Best Tent Camping near Guernsey, WY

Guernsey has 4 yurts you can rent for $40/night. Clean, all have electricity. Bunk beds with mattresses and fold out futon couch. Wood fire stove if you need heat. Shared pit toilet, bring toilet paper. Picnic table with fire ring. Please buy all firewood locally, don't transport wood! Beautiful sunsets. You might be able to hear the artillery of the National Guard practice area when they are active - which is most of the summer. The best time we had here was during the silt run, which is in mid-July each year. Water being released from Glendo Reservoir will flow through Guernsey Reservoir flushing silt from Guernsey Reservoir into the canals of downstream irrigators. If you like mud, the reservoir is a ton of fun, as the water level is down 25'. Transporting kayaks through the mud proves challenging - don't fall down or lose a shoe. The reward is a fantastic, easy float of the North Platte river from the reservoir all the way to the edge of town. There was not another camper at the yurt and we saw no one on the river as boats can't get to it due to the mud.

Some of us still prefer to rustic camp in a tent with no amenities; listen to the sound of birds, wind, silence, to feel the night wrap around you when you sleep. Your mobile homes are too big for the rustic lake sites! You’re generators are ridiculous and loud. Take that to the RV site. This one camper was so big that it took up half the one way road, now people tear up the nice grass to get around a RV that was never meant to camp in these sites when the camp sites were built. Serious.

Waters Point is a small primitive campground with 12 tent sites, vault toilets and bench and fire pits but there is a fire ban at the moment. Not the prettiest area but not on top of each other.

Very green and well kept spot to camp with clean toilets and hot showers. Happened upon this place when local WY state fair staff told us their overnight camping lot was full, which was great since this one was free! We tent camped so needed ear plugs for the road noise, but worth it for the convenient location. Currently they have some limitations on when you can camp on the grass due to overnight watering, so tent campers beware.

Located in the city park, there are a few tent camping spots and about RV 15 camping spots, some with electric hookups. There is no charge, but donations are accepted. Water and dump stations are nearby. Individual sites are reasonably maintained but could use a little mowing and leveling. Dumpsters were available near all of the sites, which was nice. The park included a nice little miniature golf course, tennis courts, a skateboard park, pavilions, a small amphitheater and playground equipment. There were also public bathrooms that looked kept up on the outside, but we didn’t look inside. Also, the train tracks are very close, so expect a train or two during the night. Overall, a nice place to stay.

Esterbrook Campground is a great place to take the family. It is located about 30 miles from the town of Douglas and thankfully the road to the campground is paved most of that 30 miles and the last part is a gravel road but it is pretty well maintained. You can easily get there in a smaller sedan car. You can call ahead and get a reservation, however we didn't and still was able to get a spot. This campground isn't very busy, so you could always luck out and get a spot without calling ahead of time. The campground was pretty quiet, and we didn't have anyone to our left and right which was nice. Gave us some room! Before hand I did some research and they said they had potable water, however they did not. They had something that looked like it could be a potable water spot, but it was not in working condition. So definitely bring your own water. I would say that this campground isn't well designed, meaning you really are tent camping because they don't have very many amenities- they call it a "primitive campground." They also do not have a dump station. There is some hikes nearby, which we did one morning. Beautiful views from the top. You can also hike a little ways to a river close by where you can fish. I would say if you are looking for a place to get away last minute and you don't care if there is many amenities, then you would like this place.

Ranger Review of Larson Park Campground Wyoming.

Larson Park Campground is a city owned campground and is attached to the Guernsey golf course, so if you like to golf this one might just be for you. The campground has 15 sites RV sites with 30/50 power on shared power pedestals. These are back in sites all right next to each other. Their is a nice grassy area for tents. The grassy area as several picnic tables and BBQ grills, but not enough for every camp location. A pavilion has quiet a few picnic tables allowing you to eat get out of the rain, or in the shade on a hot day. The site has a restroom facilities and showers. A small play ground structure is available for the kids. Their are several historical sites in the area, a must see is the Oregon Trail ruts located just a short distance away. Be sure to visit Register Cliff just a few miles away and Fort Laramie is 30 minutes down the highway. The campground has a small store with friendly staff. Water is available, each shared pedestal has a frost-free for water.  Hookup sites are $20, Dry camp $14 and Tents $12.

Ranger Review of Ice Mule Cooler Pro Large (23L)

We used our Ice Mule cooler as our cooler for our trip to Guernsey Wyoming. Placed our snacks and drinks in the cooler with two ice packs at 6am Friday morning. Was amazed that this kept everything cold through Sunday evening. Being able to carry a cooler on you back is a nice feature. We are looking forward to taking this on our canoe trips this summer as this is going to be way easier than lugging a hard sided cooler from our canoe to campsite each day. The pack/cooler is also comfortable to wear making it useful to long day hikes on hot days. It is going to be nice to have a nice cold drink on a hike when it is 90 degrees out.

Decent park, sites are fairly spread out. Dogs not allowed on the beach areas and lots of rangers. Hot with very little share if in an electric site. Sites by the water don't have electric, but have shade. Zero cell phone service in campground, but pull 1/4 mile out and great service. Nice right on the water. Clean lake. Stayed in Sandy Beach campground at Guernsey State park.

We stayed at Colter Bay Campground in the tent only section site 134 F. We had a campervan and a tent and had plenty of space. As with many national parks, neighbors are a little close but not terrible. We liked our site location and would come back again. We were across from the bathrooms and the water and had a huge bear box with a picnic table and fire grate. We had some cell service, but not great as expected. Firewood is sold nearby in the general store. Tent only sites were great because there weren’t any generators. All facilities clean and nicely maintained. Definitely would come back.

We stayed overnight. When we got to the campsite on the beach we were so excited! Walked out to out our stuff down, and looking at the ground it was OVERRUN with giant ants! It looked like it was an apocalypse film with the critters. We moved our tent far away from the tree they were on and were able to set up shop. The facilities were okay, the lake was beautiful! Definitely recommend not camping straight on the beach unless you don’t mind ants and buggy critters.

Driving down US Highway 26 about 5 miles East of Ft. Laramie, you will find Pony Soldier RV Park. There are 52 RV Sites ranging from Electric and water to full hook ups. The sites for the most part are level and gravel and some shade. There is an area for tents. There are picnic benches scattered throughout the campground. There is a community area where there are 3 grills and a fire pit. They offer internet, laundry, restrooms/showers, and gift shop. There is also a history museum on the property. Julie(owner) is very kind and accommodating. There are trains and highway noise but you get use to it.

If you can't find a campground you need to not be camping. There are options ranging from Tent to Yurts. It really is a diverse place. Lots of big rigs with big boats at this place. The sites range from no electricity (which made it a bit louder with generators going at night) to 50 amp. Little dusty in places. We stayed in Sandy Beach and had a great view of the water which was perfect at sunset, but we also had the trains near as well. The campground didn't have flush toilets which is why most have their big rigs to use. The town itself doesn't offer too much and it looked as though most people were there to boat.
