Canyon Point Campground in the Sitgreaves National Forest features cabins at an elevation of 7,000 feet, providing relief from Arizona summer heat. The campground sits above the Mogollon Rim with temperatures typically 20-30 degrees cooler than Phoenix. Winter closures run from November through April at most facilities, though some private operations maintain year-round availability.
What to do
Hiking the Sinkhole Trail: The trail at Canyon Point Campground offers a family-friendly 2-mile round trip hike through pine forests. "Nice little (about 2 miles round trip) hike to Sinkhole. Campground close to several wonderful lakes for fishing, canoes, kayaks and stand up boards," notes Larry K.
Fishing at nearby lakes: Multiple fishing spots within 5-10 miles of Heber-Overgaard provide trout fishing opportunities. "Woods Canyon Lake is just a short drive away to enjoy hiking and you are within walking distance to the Rim," shares Jessica C. from Mogollon Campground.
Stargazing: The high elevation and distance from major cities creates excellent night sky viewing conditions. "You can see so many stars at night, it's wonderful," reports Mike C. about his experience camping near Heber-Overgaard.
What campers like
Clean, well-maintained facilities: Campers consistently praise the upkeep of campgrounds in the area. "This place is a very well maintained campground. The sites are big. Your neighbor is not on top of you. They have bathrooms and showers which are very clean and always kept up," writes one visitor about Canyon Point.
Spacious campsites: Many cabins and camping areas provide good separation between sites. "Clean, very widely dispersed camp sites(lots of social distancing trees) especially in loop B (no electricity hookup)," notes Larry K. about his experience.
Affordable pricing: Several cabins offer competitive rates compared to other mountain destinations. At Mountain Retreat in Heber, Caylee H. says, "You definitely cant beat the price and its nice that the rate includes water, electric and sewage."
What you should know
Road conditions vary: Access to some cabin areas requires navigating rough roads. At Long Lake Dispersed Camping, Steve M. warns: "17 miles of dirt road from Highway to the lake and the last 7 are truly a challenge for anything other than a slightly lifted vehicle."
Reservation timing: Most popular cabin rentals fill up 2-3 months in advance for summer weekends. Frank J. notes about his Canyon Point stay: "Stayed six nights. Have small off-road trailer. Nice to be able to connect to electric a few days so didn't have to worry about solar panels."
Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience traffic noise or recreational vehicle activity. "The only downside was the constant noise from people in their side by sides running up and down Rim road all day, and into the night," reports Mike C. from his camping experience.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Families can enjoy safe swimming areas at several lakes near cabins. "We took a 3.3 mile hike to woods canyon lake. There is a marina and boat rentals are available," mentions Mike C. about his trip with scouts.
Cabin selection for families: Look for cabins with bathroom access for easier family camping. At Happy Jack Lodge & RV Park, Paul W. notes: "It was good. People make it their home and the spaces are pretty good size. Lots of trees."
Wildlife awareness: Properly store food in bear-resistant containers where provided. "They have grill, fire pit, and a picnic table and bear safe storage," explains Pablo S. about Rock Crossing Campground.
Tips from RVers
Electric hookup availability: Not all cabin areas provide electrical connections. Larry K. advises: "Loop B sites a little closer but still great and most sites have electricity."
Dump station access: Several campgrounds offer dump stations for RVs with holding tanks. "Amazing Campsite... They do free water and sewage dump. Not many sites do that," shares Chad S.
Campsite selection strategy: Book early for sites with shade during summer months. "The sites are very well maintained and for it being so big, you didn't feel cramped (although it wasn't full). Perfect site for our first camper tow," recommends H.Z. regarding their camping experience.
