Grays & Torreys Trailhead

Highway noise from nearby I-70 reaches this dispersed camping area at the Grays and Torreys Trailhead, where two designated fire pit sites sit alongside the main parking lot. Hikers begin their ascent as early as 4 AM, creating steady foot traffic and headlamp beams through the pre-dawn hours. The US Forest Service manages this drive-in access point within Arapaho National Forest, allowing campfires and pets while providing cell service coverage. Trash accumulation has been noted by recent visitors. Campers seeking sites near Arapaho National Forest should expect an active trailhead environment rather than a secluded overnight experience.

Location here is a bit off

The trailhead parking lot is actually right off of i70. So can be a bit noisy but there are two site on the side of the parking lot that have fire pits. Lots of traffic through the parking lot and people start hiking around 4am so you'll see lights and hear people. Not a bad stay but unfortunately there was a lot of trash around and the early wakeup was a little tough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find dispersed camping near Grays and Torreys Peak?

There is limited dispersed camping available in the immediate area around Grays and Torreys Peak. While the trailhead itself has a couple of sites with fire pits on the side of the parking lot, many hikers prefer to find dispersed camping options in the national forest lands nearby. Areas along Forest Service roads off I-70 in the Arapaho National Forest offer dispersed camping opportunities. For more established options, consider campgrounds in the nearby towns of Georgetown, Silver Plume, or along the Peru Creek Road area. Always follow Leave No Trace principles and check for any seasonal restrictions or fire bans.

What are the best times to camp near Grays and Torreys Peak?

The prime season for camping near Grays and Torreys Peak is summer through early fall (late June to September) when the trail is most accessible and weather conditions are favorable. The area experiences heavy snow in winter months, making access difficult. Summer weekends are extremely busy with hikers often starting their climbs around 4am to avoid afternoon thunderstorms. Weekdays or shoulder seasons (late spring or early fall) offer less crowded conditions. Always check weather forecasts as conditions in the high alpine environment can change rapidly.

Can you camp at Grays and Torreys trailhead?

Yes, camping is permitted at the Grays and Torreys trailhead, though options are limited. There are two designated sites located on the side of the parking lot that include fire pits. Be aware that the trailhead is situated right off I-70, so highway noise can be disruptive. The area experiences high traffic volume with hikers beginning their ascents around 4am, so expect lights and conversation during early morning hours. While convenient for an early summit start, the location offers minimal privacy and can be quite busy during peak hiking season.
