The Portola area sits at an elevation of approximately 4,800 feet in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains of Plumas County. Temperatures remain moderate during camping season with summer highs typically in the 80s. The region features mixed conifer forests with ponderosa pine and fir trees dominating the landscape around numerous lakes and meadows.
What to do
Hiking to alpine lakes: From Sardine Lake campground, access trails leading to multiple mountain lakes. "Great place for active families. Gorgeous view of sardine lake and sand pond in walking distance and lots of other lakes around the area," notes Jekaterina M.
Off-road adventures: The Gold Lake 4x4 Campground requires high-clearance vehicles but rewards with secluded camping. "The 4x4 campground is great... The trail in isn't very challenging, the first rock section is a good 'gatekeeper' if you will. My 4runner made it in fine, small lift and 33's," shares Jake R.
Historical exploration: Visit the nearby mining museum at Plumas-Eureka State Park. "We stayed in early June, which had perfect weather -- cool nights and warm days. We hiked up to Jamison Lake, which was a good 3 miles each way starting from the campground. There's a museum on site at the check-in area," reports Luna F.
What campers like

Clean, well-maintained facilities: Campers consistently mention the condition of Clio's Rivers Edge RV Park. "Great location and overall a great RV park. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The park is immaculately maintained. The sites are level and the scenery is breathtaking," states Melanie R.
Peaceful camping environments: Visitors appreciate the tranquility of the area. "We had a lovely night here at Jamison Creek Campground in Plumas-Eureka SP! Our site (36) was spacious, had great trees to sling up the hammock, and backed up to the creek which provided a lovely soundtrack," shares Kiley S.
What you should know
Reservations recommended: Popular campgrounds fill quickly, especially waterfront sites. "Gold Lake is a gem with spectacular views all around you. The sites are not available for reservations so you will need to get there mid week to get a prime spot. Sites 17-24 are my favorite with beautiful views of the lake," advises Audrey C.
Weather preparedness: Despite summer warmth, mountain evenings can be chilly. "We stayed in early June, which had perfect weather -- cool nights and warm days," notes Luna F. about Plumas-Eureka State Park.
Primitive options available: Crocker Campground offers a more rustic experience. "This is a dry campground with scattered spots amongst the trees. It is quiet with a couple pit toilets. There was only one other camper when I was there so we had most the place to ourselves," explains Jeannette H.
Tips for camping with families
