Dog town!

Beautiful river! Instead of paddling down the river I'd recommend turning this into a nice float/fishing trip. They provide nice maps depicting where off shore camping sites are. We spent 3 days and 2 nights in the river in our canoe. Caught great fish and camping off the rice banks was great. Once again so many people were paddling through, I'm grateful we got to take our time and see all the great views from our canoe in 3 days. We stayed at the dog town campsite, very secluded, brig your bug spray! Theses sites are first come first serve. River meets up SW with the St Croix and finished our travels there. Can't wait to go back!

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I camp along the Namekagon River?

The Namekagon River offers designated off-shore camping sites for paddlers and recreational users. These sites are positioned along the river's edge, some near rice banks, making them ideal for multi-day paddling trips. Maps are available showing the locations of these riverside camping areas. The sites are designed for canoe-in access and provide beautiful natural settings with minimal development, perfect for those seeking an immersive river experience.

What activities can I do while camping on the Namekagon River?

The Namekagon River offers excellent fishing opportunities, with many campers reporting good catches during their stays. Canoeing and kayaking are primary activities, with many visitors enjoying multi-day float trips between camping sites. Swimming is popular during summer months. Wildlife observation, photography, and bird watching are rewarding as the river corridor supports diverse ecosystems. Rather than paddling aggressively downstream, many visitors recommend creating a leisurely float trip that allows time for fishing and enjoying the scenic river environment.

Is camping allowed near Namekagon Dam?

Camping is permitted in designated areas near the Namekagon Dam, but not directly at the dam structure itself. For specific camping options near the dam, check with the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway authorities who manage the area. The dam area serves as a popular put-in point for river trips, with camping opportunities available downstream as you paddle the river.

What permits do I need for Namekagon River camping?

Camping on the Namekagon River typically requires a free permit from the National Park Service, as the river is part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. These permits help manage visitor use and protect the river environment. Contact the St. Croix River Visitor Center or check the NPS website to obtain your permit before your trip. While permits are generally straightforward to acquire, having one in advance ensures a hassle-free camping experience.
