Glamping in Seldovia, Alaska offers remote wilderness experiences with basic amenities. Water taxis and private boats provide the primary access to Kachemak Bay's secluded yurts and cabins, with Homer serving as the departure point. Seasonal operations typically run May through September, with some properties closed during winter months due to harsh weather conditions.
What to do
Tide pool exploration: During low tide at Homer Spit Campground, visitors can walk the shoreline examining marine life. "The tide goes out about 15 feet and comes back in regularly. It was a blast to walk out and explore all the tide pools at low tide," notes Laura H.
Water taxi adventures: Book transportation from Homer to explore remote locations across Kachemak Bay. "Homer is the place to get a water taxi to see Kachemak Bay, Halibut Cove, Seldovia, Nanwalek and Port Graham. Water taxi rides are roughly 75$ round trip for one person, give or take a few bucks and cheaper for kids," explains Aimee H.
South Grace Ridge Trail: Access spectacular hiking from Tutka 1 yurt. "Hike up switchbacks through the old growth forest, traverse the alder and grass transition zones, and find the alpine zone at about 1800'. There are spectacular views from the sharp ridges you encounter as you head N. towards the summit of the ridge," reports Morgan W.
What campers like
Beach camping simplicity: Campers appreciate the straightforward experience of tent sites directly on the sand. "It doesn't get much better than camping on a beach down on the Homer spit! It was nice to sleep on the sand though with air mattresses to avoid some of the rocks," shares Laura H.
Wildlife viewing: The opportunity to observe native wildlife enhances the glamping experience. "There is an amazing ocean and volcano view off a common ground area with a picnic table and fire pit. Eagles soar overhead," notes Jennifer G. from Whiskey Point Cabins & RV Park.
Yurt comfort: The elevated glamping experience of yurts provides protection from elements while maintaining a wilderness feel. "The yurt is spacious and comfortable with its padded bunks. Such a beautiful experience," states Morgan W. about his stay in Tutka Bay.
What you should know
Seasonal limitations: Most glamping operations around Seldovia run during summer months only. "Open 5/7/2019 - 9/15/2019" is listed as the season for Baycrest RV Park, reflecting the typical operational window for the region.
Limited road access: The single highway can create logistical challenges. "There is only one road in/out of Homer. There was a bad accident that closed the road for 24 hours so we had to wait another day to get out," cautions Steve C.
Bathroom considerations: Facilities vary significantly between locations. "The bathroom facilities were nice but a bit of a walk especially at night - we peed next to our car usually," admits Laura H. about beach camping, while others note some yurt locations have no toilets at all.
Tips for camping with families
Bring proper bedding: Sand can be uncomfortable without preparation. "It was nice to sleep on the sand though with air mattresses to avoid some of the rocks," advises Laura H., highlighting the importance of proper sleeping equipment.
Pack for variable weather: Coastal conditions can change rapidly. "Also be ready for any kind of weather, as you are surrounded by the ocean," warns Aimee H. from Alaska Adventure Cabins.
Consider transportation logistics: Moving between glamping sites and attractions requires planning. "If you're in a motor home you'll need a tow vehicle" since some locations are "9 miles from town," explains Ed J. about staying at Baycrest.
Tips from RVers
Site selection matters: Prioritize waterfront locations for the best experience. "Wanted a view of the bay so we paid $45 a night. This was for no hookups. They do have a dump station and water fill which is good," shares James B.
Expect compact spaces: RV sites throughout the area tend to be closely spaced. "Sites are a little tight but the views are amazing!" notes Brad H. about his stay at Driftwood Inn & Homer Seaside Lodges, while another camper described their experience as "very cramped."
Consider seasonal rates: Prices vary based on amenities and views. "Full hookups, beautiful view when the weather cooperates," mentions Ed J., indicating the premium paid for scenic locations with services.
