Be ready to hike it in primitive tent

My wife and I stayed for 3 days. The worst part was had to hike in about a mile to primitive camp and the spots are not well marked. One we got set up though had a great time beautiful spot. Then had to pack and hike out

Hidden Gem

This place totally surprised us with how nice it was! They accept Passport America, so a full hookup sight was about $9/night. $18 without Passport America. Sites are large and private. Many are pull through. We had our own kayaks and bikes, so we went kayaking in the creek and mountain biking on marked trails all in one day! Bath houses were older, but were clean and everything worked. This felt like a state park where you would pay $30/night.

There are swampy areas so it is somewhat buggy at dawn and dusk. I highly recommend the place and would stay here again.

In The Swamp Creek

This is a neat little campground that kinda sits between 8 mile and Saraland,AL. Not a very big area for you to camp if you have a pull behind or big RV. But people do manage to get the bigger camper and RV's in and parked. Could use a little more clean up in the three bathhouses and around the campground. Be a decent little stop for the night if you are just traveling through.

Cheap camping

Good campsites with lots of trails and hiking. Very nice open field and playground. Very well kept and maintained. There is a river with a beach and a swimming area. You can rent canoes. Only downsides are you have to go through some pretty shady areas to get there. They also do not allow alchohol or firearms even if you have a ccl. The canoe rentals go quick since the river beach area is for everyone not just campers. If you want peaceful camping in the woods for cheap this is it.

Cheap

Not one of my favorites but there Is a good size river to swim and kayak. It's very muddy and not in the best part of town. But if you need a spot of dirt to pitch your tent it ain't to bad

Perfect for local weekend getaway

Chickasabogue is a bit run down but it’s a great spot to get away from the bustle of daily life. There’s a sports field, water access, and several short, easy paths to hKe. It’s pet friendly and family friendly.

Peaceful

This is a nice campground. It has RV hookup, tent sites, and site with just electric and water hookup for campers or tents. We stayed in site 11. We had two large tents. Each site has picnic table and fire ring and small open type grill. Several bathhouses. Playgrounds ball fields and also a roped off swimming area. The swimming area has sidewalk almost to the beach area but the ground all the way to the sand is hard so wheelchair's, strollers, ice chest, and anything with wheels is perfect. Nice covered patios with tables near swimming area. Nice boat launch and plenty of fishing

Spacious sites, very good prices, things to do

There are a choice of sites, I believe they all have power & water hookups The dedicated tent sites are of course smaller, but you can also choose sites closer to the showers that are very spacious and can accommodate tents or campers for only $5 more. There are RV sites as well. There is hiking, a sports complex, a playground, a small beach area with roped off swimming and covered picnic tables, a boat dock and canoe/kayak rental.

I chose one of the sites closer to the showers because of the spaciousness. These sites all have a picnic table, fire pit and hibachi. The site I was on could easily have fit 4 very decent sized tents (6-10 person tents easily). There are hiking trails leading off from the site.

The ants were not a problem & definitely not as bad as compared to other local sites I've camped at. The only negative I have is that the sound from the nearby highway is definitely noticed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities are available at Chickasabogue Park campground?

Chickasabogue Park offers a range of amenities including sites with power and water hookups, full RV hookups (with Passport America discounts available), picnic tables, fire rings, and small open-type grills at each site. The park features multiple bathhouses, a playground, ball fields, and a rope course. Water recreation is available with a swimming area, beach access, and canoe rentals. The park also has hiking trails and mountain biking opportunities. Sites vary from smaller dedicated tent areas to spacious spots that can accommodate larger setups.

What do reviews say about camping at Chickasabogue Park?

Chickasabogue Park offers a mixed camping experience. The park features spacious and private sites, some being pull-through, with affordable rates (approximately $18/night for full hookups). Water recreation is available on the creek/river, though it can be muddy. The park includes hiking trails, mountain biking paths, a playground, sports fields, and a swimming area. Some visitors note the park is somewhat run-down and bathhouses could use better maintenance. The surrounding area is described as less than ideal, but the park itself provides a good escape from city life. Primitive camping requires about a mile hike with sites that aren't well marked.

Is Chickasabogue Park open for camping year-round?

Chickasabogue Park is currently temporarily closed. When operational, the park was typically open year-round for camping with various accommodation options including tent and RV sites. The park offered both primitive camping areas requiring a hike in, as well as developed sites with hookups. For the most current information about reopening dates and availability, contact the park directly through Mobile County's parks department.

How does Chickasabogue Park compare to other camping options in Saraland, Alabama?

Chickasabogue Park stands out among Saraland-area camping options for its affordability and diverse recreational offerings. With rates significantly lower than many commercial campgrounds (especially with Passport America discounts), it provides good value despite being somewhat rustic. The park's combination of water access, hiking trails, and mountain biking paths offers more outdoor recreation than typical RV parks in the region. While not as polished or well-maintained as some private campgrounds, Chickasabogue compensates with larger, more private sites and natural surroundings. Its location between Saraland and Eight Mile provides convenience while still offering a retreat from urban settings.
