Echo Basin Cabin and RV Resort provides spacious camping options for equestrians approximately 10 miles from Mancos. The San Juan National Forest surrounds this area, with elevations ranging from 7,000 to 8,000 feet creating cooler summer temperatures than nearby regions. Winter camping options remain limited, with most established campgrounds closing from October through April.
What to do
Trail riding from camp: At Transfer Campground, campers access multiple hiking and horseback riding trails. "Access point for good hikes. One harder hike down to the river and an easier wheelchair accessible hike to an overlook and a view of the peaks," notes Donitza I.
Scenic drives: The area provides access to Mesa Verde National Park, approximately 20 minutes from most camping locations. "This is a very simple campground but just what we wanted. Pack in pack out, clean and well maintained sites, the only sound birdsong," says Sarah about Lower Hermosa Campground.
Water recreation: Nearby McPhee Reservoir offers fishing and water activities. "A hidden gem with close accessability to trails, lake and rivers. Supplies are nearby. Spectacular views of the Vallecito Valley carved by glacer actions," reports Rudi W. about Mountain Meadow Camp.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Many campers appreciate the spacious layouts. "Awesome campground that's free! It's only 10 mins from downtown Durango and is so beautiful and quiet. Great hiking trails around too," explains Madison G. about Lower Hermosa Campground.
Clean facilities: Target Tree Campground maintains excellent standards according to campers. "Host B is in his 2nd yr here and is a peach of a guy. All campsites are carefully raked and put in good shape - no ashes left in rings. Host sells .75 sq ft of firewood for $7/bundle or 3 for $20," shares ED K.
Year-round options: Some sites accommodate winter camping needs. "Only free place near Durango in the winter. We called and asked the BLM & Forest Service. Easy access, lots of space. Bumpy access road and highway noise," states Nicole V. about Cherry Creek Gravel Lot.
What you should know
Road noise factors: Highway proximity affects some campgrounds. "The views are phenomenal. Breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. Starry nights when I stay awake long enough. Decent easy hiking. All-day highway noise in an acoustically perfect valley keeps this place's popularity limited," explains Ben F. about Target Tree Campground.
Seasonal closures: Most campgrounds close during winter months. "We saw there sign—it said OPEN. It was a beautiful campground nice sites. The bathhouse wasn't open yet but we are self contained so it was fine," reports Linda S.
Dispersed camping regulations: Free camping options have restrictions. "Fine, especially when nothing else is available and you need a place to stop for a night. USFS access roads weren't open for the season yet," mentions Tara S. about Cherry Creek Gravel Lot.
Tips for camping with families
Shade availability: Look for sites with natural coverage. "We loved this campsite. The bathrooms are currently open and super clean! Great hammock trees and you get the feel of being out in the middle of the nowhere while actually being pretty close to town if needed," advises Sydneu B.
Activities for kids: Several campgrounds offer family-friendly options. "This place is the best, we had a blast and there are plenty of things to do for adults and children," says Ethan C. about Echo Basin Cabin and RV Resort.
Campfire restrictions: Fire bans occur frequently during dry periods. "Very sweet camp hosts that provided water. Clean bathrooms and large camp spots. There is horse/cattle stalls if you need. High elevation and lots of shade," notes Toni K.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: McPhee Recreation Complex offers electric service at select sites. "According to the campground host our site (16E) is one of the most desired sites. The site has 30 amp electric service. It is adjacent to flush toilets. A few steps from the back of the site is a nice view of the reservoir," explains Bill S.
Site dimensions: Consider length limitations when selecting sites. "Great park for larger RV's we have a 40 ft toy hauler plus the added ramp patio plenty of room. Park is very clean and quiet plus pet friendly. Lots of large Ponderosa pine for shade and scenery," shares Bill about Echo Basin.
Level camping spots: Terrain varies significantly between campgrounds. "You can't beat the central location and access to bike trail. Sites back up to the maintenance department and they are in and out on ATVs and bulldozers a lot!!" reports Goldnbullet about La Plata County Fairgrounds.
