Free dispersed camping in Roosevelt National Forest, Comanche Peak View Campground sits at the end of an 8-mile dirt road from Red Feather Lakes. The US Forest Service maintains this collection of primitive sites scattered across forested terrain with rock formations and meadow views. Campers can access the area by car, though high-clearance vehicles handle the rutted roads more easily.
Several sites spread along the access road, with the most secluded spots at the western end where the road terminates. Fire pits and picnic tables mark established camping areas, and firewood gathering is permitted throughout the surrounding forest. Large boulders provide windbreaks and climbing opportunities, while open meadows on one side offer views across grazing land where cattle roam during certain seasons.
The campground serves as a base for exploring trails around places to camp near Red Feather Lakes and accessing nearby recreation areas like Lost Lake Dispersed. Cell coverage varies by location, with AT&T service reported at some sites. "Highly recommend for car camping instead of trailers or RVs, though it is do-able," notes Meatball W., who managed the road with a small off-road trailer.
Hunting seasons bring occasional distant gunshots, though the immediate camping area maintains no-shooting restrictions. For developed amenities, Dowdy Lake Campground provides reservable sites with water and restrooms nearby.
Description
Comanche Peak Wilderness, named for its prominent 12,702 foot peak, was added to the National Wilderness Preservation System by the United States Congress in 1980. Elevations within the Comanche Peak Wilderness range from 8,000 to 12,702 feet.
Located within the Roosevelt National Forest, this 66,791 acre wilderness area features lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine and spruce-fir forests below expanses of alpine tundra. Many scenic trails provide access to the area that borders the north and east sides of Rocky Mountain National Park.
Camping and campfires are prohibited within 200’ feet (or more if posted) of all lakes, streams and trails to protect water quality, sensitive vegetation and to help assure solitude. Thin soils and mountain vegetation are easily damaged by fire and fires scar rocks and soil. Use a stove, a fire pan or an existing fire ring when and where fires are allowed.
