This free dispersed camping area sits along a rough 8-mile gravel road through Uncompahgre National Forest, serving as the staging point for the popular Blue Lakes Trail. The Forest Service maintains no formal sites here, leaving campers to find their own spots among the trees near Dallas Creek.
Most camping occurs within the final 1.5 miles before the trailhead, where the forest opens into scattered clearings alongside the creek. Katie M. notes that sites "will not appear until you're actually across the forest threshold," marked by a cattle guard and forest entrance sign. The sound of flowing water masks road noise from hikers heading to the lakes, though traffic picks up considerably during summer weekends.
Campers can choose between drive-up spots in more open areas or walk-in sites closer to the water that require carrying gear across logs or through brush. Fire rings mark established camping areas, and several reviewers mention finding spots with small brooks running through them. The 3.4-mile hike to Lower Blue Lake starts directly from this area, gaining 1,600 feet of elevation through mostly shaded terrain.
Access requires navigating what multiple visitors describe as a challenging road with deep ruts and narrow sections where RVs struggle to pass each other. "Totally perfect for anyone who enjoys truly primitive camping," observes Kim M., though she warns about complete lack of cell service. The area fills quickly during peak season, with some campers blocking off sections with vehicles.
Plan for afternoon thunderstorms and temperatures dropping into the 30s even in late summer, and arrive early on weekdays for the best site selection.
