The narrow, winding roads leading into Fort Pillow Historic State Park require careful navigation, especially when meeting oncoming RV traffic. Recent renovations have transformed this small Tennessee campground into a well-maintained facility with 11 concrete RV sites featuring 50-amp service and water hookups, plus additional primitive tent sites scattered throughout the wooded property.
Rangers make regular rounds through the campground, checking on campers and maintaining the facilities. The two bathhouses offer private suite-style accommodations with individual toilets, sinks, and showers, though each building serves only one person at a time. "The bathhouse was newer and clean," notes Shana D., though she warns that lines could form during busy periods.
Site layouts vary considerably across the campground. The concrete RV pads accommodate large rigs with slides, while primitive sites like the popular #4 require a short walk from parking areas but offer cliff-side positioning overlooking the Mississippi River. Several tent sites provide electrical hookups, though water access requires trips to communal spigots or the bathhouse. The mixed arrangement of different site types can create confusion, particularly when leaves obscure parking pad boundaries in fall.
Beyond camping, the park offers hiking trails leading to Civil War fort ruins, a small fishing lake with boat rentals, and a museum built into a hillside bunker. A playground and picnic area serve day-use visitors, while ranger-led programs include evening hikes and campfire gatherings. Cell service from major carriers remains spotty throughout the property.
For campers wanting additional options in the region, places to camp near Burlison provide alternatives with different access conditions.
