Perfect Scenic Dispersed Site

Great spot to setup camp for the night. Very scenic and secluded! I arrived at 6pm on a Monday and I was the only one up there.

Overall the drive up is pretty straightforward if you are at least somewhat familiar with off-roading, for reference a stock 4runner 4x4 should have no trouble accessing these spots as far as clearance goes if you take the right lines!

Peace

Absolutely beautiful spot with lots of dispersed spots to choose from - go a little past the trail head and you’ll see them. Creek, mountains, mountain goats.
Road is rough, had our 1 ton with a truck camper and made it just fine 2WD just had to take it slow. Was the perfect camping spot to wake up early and hike Grays & Torreys Peak!

Best camping spot

My partner and I camped out here at the base of Grays Peak on Steven’s Gulch Primitive Road. It was such a cool spot! We had plenty of privacy while camping. Will go back again! It was the best time. You will need a 4WD to travel to the spot. It’s about 2 miles off road.

Helpful spot to cut down on hike distance

We camped overnight in the car at Gray's and Torrey's peak trailhead at the top of Steven's Gulch Road to do the hike in the morning. There were a few pull offs lower down on the road, but the majority before the trailhead is all private property.

Others have said the road isn't great and recommended 4WD, but let me tell you, it was rough in my small, AWD SUV.

The trailhead lot has a number of dispersed camping sites and fire rings, some offering more privacy than others. Do note that on the weekends (we stayed Friday night into Saturday morning) that the lot fills up early in the AM and some people have no social awareness of their volume level. We were woken up by a constant influx of hikers starting around 330-4.

Alpine Camping

Great location - it’s advised you have a good 4WD vehicle for the uphill dirt road. During the summer the road can sometimes be packed with people parked to hike the Gray’s and Torrey’s trailhead, making it a bit narrow. There’s a handful of spots to pull off and camp, and a portion that is posted as private property. At the top of the road is a great alpine spot a short walk away from a collapsed mine shaft and creek.

Just a lunch break.

Great trail, I unfortunately was only able to make it halfway to the actual campsites. 3 inches of snow and I kept sliding. The parts I did get to see were unforgettable. Found a small campsite in a hard turn in the trail and stopped to make some lunch. Very peaceful watching the snow come down. Side note I’d imagine it’s just as beautiful in fall and summer and a lot easier to make the trail.

Great base camp for summiting Gray’s/Torrey’s

Stevens Gulch Road (321) is a dirt road off of I-70 west of Denver in the Arapaho & Rosevelt National Forests and the Pawnee National Grasslands. It has amazing scenery and access to gorgeous hiking trails to summit Gray’s, Torrey’s and Kelso Peaks. It is a fairly mellow SUV road with plenty of space to pass other vehicles and you will occasionally see passenger cars as well. The road leads to a large parking lot that fills up fast with car overflow parking spilling down both sides of the road. There are pit toilets and bear proof trash cans at the parking lot. The road continues past the parking lot a very short ways to some dispersed campsites by a river that have stone campfire rings. Definitely filter this water as there are uphill toilet paper gardens along the climb to summit.
