Good campground

I had no issues! A lot of the loops are one way, so if you're planni g on heading out early and don't want to bother those around you, then I recommend looking which sites are near the exit.

First time at this campground and we loved it! Had spot 247 and it was huge! No one super closer. Saw elk and deer throughout our stay. Close to the flush toilet bathrooms.

Sweet Spot

Really enjoyed this place. As our first time tent camping (as apposed to RV-ing) we had an awesome time here. Loved how spacious the sites were. Far enough from neighbours so there wasn’t too much noise. Bathrooms were clean and staff was friendly. Not too far of a drive from viewpoints. Would absolutely stay here again.

Mather Campground and the Backpacker Campsite

We stayed at this campsite during our backpacking trip through the Grand Canyon. We stayed specifically at the backpacker area of the campsite which is reserved for backpackers passing through the canyon. I believe that backpackers are only allowed to stay at this site one night to ensure that there is always available space for newly arriving backpackers. The fee for the backpacker campsite was only $5 which was payable at the campsite ranger station.

The campsite is a short 1/4 mile walk to the Market Plaza where one can find a grocery store, restaurant, restrooms and water. They store carries basic supplies that a hiker or backpacker might need. The prices at the store are higher than what one might pay at a traditional outfitter store.

At the campsite there are fire pits and fire wood may be bought at the Market Plaza store. Check with the ranger station or visitor center to see if a burn ban is in effect or not. There are bear boxes available to store food and scented items. If bear boxes are full, just ask the rangers for extra boxes and they will make them available.

The drive into the Grand Canyon Village and the Mather Campground allows you to pass through some beautiful pine forest. From the village and this campsite one can walk to shuttle services which can take hikers and backpackers to a variety of trailheads.

Location Plus

This campground is very close to the south rim of the Grand Canyon which is great!  Camping here is dry, no hook ups at all, which was disappointing.  There is potable water to fill your tank and a dump at exit.  Our site was unlevel on asphalt  and tight to squeeze into.  There was a fire ring and picnic table provided as well as vault toilets.

My fist solo trip found me here. It was clean and shady and my neighbors were quiet mostly.

The bathroom was close and clean.

I paid $18 for the night. It was 100 that day so very hot.

Busy but convenient

I stayed here during a summer camp trip that I was working for with several kids in a group site.  Overall pretty typical of a campground in a major national park, plenty of space, fire pit and grate with tables. I remember the trip as being a good one.

Location!!!

What is there to tell about Mather Campground that isn’t already known. Well, for one, the staff and Rangers are awesome. We arrived on the 3rd of July a day before our reserved stay without a reservation hoping that the last single “first come first serve” listed on the website was still available. We got here only to find out that it wasn’t. But - the great Rangers at the reception made it possible for us to still stay in a spot, they described as not ideal, but it was better than having to drive all the way out of the park again. In fact, it was still a better spot than we’ve had in other places before. Good size for our 27ft RV, separated from the road, wildlife views. Awesome!

Sparse but close-ish

Cool to be close to the canyon but you’re not that close really. There are no views from the grounds and it’s a 25 minute walk to the rim trail. Amenities are sparse. Pay showers at the entrance only and available only 6am-12pm. Hot hot hot while we were there but cooled down at night to sleep comfortably with a fan or two. Night skies are really lovely. Maple loop is at the very back and you can hear road traffic. Glad to have stayed but one trip’s enough.

Perfect get away

Went weekend before spring break and got in last minute and although semi crowded with snow on friday we had our own little get away. Couldn't have asked for a better place to camp and easy to get around the canyon. Campground bathrooms were open with outlets so it made the trip easier with the weather on the cold side. Book ahead could not make any extensions to stay when there which made total sense with spring break up ahead. Staff super friendly and helpful.

Awesome Campground

My girlfriend and I got lucky in reserving a site in Mather because it is pretty close to the viewing points in the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. As narrow as the campground road is, it is wide enough for RV and pickups to drive thru and park. There is plenty of parking to the viewing areas, but you can walk along the bike path from Mather Campgrounds to the viewing sites. They have flush toilets, a host, fire pits on every site, and benches to eat. We didnt have the pleasure of meeting or interacting with the host. We did notice how well organized the sites were kept.

Can't think of a better way to experience the Grand Canyon while camping..!

Located very close to many of the entry points into the canyon. Because of this it's very easy to go back and forth to stores and the canyon for anything you need. Also makes for a great way to stage your gear for any goals you have for going down into the canyon.

What's really cool even though you're within one of the busiest parks in the world, it does not seem like it while at the campgrounds - very limited outside noise from the dially traffic.

The campspots are clean and somewhat close together but this is not an issue since you're mainly here to see the canyon.

BRING YOUR BIKES..! One more extra that's nice way to experience this. It's like Seattle for how close everything is so there's many places you can get around the area just by bike. Fun way to see the canyon and avoid some of the dailly traffic since you take the bike trails.

Your gateway to Grand Canyon

I've stayed at Mather campground several times, basically, every time I go on a backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon. I love the campground, it's quiet, peaceful, spacious, and very private even though the site and pretty open. There's not a lot of shade, but there's enough trees to find a nice spot for the tent. Wake up in the middle of the night and look up at the sky, what a view!

The showers are great, especially when you come back from under the rim. They are coin operated, you need a dollar to have 8 minutes of hot water. The staff at the shower building is very nice and friendly and keep the facility in a great shape. The same building has the laundry, washers and dryers, also coin operated.

The Grand Canyon village has a number of dining options, from simple dining halls to fancy restaurants. And of course nothing can beat the view from the South Rim.

This is one of the most beautiful campgrounds I've been to. We got there later at night and had a little trouble finding it in the dark, and in a rainstorm. We were also having car trouble. The check in hosts were wonderful and helped me figure out getting my car serviced. Which, by the way, the service garage was in the park and had fantastic, helpful people. The sites were spacious and people around us were also great. I can't wait to go back!

Perfect Location to Explore the Canyon

This campground is right next to the Rim walk and village so it is the perfect basecamp for heading into the canyon.

There are bathrooms, firewood, separated sites, multiple loops, and large sites. We were able to do a group camp here multiple times. Feb, May, and October.

Be prepared for wildlife and crazy weather though. It snowed in May and was 80 degrees in October. There is always a constant flow of people coming in and out of the park so it was nice to have a bit of quiet in the campground just knowing what was on the other side of the trees.

The bathrooms are well taken care of and if you are missing anything you can hit up the general store to grab it...including ice cream after a long hike. This campground is perfect for the new camper. It has EVERYTHING you may need.

The Grand Canyon shuttle is really helpful for traveling to Hermit's gulch quickly bit otherwise they designed this campground great for getting around easily.

I would advise booking as far in advance as you can get! During Winter months the hiker/biker sites aren't available but normally they are $15. During the Winter months the tent sites are only $18 and are usually available last minute. Summer costs jump up to about $50 per night.
