Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Lakeside, AZ

Show Low Lake Campground welcomes pets throughout its grounds with several tent sites and RV spots nestled among pine trees. Dogs must remain leashed in all areas including the nearby hiking trail that circles the lake. The campground provides fire pits, picnic tables, and drinking water stations accessible to campers with animals. Electricity hookups are available at some sites, though not all offer full amenities for RVs. Timber Mesa Trailhead offers a more primitive dispersed camping option for pet owners, with clearly marked trails where dogs can explore the surrounding forest. Campers note the campground bathrooms at Show Low Lake are cleaned throughout the day, making longer stays with pets more comfortable. Wildlife sightings are common in the area, requiring vigilant pet supervision.

Hon-Dah RV Park provides full hookup sites for RVers with pets, situated in a pine forest setting where wild horses occasionally venture through camp in the evenings. The park features level sites with electricity, water, and sewer connections while remaining a short walk from the adjacent casino. Ponderosa RV Resort in Lakeside caters to the 55+ crowd with pets, offering a quieter atmosphere without energetic children or teens. Several hiking trails throughout the White Mountains region accommodate leashed dogs, allowing pet owners to explore the natural beauty while keeping animals under control. During summer months, the higher elevation provides cooler temperatures ideal for dog walking, though seasonal fire restrictions may limit outdoor activities until monsoon rains arrive. Most campgrounds in the area require pets to be attended at all times and waste properly disposed of in designated receptacles.

    Encore Venture In

Great RV Park located in the AZ Forest

Nice wide sites for your RV.  This park is located in the forest area of Show Low, AZ.  At this time, the amenities (due to COVID 19), except for the laundry room, are closed so was unable to give it a 5 star rating.  Location is central to everything.  In fact, we rode our eBikes to get to just about everything.  Temps are warm in June and then cool down significantly after the Monsoon rains begin.  Nice people in the park.  Nice dog park and dog run.

    Encore Venture In

Nice But Sites a Little Tricky

This is really a Park Model Resort that has about 25% of their sites set aside for RVs. The RV sites are scattered throughout the park but they have tried to group them together as much as possible. The sites are pretty level, really wide, and fairly deep. There is a concrete patio with each site. Sites are covered in cinders which are a bit of a pain. They present a somewhat soft surface which is like walking in about 6 inches of soft sand. Almost all the sites have a tree planted right at the front next to the road. Some of the trees are a bit wide which really makes getting into the site difficult. Even though the sites are wide the RV parking area is between the patio and the sewer connection which is about 11ft wide. When you combine that with landscaping and patio covers on some of the park models and getting in some sites can be real challenging for a larger rig. We have a 40ft motorhome and have been to this park probably 8 times. So far we have made it in and out but with some new scratches and a bit of maneuvering. Cell service is pretty bad here. We have Verizon cell phones which usually worked for phone service but sometimes cut out. We have Verizon and AT&T hotspots. AT&T worked the best but not fast enough to stream anything most of the time. There is Wi-Fi offered for a fee but we have not tried that. They also offer cable TV which I believe is free. They have a couple of dog parks, nice common areas, laundry, and a small gym. They have some other clubs and activity rooms but all of those have been closed due to Covid.

    Ponderosa RV Resort

This was our 63 Wedding Anniversary, June 2025

My wife and I have always wanted to visit The White Mountains in Arizona since over the years we've gone by several times on I40.  We decided to visit and  Ponderosa RV Resort in Lakeside sounded pretty good, 55+was great to not worry about being hit by energetic kids (I'm on a cane) or noisy teens and young adults.  We were there to RELAX and enjoy the tall pines and cool weather, which we do not get in  Las Vegas, NV.  The park is great and they have a lot of activities in the clubhouse.  There are some full time residents which is GREAT, they are super friendly and helpful.  The whole area: Show Low, Lakeside & Pinetop are all blessed with friendly and courteous people,  It's almost like somehow they have sprinkled LOVE and PEACE in the air.  We have a Class C and tow a Jeep and have been in several RV camp grounds and  Ponderosa RV Resort is the best for relaxing and enjoying nature and friendly people!!!!

Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area Campground

    Heaven on Earth

Probably one of the best campgrounds I have visited.  It is spacious, quiet, and clean.  The lake is fabulous for kayaking, or just hiking around.  Each campsite is spaced well away from neighboring sites, among beautiful, tall pines.  There is room to stretch out and relax.

There are numerous hiking trails all around in the park as well as plenty of places to ride a bike.

The elevation of 6,200' makes for very pleasant weather most of the year.  I have spent Thanksgiving at this location and loved that it got cold at night and a little warmer during the day.  I have stayed at this campground in the spring, summer and fall - but love the fall the best.

Nearby Show Low and Lakeside are quaint little towns that complete the experience.

    Rainbow (AZ)

    Big Trees, clean air

I have been coming up to the White Mountains since I was a kid. Rainbow campground has been our go-to spot for camping. There are 3 loops that are FCFS. The rest of the sites are reservations. The sites all have picnic tables and fire rings. There are full bathrooms throughout the area and pay showers when is not covid. Big lake is a short drive from the campground, where you can rent a boat, fish from shore and a small store with supplies. There is always wildlife around, especially skunks, so watch your pets. The sites are laid at where you don't feel like you are right on top of your neighbor. None of the sites in Rainbow have hook-ups, bit there is a dump station down the road. There is another campground for full hook-ups down the way.

    Brook Char Campground

Some of the best tent camping in AZ

We're frequent campers, and this is one of our favorite spots in AZ!

The tent-only campground is small, but the sites are large and have multiple great clearings for tents. Lots of shade and easy paths for walking around the grounds, plus there's potable water at several sites. Central bathrooms with running water are kept very clean, plus there's trash service and a (very friendly) camp host if you need anything.

Directly across a small road from Big Lake and the boat ramp. There are several places to go right down to the shore, and it's only a 5-6 minute walk along the road to the general store and boat rental area, where there's also a fish cleaning station. Brookchar is just down the road from the giant Rainbow Lake, so you'll hear some RVs and ATVs on the road, but very minimal.

We camped in site 12, which in our opinion is the best! Closest to the lake with water views, plus parking right outside your site for 2 vehicles (other sites, you park in a main lot). Bring your fishing gear and kayak/SUP (can also rent very reasonably)!

Over Memorial Day weekend, we saw highs close to 80 and lows in the high 30s/low 40s. Only sprinkled once!

It's also just an hour from Pinetop-Lakeside, so it's easy to make grocery stops or even grab a coffee (try Pinetop Coffee House + Roasters right on the highway!) on your way in/out.

Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area Campground

    Fool Hollow

Probably the most beautiful campground in Arizona. Just outside Show Low, in the eastern part of the state, you are nestled in the pine & juniper of the region. Despite being in the middle of a developed area, once in the park, you feel appropriately isolated. We were at a reserved tent site (Osprey 12). All tent sites overlook the lake & a couple of them even have creeks running through them after rain. Visited family on a full hookup site & while the pads are huge, it seemed like you were more exposed to your neighbors. The tent loops all have access to a vault toilet & the middle loop has showers as well (the other loops are still walking distance from showers). There are several day use areas & boat ramps to the lake. Saw (& heard) many different birds & animals. Can't wait to go back.

Guide to Lakeside

Campers seeking dog friendly campgrounds near Lakeside, Arizona enjoy moderate summer temperatures around 80°F at 6,800 feet elevation. The White Mountains region features ponderosa pine forests that stay 20-30 degrees cooler than Phoenix during summer months. Seasonal monsoon rains typically begin in July, alleviating fire restrictions in most areas through early fall.

What to do

Fishing at Hawley Lake: Apache-managed lake with abundant trout fishing and boat rentals at the boathouse. "[Hawley Lake] offers great fishing and beautiful scenery. Be aware that I did experience some free range cattle snooping through the camp at 2am which was a bit unexpected," notes one visitor to Hawley Lake Apache Indian Res.

