San Onofre Recreation Beach and Camping

The best Military beach retreat ever!

This campground is so picturesque! It has a camp store, cabin rentals, and camping spots 10 feet from the sand. There are tent only, partial hookup, and full hookup sites available. Other amenities include playground, bathrooms and showers, a baseball field, and even a large gathering hall! The only downside to this location is that it is for military only, but this keeps the crowds down. The ocean wildlife is so cool, and at low tide you can see octopus, starfish, and all kinds of small fish/crabs. The views are spectacular!

    Bonita Ranch Campground

    It’s okay 😐

Pros: campground is very short walk to Lytle Creek. Also close to the trail for a hike to Bonita Falls.

Cons: Not enough bathroom facilities for the amount of campsites. Women’s restrooms had only two stalls, constantly a long line. Also quiet hours are not enforced.

Bring cash if you want to rent a fire pit. Sites do not have their own fire rings and you must rent one.

    Rancho Jurupa RV Park

    Near Historic District

A little something for every type of camping. Cabins, paved pull through & natural dirt & grass. Friendly staff to check us in gates close at 10:pm your provided with a security gate code to get back in if your out late.

Lots of families with children, fishing for catfish in the little lake which is shaded with trees and plenty of tables to picnic by the lake. Playground plus lots of grassy areas. We stayed in the natural area with hook-ups everything worked great.

Neighbors were nice, cute set ups with twinkle lights and people enjoying outdoor fire pits. Campers we’re playing music, laughter echoes through camp ground but nothing too loud and all quiet later.

We drove over to the Mission Inn (8 min drive) enjoyed lunch. Their is a pedestrian only shopping area with a Saturday farmer’s market plus lots of restaurants.

The campground sells firewood plus has a little store. Would stay again.

    Lake Hemet Campground

    Great Time!

Visited the last 2 weeks of August. Great place for family and kids. Affordable. Campsite #295. You can fit two 10' x10' canopies to cover the bench table, and fit 2 individual tents (4-6 person) OR a bigger 12p tent however you decide to position it. It has its own Fire pit. Different campgrounds for all chosen methods (Tent, RV, Glamping, etc..) There's restrooms you can use. There's showers you can pay per use. The swim zone isn't too far from this campsite, 5-10 min walk w/ no accessories. If you have little ones, you can take them with a wagon but I'd recommend just driving your car with a few items to the zone. Bring your own shade for this campsite, your own water too. The marketplace is near the entrance BUT they only sell individual waters (No 48 pack types). You'll definitely hear your neighbors snore at night after a long day LOL.. quiet hours are from 10pm - 8am. Overall, this is a great spot. If you're lucky to snag other spots with trees covering you then great but this is still a good campsite. Happy camping! ... Oh yeah, T-Mobile no service up there (apparently Verizon, AT&T do)

    Millard Trail Campground

    Great campground for hiking/biking

Cool drive to get to the campground. You drive up and down these hilly roads up the mountain to get there. Once there, there's a parking lot that fits about 20 cars. There's about 100 yd hike to the campsites. There's a road that leads to the campsite but it's been blocked off. Only the campsite managers use that road so it's not accessible by RV, just tents. A campsite manager stays in a little trailer overnight so if there's any problems there's somebody there you can go to and ask for help. There's about six campsites and their first come first serve, no reservations. I went during the week and was the only one camping. This place is heavily used for day camping and hiking. There's not a lot of privacy because there's always lots of people passing by who are hiking and biking. You can stay overnight which I did and everything was fine but there's not a lot of privacy. The next day as I was leaving there was another guy sitting up his tent. I bet on the weekends they can fill up pretty fast. It's in Bear country so they provide food storage for each campsite also trash containers too. Each side has a picnic bench and a fire pit. The fire ban has been lifted so you can have a fire. Each fire pit had wood left at it so you didn't have to go searching for campfirewood. Bathrooms included male and female toilets but no showers or water. There's a creek that runs through the campground which makes it very pretty. I saw two to three cabins along the outskirts of the campground that I assume were for rentals. There was one family at one of the cabins the night I stayed. About a 20 minute hike and you can end up at a waterfall which is very pretty. But there are several trails to take for hiking and biking and I saw lots of people doing that. Overall a good campsite four stars. Would have been five stars if they had showers and running water. I didn't see any bears although there was an animal outside my tent at one point in the night I could hear him nosing around. So it's important to keep all of your food and anything with any kind of smell in the bear boxes

    Thousand Trails Idyllwild

    Beautiful Idylwild

We tent camped 3 days 2 nights during Memorial weekend with 3 other families. We really enjoyed the drive up Idylwild, beautiful scenery. I think the sites are a bit too close to each other, I would prefer more space between sites. But it's a quiet campground, everyone goes to sleep early around 10pm. A downside during our visit, is the restroom/bathroom; the resort closed down couple restroom/bathroom for renovation, so we had. to walk far to shower/potty. Maybe they were short staffed, the restroom/bathroom were dirty, toilet flushing issue and trash bin overflow. Overall we had a good time, also be aware of coyotes they come out at night.

San Onofre Recreation Beach and Camping

    Acceptable RV camping for surfers

The beach is about a quarter mile away from each campsite and whether one uses an RV or tent, there’s not much else to do here then take the trail to the beach. They have restrooms and fire pits and picnic tables and they sell firewood. But all of the campsites are laid out like a parking lot with no real ambience around. Very nearby there is a railroad track and freeway which provides a distraction from a little bit nature nearby.

