Frequently Asked Questions

What backpacking routes lead to Dewey Point?

The primary backpacking route to Dewey Point is via the Pohono Trail, which follows the south rim of Yosemite Valley. You can access this trail from several trailheads including Glacier Point, Taft Point, or Tunnel View. During winter, the Dewey Point Meadow Trail and Ridge Trail provide snowshoe routes from Badger Pass Ski Area. The Pohono Trail connects several iconic viewpoints along the valley's edge, allowing backpackers to incorporate Dewey Point into a longer rim traverse. This multi-day backpacking route offers stunning perspectives of Yosemite Valley's landmarks throughout the journey.

What is the elevation at Dewey Point?

Dewey Point sits at approximately 7,385 feet (2,251 meters) elevation. This high vantage point on the south rim of Yosemite Valley provides dramatic views of El Capitan and the valley floor nearly 3,000 feet below. Backpackers should be prepared for typical high-elevation conditions including cooler temperatures, especially at night, potential weather changes, and thinner air that can affect hiking pace and exertion levels.

Can you camp at Dewey Point in Yosemite?

Yes, you can camp at Dewey Point in Yosemite National Park, but only with a valid wilderness permit for backcountry camping. This is a designated backcountry site along the Pohono Trail, not a developed campground. Permits can be reserved through the Yosemite National Park wilderness permit system and should be secured well in advance during peak seasons. Last-minute permits may occasionally be available. Dewey Point offers incredible views of El Capitan and Yosemite Valley, making it a highly sought-after backcountry camping destination.
