Great Sand Dunes NP. So glad we found this place. Highly recommend.

Small but a great stop

This is a small park but has some really nice views. This is a great place to stop for a day or two as you are traveling. There is a place to see dinosaur tracks and also 3 corners (Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma). Highest point in Oklahoma, but you wouldn’t know it. When you get on top of the flats…

Beautiful but buggy!

We come to this reservoir all the time! They do a have a boat ramp and a few “beaches” to set up at if you want. But it’s covered in bugs. I know I know, that’s what camping is about BUT they are just annoying! Takes me a good hour after each trip to vacuum they all up out of the camper after each…

Not exactly what I expected

Very large open gravel and prairie area. Long drive from there entrance to sites on gravel roads. Sites near water are still about 100-200 yards from the water. Lots of wind, no trees. The basic sites have a table, grill, parking pad, and tent pad, all on gravel. The area is very large so getting…

Nearby campground to Preserve area

This is the best and just about the only camping area if you want to visit the Black Mesa Preserve, which somewhere around 15-30 minutes away by car. There are many tent and RV sites in the creek area, and there is a bathroom here, though it feels like a high school locker room, wasn't very clean,…