North Shore Campground - Lake Almanor

Beautiful Camping near Lassen Volcanic National Park

We reserved and camped at this beautiful campground back in July of 2018. It was a great experience. We pulled a 27' Travel Trailer from Livermore, CA and picked out the perfect site #94. It was the furthest RV site north of the campground and we had power, water and sewage. It was a lake front campsite so we had a nice view of the lake right in our "front yard" :-) We had a picnic table and a fire pit for our use.
The fishing was awesome, but I suggest fishing in the mornings before the afternoon winds come in as the weather cools down. We had our kayaks and it is a beautiful lake to kayak. But when it gets windy, know your limits :-)
The campground is close to the Lassen Volcanic National Park. We took a drive there for a visit and it was spectacular.
The campground also has a great store there. It has all the camping necessities. If you are into hiking and biking, this campground has the accommodations for that activity. It also has a kid's park.  They also have cabins if you do not want to use a tent or RV.

Launch Pointe Recreation Destination and RV Park

    More than we expected

Spent Spring break here with the family. We read a lot of reviews on this park - many of them mixed. Overall, this park did not disappoint - too much.

Amenities are very good for young kids. Canopy Court area has easy and close access to the splash pad, the playground, a large grass area, and even the pool. The boat launch is very near by too but we had no use for that.

This park is clean! Like no park I have seen before. The staff are always moving around the grounds and “picking up” as they go. Quiet hours are strict - some may see that as a bad thing but I appreciate it. Even with 4 young kids, we like that the park slowed down right on time.

Only arguments - the spots are relatively tight. We reserved a spot for a rig with slide outs on both sides to accommodate our 39’er but it took some creative parking to get the rig into the spot in a way that we could actually open both sides. Once in, we had to make sure we pulled back far enough otherwise the very nice provided picnic table would of been right next to the front wheel. Water pressure is a bit low too but nothing terrible.

Location wise - awesome. We used the campground as a base camp to spend time in LA and San Diego as well as a day in Joshua Tree National Park. 1-2 hours from everything.

    We will definitely be back.

Guide to Colton

Cabin camping near Colton, California offers convenient access to both mountain and desert environments with elevations ranging from 1,000 to 7,000 feet in surrounding areas. The climate varies significantly by season, with summer temperatures often exceeding 100°F in the valleys while mountain locations remain 15-20 degrees cooler. Winter brings occasional snow to higher elevations, creating seasonal access challenges for some cabin locations.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: The fishing ponds at Fisherman's Retreat provide stocked lakes accessible without traveling far from your cabin. "There are 3 lakes that are stocked weekly or bi weekly. It's fun to watch the ducks & the pelicans flying around and landing & swimming on the water," notes one camper.

Water activities: Families staying in cabins can cool off at water features available at certain campgrounds. At Rancho Jurupa RV Park, "Splash pad, park, mini golf great amenities," according to a visitor who stayed in the Cottonwood section.

Hiking trails: Cabin campers can access nearby trails without extensive travel. "Easy access to a pretty trail right behind the campground" is available at Bonita Ranch Campground according to one reviewer who appreciated the convenience during a short stay.

What campers like

Security features: Many cabin locations prioritize safety with controlled access. "Great sense of community and great placement of the gates for safety purposes... Ranger is on constant patrol," reports a camper at Rancho Jurupa, highlighting the security that makes cabin camping appealing to those concerned about safety.

Convenience to cities: Cabin camping provides a balance between outdoor experience and urban proximity. A visitor at Cherry Valley Lakes mentioned, "Staff all friendly and facilities while dated are kept very clean," though noted its location "right next to the freeway which took some getting used to."

Clean facilities: Well-maintained cabins and grounds consistently receive positive mentions. One camper at Mojave River Forks Regional Park reported, "Bathrooms are close by, showers HOT water available... Not many people this time a year. Had a great time."

What you should know

Reservation timing: Cabin availability becomes extremely limited during peak seasons. At North Shore Campground, the reservation process requires planning: "The reservation process is confusing, having to book our spot on recreation.gov, but worth the efforts and $34 to reserve a one night stay."

Noise considerations: Cabin locations near highways may experience traffic noise. At Cherry Valley Lakes, one visitor noted it's "a very noisy location right next to the freeway which took some getting used to the first few days."

Membership requirements: Some cabin facilities operate on membership models. At Mountain Lakes Resort, "We stayed at this resort as a guest of a member and though it is nice it is not available to the general public," explains one reviewer, indicating access restrictions potential visitors should understand.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Look for cabins near playgrounds and water features. A visitor to Bonita Ranch Campground noted, "A little gem hiding out in Lytle Creek! Easy access to a pretty trail right behind the campground," making it suitable for families wanting trail access without difficult hikes.

Educational opportunities: Historical sites within driving distance add educational value to cabin stays. At Rancho Jurupa, a camper shared, "We drove over to the Mission Inn (8 min drive) enjoyed lunch. Their is a pedestrian only shopping area with a Saturday farmer's market plus lots of restaurants."

Wildlife viewing: Cabin sites often provide opportunities to observe local wildlife. At Fisherman's Retreat, campers can watch "the ducks & the pelicans flying around and landing & swimming on the water," offering natural entertainment for children.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Experienced RVers recommend researching specific site locations. At North Shore Campground, a visitor advised, "Recommend 4,5,6 if you can and even the one right next to that (assuming it's 7). Lake is a stones throw away!"

Level sites: Look for cabins or RV sites on level ground, particularly important for larger vehicles. At Mojave River Forks, "We had a great overnight stay at this park. Two other campers were there, and we had no interactions other than waving," noted a camper who appreciated the spacious layout.

Hook-up variations: Available utilities vary significantly between cabin camping locations. At Cherry Valley Lakes, a visitor noted facilities include "Pool, spa (not working, currently), clubhouse, playground, 2 catch and release ponds, horse shoes. Sites are on top of each other, laundry you need an app to use."
