    H&G RV campground

    We really liked it!

An overnight stop on our route. Gary was great, most helpful and it was a pleasure talking with him. This is a rather small campsite and I recommend advanced reservations. Two pull through sites that do not have sewer hookups but there is a dump station if needed. Electrical hookups are 50 amp so have an adapter if you need 30 amp service. I’d certainly recommend it.

    Pendleton Bend

    Nice people, basic facilities

I stopped here for one night with a travel trailer and was in site B-01 for $16. The sites are spacious. For example, the water hookups are half way between the sites to be shared, and my 50ft hose just barely could reach. It is pet friendly and we had fun sitting on a dock and watching the cargo boats. There is absolutely no cell phone signal and no WiFi, so have physical directions on you. The park is only a couple miles from Arkansas Post National Memorial which was very beautiful and worth a visit.

    Cane Creek State Park Campground

Our first camping trip was a great success. We camped 2.5 days at Cane Creek State Park in Star City, Arkansas.

Our Review: The camp sites were very nice, all had either 30 amp or 50 amp electric hook ups and water. The electricity was super convenient with having the space heater in the tent. Most of the sites have nice views of the water too! It was a little too cold to fish but from what we’ve gathered from the visitor’s center they have some decent fishing and lots of other activities! Cane Creek offers several options like fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, biking, etc. There was a boat dock specific for campers closer to the campsites. We were very pleased with the bath house which was really clean and fairly central to all campsites. We will definitely be back when it warms up to test out the fishing!

    Mississippi River State Park Campground

    Beautiful and quiet

This small campground is beautiful and kept very clean. Sites are full hookup. The bath house is very clean. There are four private toilet/shower rooms. All handicapped accessible. My favorite sites are 12, 13, and 14. My least favorite were 9, 10, and 11, but they are pull through sites.

    Wilbur D. Mills

    No host, unkept

This is several miles beyond Pendleton Bend. No host, very unkept, dirty, mostly a fish camp with long term campers. Could be much nicer with a little attention. Lead photo is from Pendleton Bend NOT Wilbur Mills. 2024

COE Arkansas River Merrisach Lake Park

    Nice Corp park

Good, clean campground. Family friendly. Great fishing. Merrisack Lake joins the ship canal to the Arkansas River. Fabled White River National Wildlife Refuge, America’s first national refuge, close by.

The area experiences hot, humid summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F from June through September and mild winters with occasional freezing temperatures. Most campgrounds in this region experience seasonal flooding, particularly during spring rains when the Arkansas and White Rivers can overflow their banks.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Rising Star campground provides direct Arkansas River access with a dedicated boat ramp. "Wonderful small campground on the river. Spacious spots. Spots in the woods and on the river. Playground and boat ramp," notes John R. in his review of Rising Star.

Wildlife viewing: The Mississippi River flyway attracts diverse bird species, particularly in winter months. "The sunsets were taken from my chair on the bank of the Arkansas River," mentions Joseph in his review of Rising Star, where pelicans and other waterfowl are common. "Pelicans are everywhere so cool," confirms Steve S.

Pecan gathering: Fall visitors can collect pecans at certain campgrounds when in season. "We picked up enough pecans for 2 pies," reports a camper at Rising Star, highlighting an unexpected autumn activity for visitors.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Several campgrounds maintain exceptionally clean restrooms. "I HAVE NEVER SEEN A CLEANER BATHROOM!!! BATHROOM/SHOWER COMBO FOR 1 PERSON OR FAMILY!!!" emphasizes Stacy H. about Rising Star's facilities.

What you should know

Seasonal closures: Several parks close during winter months. "Gate locked closed for winter opens up March 1st," reports Steve S. about Ste Marie Park, which operates seasonally like many area campgrounds.

Fire ant presence: Some campgrounds struggle with fire ant infestations, particularly in summer months. Snake awareness: Parents should monitor children in playground areas due to potential snake encounters. "Nice day use area and playground but watch for snakes," cautions Steve S. about Rising Star, suggesting appropriate supervision for children playing outdoors.

Tips from RVers

Electrical adaptability: RV campers should pack appropriate electrical adapters. "Electrical hookups are 50 amp so have an adapter if you need 30 amp service," advises Richard G. about his stay at H&G RV Park.

Limited cell service: Mobile connectivity varies significantly between campgrounds. "Only 1 bar on my Verizon phone," reports Steve S. about Rising Star, indicating spotty coverage common throughout the region.

Boondocking options: Some RV parks accommodate dry camping at reduced rates. "Only $10 for no hookups and a whole plot to myself, no complaints," shares Connor F. about his experience at H&G RV campground, offering budget-conscious travelers alternatives to full-service sites.
