Yosemite cabin accommodations range from basic tent structures to fully-equipped lodgings in the El Portal area. Located at 1,800 feet elevation, El Portal serves as the western gateway to Yosemite National Park along Highway 140. The region experiences hot summers with temperatures often exceeding 90°F and mild winters, making cabin camping available year-round despite seasonal differences in amenities.
What to do
Swim at nearby pools: Rainbow Pool is a popular swimming spot close to Yosemite Pines RV Resort. "I love how I can walk from here to several hikes, like Vernal and Nevada Falls. You can also walk to Curry Village for food, drink or some shopping," notes one visitor about the recreational options.
Hike Half Dome trail: For adventurous campers, the famous Half Dome hike is accessible from Yosemite Valley Backpacker's Campground. "Stayed here before a 2 night trip through the backcountry. A guaranteed campsite in the valley with no reservation," according to one backpacker who used the campground as a basecamp.
Utilize park shuttles: Rather than dealing with parking issues, many cabins offer access to park transportation. "The YART bus (that shuttles you into the park) stops at the hotel next door. It doesn't run frequently, and we had to catch it really early (7 am), but it was $20 for a family of four (round trip), and that included admission to the park," shares a visitor at Indian Flat RV Park.
What campers like
River access: Cabins along the Merced River provide direct water access. At Housekeeping Camp, "Some campsites are considered 'river-front' but all campsites are pretty close to the river. The only major complaint I have is that I wish rangers or staff came by at 10 (start of quiet hours) because the sound travels quickly."
Electrical outlets: Many cabin facilities offer power for charging devices. "Bunk beds, electrical outlets, private patio with awning and round picnic table, even curtains for your shared sleeping quarters," explains a Housekeeping Camp visitor about the amenities that exceed typical tent camping.
Pool access: Several cabin properties near El Portal offer swimming pool access. At Indian Flat RV Park, "All amenities are super clean, check in was a breeze and you get access to the pool!" Another camper adds, "The Cedar Lodge next door has an indoor and outdoor pool available for the RV campers to use."
What you should know
Limited cell service: Connectivity is sparse throughout the region. At Thousand Trails Yosemite Lakes, a camper reports "There is no cell service and the 'pay WIFI' did not work for us...but there is complimentary WiFi at the laundry to check in on things that works just fine."
Proximity to Yosemite Valley: Despite being near park boundaries, travel time to the valley varies. "Although it is very close to the park boundary, it is still an hour to the valley. We couldn't get a spot in the valley so we accepted this as the way it was," notes a camper about Yosemite Lakes RV Resort.
Heating varies: Heated cabins are essential during winter months. In Curry Village, "We were expecting foam rubber mattresses on wooden plywood shelves for beds, but the bed frame, mattresses, pillows and Rumpl blankets were a nice surprise." However, another camper notes that "the heater likes to turn itself off at times cooling the tent back down before kicking back in."
Tips for camping with families
Petting zoo access: Children enjoy the animal interactions at some cabin resorts. "With a pool, petting zoo, a corral where they have a fire and s'mores followed by a movie, this is a great place to camp with the kids," says a visitor about Yosemite Pines RV Resort.
Pack entertainment for downtime: Spaces between cabins offer play areas. "Nice open space between campsites. We had the campsites reserved months in advance next to the river," reports a Housekeeping Camp visitor who appreciates the layout for family activities.
Consider cabin density: Some cabin areas can be crowded and noisy. "The cabins are close to each other, you will hear your neighbors," reports one visitor, while another notes that quiet hours starting at 10pm are strictly enforced at most cabin properties.
Tips from RVers
Electrical adapter options: Not all RV sites offer the same electrical hookups. "There are only a handful of 50amp spots and people move to them quickly after someone leaves. Lots of 30amp though so you might want to bring an adapter," advises a camper about Yosemite Lakes RV Resort.
River sites are popular: Prime spots near water features fill quickly. "We ended up on the 'outside' of the spots in the trees. But, we did not have anyone in either side of us. Huge spot. It's pretty here," shares an RV camper about site selection strategy.
Stock up before arrival: On-site stores have limited supplies at premium prices. "No nearby grocery so have what you need. The Yosemite village store has quite a selection but it is an hour away," cautions a visitor about planning for provisions when staying in cabin accommodations near El Portal.
