Most cabins include picnic tables and fire pits for outdoor cooking and relaxation. Firewood is typically available for purchase at on-site stores or nearby markets. The Line Shack Cabin, a more remote option, "has a wood stove, bunk beds, and a very small kitchen" but requires hikers to pack in all supplies. Bear-resistant food storage is provided at many locations, as wildlife encounters are possible throughout the region. Visitors should check specific cabin amenities when booking to ensure they bring appropriate supplies for their stay.

    Little gem close to Leadville

Tucked up on the edge of the woods this little gem is only 3 miles from Leadville. The outer edge sites are far better for views and space but even the site in middle are spaced out enough to have table and fire pit in each spot. The little general store is sparse but has emergency stuff and folks are really nice. They have shower house and bathroom and a huge field next door for the dogs to run. Nights are very quiet and huge dark sky to gaze at the stars.

White River National Forest Heaton Bay Campground

    Heaton Bay

Well maintained campsite with moderate privacy. It is a walk on site but parking is right by the site so not far to haul stuff at all. There are trees all around the site but there is an opening/walkway to the neighboring campsite so not 100% private No one on the other side of site so there is an opening in trees that makes for a perfect hammock/ hang out spot which also provides more shade & privacy.

Bear locker, fire pit and picnic table. Bathrooms nice & well maintained. Close to stores and restaurants in case you need anything. Right on lake Dillon so paddle boarding and trials close by too.

White River National Forest Heaton Bay Campground

    Great Campground

This is a well maintained campground. There is water available on every loop. There is electricity and water available at each site on loop A. The driveways and streets are paved. There are walking and bike riding trails everywhere. The town of Frisco is under a 10 minute drive with great grocery stores. Most sites have a fire ring and picnic tables along with bear proff storage containers. Heaton Bay is quiet and lovely. Firewood is for sale at the local grocery stores. There is really something for everyone. We will definitely return when back in this part of the country. Have fun and safe travels.

Castle Mountain Recreation Area at Wellington Lake

    Private but Crowded

Beautiful lakeside camping just outside of Denver. Campsites are a bit close together, but great for groups! No hookups here but you have bathroom facilities and a visitor center where you can buy firewood. Campfires allowed in the fire pits. If you have an RV beware quiet hours from 10pm to 8am, no generators allowed. Lake is perfect for paddleboarding, kayaking and fishing and you will most likely have phone service if you are with AT&T or Verizon. Many day use areas, however vehicles and individuals are charged. For campers, if you bring more than one vehicle you will be charged daily for any additional ones. No drinking water is available, you must bring your own. Dirt roads to the lake are rough and narrow. Close to Deckers for incidentals. Intersects with the Colorado trail for hiking and biking and close to the Colorado River for tubing!

    Arrowhead Point Resort

    Great campground!

This campground is right off the road and easy to find. They had RV sites in the front of the camp and tent sites up the road. We had showers and laundry, general store and wood for sale. Our site was very nice with lots of room. We had a picnic table and a fire pit in the site. There were a few portable bathrooms that were super clean available for night time runs.

    Great views of the mountains!

Castle Mountain Recreation Area at Wellington Lake

    Good Campground for Social Distancing

Currently they don't have day-use open, so there's plenty of space at the lake to set-up and spend the day playing with the kids. We stayed in a mountain site (not lake-front) and the kids loved climbing the rocks and exploring the mountain. Really friendly staff. Quiet hours are not well kept and that would be my only complaint. No motors allowed on lake. Great for paddleboarding (rentals available), kayaking, canoeing & kid's floats.

    Tiger Run RV Resort

Full Service Glamping close to Breck

Let's be clear - this is not camping. This is renting a driveway with access to power, water, sewer, internet, and cable. It is EXPENSIVE. It's also the only place near Breckenridge that offers all of these amenities.

The clubhouse offers a heated pool and hot tub, arcade, business center, locker rooms, laundry ($2 per wash / $1.75 to dry), and owners lounge. There are tennis/pickleball courts and a community fire pit in the center of the resort that hosted movie night during our stay.

No complaints about this place other than the fact that no one answered the phone at the office during our stay. The good news is that they email the gate code and wifi password ahead of time, so we were able to find our way to the site on our own.

    Dump Run by Crooks

This campground is an absolute dump run by dishonest crooks. We stayed here in October on a night that it got below freezing and snowed. We were put in a cabin that had a 2-inch gap between the bottom of the door and threshold. The heater was more like a hair dryer and didn’t warm the cabin. It was 40 degrees in the cabin so we didn’t sleep. The floor crunched while walking on it and the platform bed was metal. When we got off the bed there was a loud bang. When we tried to get a refund from the owners she blamed us and said the problem was we didn’t understand rustic cabins. We have stayed in rustic cabins in the cold months for 10 years and never experienced this. There are many places in Buena Vista…take your business elsewhere.

White River National Forest Heaton Bay Campground

    Lakeside Bliss at Heaton Bay

Heaton Bay Campground, located near Dillon Reservoir in Colorado, offers a stunning lakeside camping experience with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The campground is set in a picturesque location, making it a perfect spot for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy water activities, hiking, and enjoying the serenity of nature.

The sites at Heaton Bay are spacious, well-maintained, and equipped with picnic tables and fire rings, providing a comfortable setting for both tent campers and RV travelers. There are flush toilets and potable water, but no hookups for RVs, so keep that in mind when planning your stay. The campground is nestled among tall pines, providing some shade and a peaceful atmosphere, though there are few trees at some sites, so be prepared for full exposure to the sun.

One of the biggest highlights of Heaton Bay is its proximity to Dillon Reservoir, where you can enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. The campground is also just a short drive from the popular town of Dillon and the many hiking opportunities in the area, including access to the nearby Swan Mountain Trail and many 14ers.

The only downside is that during peak summer months, the campground can be busy, as it’s a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Be prepared for crowds, especially on weekends. The nights can also get chilly, so it’s essential to pack warm layers, even in the summer.

Overall, Heaton Bay Campground offers an excellent lakeside camping experience with a perfect balance of nature, water activities, and mountain views, making it an ideal spot for a Colorado getaway.
