Camping opportunities near Jackson range from 400 to 3,000 feet elevation across Amador and Calaveras counties. Summer temperatures typically reach 90-100°F while winter nights can drop below freezing. Several campgrounds remain open year-round with varying levels of services depending on seasonal conditions.
What to do
Frisbee golf courses: Lake Amador Resort features multiple disc golf courses that attract enthusiasts. "There is amazing fishing, boating and swimming. The campsites are mostly level with a shared water source every site or two," notes Christy L.
Historic site exploration: Indian Grinding Rock State Historical Park Campground offers educational experiences within walking distance of camping areas. "This little park tucked into the Western Sierras will blow your mind. It is a significant Miwok Native American historical site, with home sites, ancient Oak trees, and literally thousands of grain, and acorn grinding stones," writes Shari G.
Winter recreation access: Some campgrounds serve as base camps for winter activities. "We used the spot to not be in the snow but make the trip up to Iron Mountain Sno-Park...a 45 minute drive," explains Michael M., who stayed at Gold Country Campground Resort during off-season.
What campers like
Swimming options for all ages: Rancho Seco Recreation Area provides varied water recreation. "You can fish, hike, or swim here. The campsites are spacious and you don't feel over crowded if there is a family next to you," reports Sunshine M.
Spacious campsites: Visitors appreciate the room between sites at several campgrounds. Acorn Campground offers "nice spacious spots. No power or water hookups. Water spigots close by. Bathrooms with flush toilets and a single spacious shower," according to Martha H.
Seasonal crowd variations: Many campgrounds have distinctly different experiences depending on timing. "We stayed at the lake for one night, mid-week, off season. We were only one of a few handful of RVs in the RV section of the campground. I could imagine it being a loud party-scene in the summer," writes The School for Y. about Lake Comanche.
What you should know
Insect concerns: Summer brings unwanted dining companions at some locations. "The only and biggest downfall was the meat bees. Absolutely ruined the trip. We couldn't eat together cuz we all had to escape to our sites and quickly eat. Recommend bringing nets and tents to eat under," warns Mrs G. about Gold Country Campground Resort in August.
Wildlife encounters: Beyond the typical deer and turkeys, campers might encounter less common species. "I woke up with 4 deer casually strolling through our campsite, a huge group of turkeys were cruising around the whole weekend... We saw a tarantula near the tee box on 2," reports Christy L.
Trash management: Some sites require extra attention. At Lake Camanche South Shore, one visitor noted: "We were a party of six, in 2 adjacent sites nearest the lake, spent the first 30+ minutes policing up ALL manner of trash; some of it appeared to have been there for YEARS."
Tips for camping with families
Water play areas: Lake Comanche offers family-friendly aquatic features. "Amador is a laid back camping spot that never disappoints. Great for families. They have a water hole with a fun slide, which is all kept nice and clean with tables you can sit at," shares Moonlit_starrynights.
Road safety: Multiple campgrounds have minimal vehicle traffic, creating safer environments for children. "Little traffic so our kids could ride their bikes with no worries," notes Blake T. about Gold Country Campground Resort.
Seasonal heat preparation: Summer temperatures often exceed 90°F, requiring adequate planning. "It was hot but cooled down nicely during the evening. We had a couple of trees behind us to filter some of the sunlight," reports Traci J. about her Lake Amador stay.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: At Jackson Rancheria RV Park, location matters for views. "We specifically stayed in spot 24, but any of the spots along the back have a beautiful view of the canyon," recommends Chesney S. about this pet-friendly camping option near Jackson.
Hookup variations: Not all sites provide equal services. At Pardee Reservoir Recreation Area, "Campground has only 10 or 12 hookup sites. Rustic, good size sites. Reservations for those sites are very hard to get," cautions Gail M.
Leveling considerations: While many campgrounds have improved pads, some require additional equipment. "The sites are all dirt but we were lucky and ours was perfectly level. Some of the sites are close and others provide a really good amount of room," explains Blake T.
