    Lower Beaver Creek Campground

    Small campground outside south fork

Quiet little spot outside south fork. Small campground but convenient for passing through the area. Pit toilet was not the cleanest and had no toilet paper but there were picnic tables and fire pits at each spot so it was a fine campground

    South Fork Campground

South Fork Campground + The Rio Grande River + Fly Fishing

My friend and I stayed at the South Fork Campground for a fly fishing trip.

The campground seems to be primarily a RV campground with 50 sites, but they do allow tent camping with 6 sites. There is an office at the entrance and the staff were friendly. Next to the office is a community room and laundry room.

The RV sites have water and electric hookup. The tent sites do not - at least ours did not. There are restrooms with sinks, toilets and showers nearby the campsites.

The campground itself sits on the Rio Grande River which is a world class fly fishing river. When we were visiting the river was flowing fast and deep, so it was not a very productive time. We choose to fish in the mountain lakes and streams instead.

Overall the South Fork Campground is a nice place to stay for a few days or longer. The campsites were a little close in proximity for me, but I'm one that is accustomed to backcountry camping where there are few people around. The campground is a short drive to the town of South Fork where there are grocery stores, gas stations and outdoor gear and fly fishing stores.

    What all KOAs aspire to

Super easy to access, very nice staff & good amenities. I pitched my tent four one night here. Tent sites are spacious & have a privacy fence between them. All wood burning fires are currently prohibited in Colorado, but there are fire pits for when they're not. I met a couple with an RV that make this camp a part of any trip this direction. They pointed out that even full this camp is still a gem.

    South Fork Campground

    Great campground by the river

This campground is in a secluded lovely valley on the south fork of the white river. Good fishing opportunities and trails for hiking and horseback riding. Spring cave is open seasonally April 15-aug15 with permit required to protect the bats from White nose syndrome. The cave is beautiful, and also wet and cold. Helmet and lights and good warm clothes are essential!

Campsites are close together, some smaller and some better or groups. Site#5 can fit 4-5 tents. Pit toilets which are kept very clean by camp host. Equestrian trailer parking available.

    Alamosa KOA

    Great service!

The staff really make this place five stars. So sweet and helpful and welcoming! Amenities are fine, pool was closed during our post-labor day visit. Store is well stocked and they have a pizza shop on site that can be delivered to your campsite. Really good pizza!! The sites are typical KOA- fairly close but well kept and level. Some highway noise, worth it to reserve a “view site” because they’re farthest from the road and bigger. A+ experience!

This campground has everything you need. Trash pick up, firewood delivery pick nick tables and fire rings at every site. There is a well stocked store with ice, propane, firewood etc. We showed up on a Saturday and there was rock painting and $2 ice cream for the kids right next to the playground. If you want a quieter site however be sure to request something AWAY from the playground! It’s pretty noisy with the kids. Staff is great, views are good and the Sand Dunes are 1/2 hr away. Oh, they have free WiFi and hot showers as well. Kinda deluxe.

    Great Site Great View

Easy drive up 160 from Pagosa. Pitched the tent in the afternoon and headed to town for a soak.

View is killer - we hit it at about peak color.

Guide to South Fork

Dispersed camping opportunities near South Fork, Colorado provide access to the Rio Grande River and surrounding mountain terrain at elevations between 8,000-10,000 feet. Located in the eastern San Juan Mountains, this area experiences warm summer days with temperatures ranging 70-85°F and cool nights that often drop to 45-50°F. Most dispersed sites lack designated facilities but offer proximity to fishing, hiking, and ATV trails.

What to do

Fishing the Rio Grande: Access prime fishing spots directly from South Fork Campground. "Nestled next to the Rio Grande River hand its gorgeous. This is the Rio Grande in Colorado so there's plenty of running water for tubing, rafting and fishing," notes Charles B. The river provides excellent opportunities for fly fishing and casual angling.

Soak in hot springs: Plan a day trip to Pagosa Springs, about 40 minutes west of South Fork. A visitor at Turkey Creek Road shared, "We grabbed a spot with a fire pit even though no fires are allowed right now. So quiet! No cows for us! Great place to camp when so many of the campsites we tried were closed already!" This location serves as a convenient base for hot springs visits.

Hiking mountain trails: Explore hiking trails in the surrounding San Juan National Forest, accessible from most camping areas. Campers staying at Lower Beaver Creek Campground appreciate the natural setting: "Great 12 day stay July 2021. Camp host is pleasant & does a great job. He makes rounds often, grounds & campsites are well maintained, restrooms are clean."

What campers like

Riverside camping sites: Many campers prefer spots along the water. At Pagosa Riverside Campground, "We had a tent site on the river with our puppy. The staff were very helpful and the facilities including the showers were well maintained," reports Calvin R. River sites often fill quickly during peak season.

Mountain views: The panoramic views draw many visitors to the area. "Lovely secluded sites. Road is in great condition. There are prob 4-6 great sites and a few more 'turn out' type sites that could work in a pinch. Great views of the valley and mountains from several of the sites," writes Aliza N. about dispersed camping options.

Quiet atmosphere: Many campsites maintain a peaceful environment away from crowds. At Bruce Spruce Ranch, "This. Place. Is. Peaceful. Your first look at the view on the way in to the campground office should make you want to take a big breath of fresh CO air and leave the worries of the world behind," shares Sarah F.

What you should know

Limited services at dispersed sites: Free camping options like Turkey Creek Road lack facilities. "Great spot right off the road! This spot had plenty of space to park our car (a small RV would fit too). Great views and some shade," notes Ashley M., highlighting the simple nature of these sites.

Seasonal availability: Most camping areas operate from May through October. Several campgrounds close completely during winter months. Lake Fork operates "mid may-mid sep" according to its seasonal information.

Weather variability: Mountain weather changes rapidly. One camper at Bristol Mountain RV Park and Cabins shares, "Dale and Anne are the kindest and most hospitable folks I've met in all my years of camping. They even have farm fresh eggs for sale if you want. Trails, fishing, and other adventures await you in the area." Prepare for temperature swings of 30-40 degrees between day and night.

Tips for camping with families

Choose campgrounds with amenities: For family glamping in South Fork, Colorado, select sites with proper facilities. "We love South Fork Lodge and RV. Not fancy but run by great people who aim to please!" mentions Connie C. about South Fork Lodge & RV Park, which offers full bathroom facilities.

River access for children: Sites near gentle water sections provide entertainment for kids. "We stayed on the river. Large camp sites. Beautiful sights to see. Very close to atv trails at east fork if it is full. But will have drive there. 10min drive," recommends gretchen at Turkey Creek Road.

Check fishing regulations: Children under 16 can fish for free in Colorado, but adults need licenses. At Bruce Spruce Ranch, fishing ponds are available: "The tent sites were large and well spaced. Well maintained and equipped with a great fire ring. Bathrooms very clean and great hot shower."

Tips from RVers

Level sites available: Many campgrounds offer relatively level RV sites. "We ended up here 3 nights due to Thunderstorms. We were on motorcycles with Tent trailer. Very quiet at night & during the day other campers kids were having a blast. Near to town & activities," shares Sheila W. about Pagosa Riverside Campground.

Full hookup options: Several campgrounds provide complete RV services. "We love it here so much we came back another year. Great RV park everything works as it should. You're spaced out so you're not on top of your neighbors. Everything is well maintained," notes Betsy M. about South Fork Lodge & RV Park.

Site spacing considerations: RV sites vary in size and proximity to neighbors. "The campground seems to be primarily a RV campground with 50 sites, but they do allow tent camping with 6 sites.
