Wind sweeps down the canyon at Mesquite Spring Campground, where campers access 30 sites via a dirt road that keeps crowds lighter than Death Valley's southern campgrounds. Located in the park's northern section, this National Park Service campground operates year-round with flush toilets, drinking water, and a dump station.
Sites spread across open terrain with minimal natural barriers between neighbors. "The sites seemed to be geared more to RVs but those along the dry wash work well for tents," notes MarinMaverick. The campground sits adjacent to Death Valley Wash, where campers explore exposed geology and mountain views. Elevation provides slightly cooler temperatures than valley floor locations.
Strong winds represent the primary challenge here, particularly during afternoon hours. Campers need well-staked tents and wind blocks, often positioning vehicles strategically. The exposed setting offers excellent stargazing with no nearby light pollution. Wildlife includes coyotes and rattlesnakes spotted on trails from the campground area.
The location serves as a staging point for northern Death Valley attractions including Teakettle Junction and the Racetrack. Sites fill on busy weekends, though availability typically exceeds southern park campgrounds. Spring and fall provide optimal weather conditions, while summer temperatures can be extreme. No pets are permitted.
Host services and trash pickup maintain campground cleanliness. Cell service varies by carrier, and the dirt access road may require caution during wet conditions. For additional overnight options, campers can explore places to camp near Death Valley National Park.
