Camp Capulin

About

At the moment, there is nothing on this 21 acre property except a fire pit, a place to park, a lot of space, and often antelope. It is less than 1/2 mile to public land to the East, 3/4 mile to public land to the West, and about 2 miles to public land to the south. That public land (BLM, Forest Service, and State Wildlife Land) extends throughout the San Juan Mountain Range and is hundreds of square miles. The property is close to La Jara State Wildlife Area, which is great for many outdoor activities, including snowkiting! Other nearby public land attractions include the Alamosa River, Platoro Caldera, Bennett Peak, Cumbres Pass, the Rio Grande, the Great Sand Dunes National Park and much more. Close to many great rock climbing, fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, canoeing, rafting, etc. spots.

At this time there is no bathroom or composting outhouse, so vehicle camping with your own bathroom is what is available at this time.

There is one house that is less than 1/2 from the property. The next closest neighbor (in sight) is more than mile away. Those, and one more unoccupied house a distance away, are the only houses in sight of the property.

The property is flat, close to level, with grasses, short sage brushes, and some cacti. The views are of Chiquito Peak and Meseta Capulín to the West and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the East.

A limited amount of firewood is provided per visit booked a week or more in advance. More firewood is available for a fee. Firewood is only available while there is no fire ban in effect. Be very mindful of the wind when considering making a fire. Make sure your campfire is completely snuffed out with water when unattended.

Be aware that the CO-15 north of Z Road is a dirt road with washboards, Z Road is also a dirt road with washboards, and 3.8 Road is not maintained and is a little rutted and grassy. The distance needed to travel on 3.8 Road to reach the property is less than a 1/4 mile. I have been on the road in low-clearance vehicles that were fine, but I am from this area and think roads like that are "normal". I noticed some camps had bad reviews for being located on bumpy roads, so I want to be extra clear- 3.8 Road is not maintained by the county.

Please also check local weather conditions.

If there are any requests, I can try to fulfill them before your visit. Let me know.