Explore marked trails: The Los Burros Trail offers moderate hiking with cattle sightings nearby. A camper at Los Burros Campground shares: "There is a trailhead right in the campground (Los Burros Trail) that is moderate/easy and perfect for an afternoon or morning hike. There was cattle in the fields just about 1/2 a mile up the trail."

Mountain biking: The White Mountains region has interconnected trail systems for all skill levels. "Excellent trail system for hikes and mountain bikes and a trailhead right at the campground," reports a Los Burros visitor.

What campers like

Wild horse sightings: Free-roaming horses sometimes visit campgrounds in the evening. At Hon-Dah RV Park, a camper notes: "Wild horses venture through the camp in the evening! Spots are pretty close together, it is very full and mostly full timer/long term campers."

Pine forest settings: Tall pines provide natural shade and cooling throughout the region. "A great base camp to visit the area. There are plenty local attractions: lakes, rivers and streams, wilderness and national forests," shares a visitor at Ponderosa RV Resort.

Clean bathrooms: Maintained facilities make longer stays more comfortable. A camper at Show Low Lake Campground mentions: "For the cleanliness, this campground should get 5 stars. The people who work there clean the bathrooms throughout the day so they're always nice."

What you should know

Camping permits: Many campgrounds require permits or reservations, especially during peak summer months. "Camping is available on a first come basis at Hawley Lake which also offers great fishing and beautiful scenery," notes a visitor.

Limited cell coverage: Connectivity varies significantly across the region. One camper reports: "Cell service is pretty bad here. We have Verizon cell phones which usually worked for phone service but sometimes cut out. We have Verizon and AT&T hotspots. AT&T worked the best but not fast enough to stream anything most of the time."

Weather patterns: Afternoon rain showers are common in summer months. "There is rain almost every day (varying between light afternoon showers and heavy storms)," shares a Show Low Lake camper.

Wildlife awareness: Secure food from local wildlife. "Be sure to put food away nightly, the cows are no joke. They get into everything!" warns a Hawley Lake visitor.

Tips for camping with families

Pet-friendly hiking options: Multiple trails accommodate leashed dogs throughout the region. At Timber Mesa Trailhead, a visitor notes: "Easy to get to, close to town, clearly marked trails and roadways. Hiking views were spectacular."

Age-appropriate campgrounds: Some parks cater specifically to different age groups. "Ponderosa RV Resort in Lakeside caters to the 55+ crowd with pets, offering a quieter atmosphere without energetic kids or teens," explains a Ponderosa visitor.

Accessible attractions: Family-friendly options within short driving distances. "The lake is very large and very beautiful. Most of the shoreline is easily accessible for fishing or lounging lakeside. Words for the wise you can not swim in this lake," notes a Hawley Lake camper.

Protection from elements: Prepare for afternoon storms and changing conditions. "There were four pretty well maintained portable toilets near our camp as well. Be sure to review the rules and regulations on the website as some areas are off limits."

Tips from RVers

RV site selection: Look for level, accessible spots with adequate turning radius. A visitor at Encore Venture In warns: "Even though the sites are wide the RV parking area is between the patio and the sewer connection which is about 11ft wide. When you combine that with landscaping and patio covers on some of the park models, getting in some sites can be real challenging for a larger rig."

Speed bump awareness: Some parks have aggressive speed control measures. "The speed humps in this place are MONSTERS! We had to crab over them so that we didn't leave our plumbing with them," cautions a Hon-Dah RV Park visitor.

Utilities information: Check hookup availability before arrival. A camper at Show Low Lake Campground reports: "30 amp service in some spots, no water or sewage but there is a dump station and water fill station on premises. Open all year and is plowed when it snows."

Surface conditions: Site surfaces vary across campgrounds. "The sites are pretty level, really wide, and fairly deep. There is a concrete patio with each site. Sites are covered in cinders which are a bit of a pain. They present a somewhat soft surface which is like walking in about 6 inches of soft sand," notes an Encore Venture In visitor.
