White Tank Mountain Regional Park sits at approximately 1,900 feet elevation in the Sonoran Desert west of Glendale, Arizona. The park's desert trails traverse rugged mountain terrain with seasonal water features appearing after heavy rainfall. Temperatures can reach over 110°F during summer months, making fall through spring the most comfortable times for equestrian camping visits.
What to do
Waterfall viewing: Visit the popular Waterfall Trail in White Tank Mountain Regional Park after significant rainfall to see seasonal water features. "The waterfall only runs after heavy rain... There was water in the 'pool' and it is scenic so it was worthwhile to go despite no running falls. There are restrooms, a picnic area and a playground near this trailhead" (Lee D.).
Astronomy events: Participate in ranger-led stargazing programs with telescopes. "I've also joined two ranger-led hikes here (Black Rock Loop for sunrise hikes) as well as a county-sponsored astronomy night with access to multiple large telescopes and an astronomy presentation. Check the park website for their activities calendar" (Chenery K.).
Trail riding: Explore mountain bike trails at McDowell Mountain Regional Park with varying difficulty levels. "Miles of mountain biking trails which were spectacular. We've ridden lots of places and this is definitely one of my favorite. Trails are not technically difficult but a great workout and so pretty" (Mike M.).
What campers like
Spacious sites: Enjoy well-separated campsites that provide privacy. "The sites are far enough from each other so it doesn't feel crowded. Not much vegetation on the campground itself, so sunshine in abundance" (Ellen W.).
Clean facilities: Access modern restrooms with hot water. At Usery Mountain Regional Park, "Our site #48 Buckhorn was really spacious and private. Great views all around. Table and fire pit. The park has tons of trails for hiking and MTN biking" (Julie F.).
Desert wildlife: Listen for active wildlife, especially at dawn and dusk. "At night the coyotes sing you to sleep and also wake you up in the morning. You can also see the fountain from most of the campsites which goes off every hour!" (Larry G.).
What you should know
Limited shade: Prepare for full sun exposure at most campsites. At Skyline Regional Park, "The picnic tables did not have shelters as it gets quite hot in Arizona (the day-use pavilions were covered)" (Lee D.).
Reservation timing: Book well in advance for winter visits. "Sites fill up because it's so great so you have to book ahead. We had to camp in overflow area one night which was still fine then was able to grab a canceled spot" (Mike M.).
Water availability: Not all parks provide water access. "There is no water. Neither potable or non-potable... If you use Verizon, there is little or no signal most of the time" (Castaway I.).
Tips for camping with families
Nature center visits: Explore the educational facilities at Lost Dutchman State Park. "Nestled right at the base of the Superstition Mountains - this is a great location that is close to excellent hiking and riding. Also close to a unique drive out to Canyon Lake!" (Brad B.).
Equestrian safety: Watch for thorny vegetation when riding with children. "This would be the only concern for those traveling with pets. There are quite a few loose [cholla] even along trails" (Teresa A.).
Noise consideration: Set expectations for varying noise levels at different parks. "Didn't love the fact that people were blaring their music here until 2AM in the morning" (Brandon M.).
Tips from RVers
Setup planning: Position RVs strategically for optimal comfort. "The outer ring of the loop, you can literally hike right out of your campsite and be in the middle of everything. I will say however that had I have known a bit more about the area before visiting I probably would have selected sites 19 or 20 which are literally on the hiking loop for Ironwood" (Crystal C.).
Dump station access: Plan for dumping needs at WestWorld RV Park. "There is a dump station with potable water. There is also rest rooms with showers. Located in the center of North Scottsdale conveniently near lots of great dining, shopping and entertainment, for a reasonable price" (Al G.).
Site selection: Research specific sites before booking. "Highly recommend this park with spacious sites and great views of the Superstition Mountains and night lights of Phoenix. Carefully review the site you select to be sure it will accommodate your rig. Roads are narrow and there are unforgiving drop offs on the sides" (Terri D.).
