    Wild River State Park Campground

Wild River State Park Camper Cabin

The camper cabins at Wild River are located just above the St. Croix River. Our cabin seemed to be at a trailhead to the river, which we took advantage of. The camper cabins had electricity and heat, no plumbing. Excellent fire ring for cooking. The park itself has many trails.

    Wild River State Park Campground

One of the better state park campgrounds we've stayed at

We were at site 93. It's a large site with plenty of room for a huge tent or a few tents. It was very buggy so we got a screen tent. Nicely shaded site as well. Not far from the water station and pit toilet. For a bathroom with running water it's a long walk and there's not close parking either. The campground is a long drive into the park from the main entrance. 12x10 screen tent fit easily over the 8' picnic table.

Paint Rock Springs Campground — St. Croix State Park

    No service

Felt nice to spend a weekend without cell service about an hour away from home. Forgot to take my usual photos and video of the site all set up but had a few random to share. Nice campground. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. There are flush toilets and showers and the office has a store for any last minute needs.

    Wild River State Park Campground

    Solid option with star gazing

This is a solid state park offering. The sites are decently spaced with good tree cover. Noise seemed to travel between sites, I had some loud neighbors during the day but they settled down before quiet hours. The grass was easy to get tent stakes into. Bathrooms were your basic state park situation. Clean with warm showers so no complaints from me. The star gazing area was great! Intermittently had 1-2 bars of T-Mobile with LTE Internet. Wi-Fi is available at the park entrance.

    North View Campground

    Serene Serenity

Pet friendly and the perfect get away. Relaxing, quiet and surrounded by nature. We’re lucky enough to plan ahead and book for the fall colors. Highly recommended for those who respect nature, it’s beauty and the silence they encompass.

Old Logging Trail — St. Croix State Park

    Lots of mosquitos

St. Croix SP: was quite buggy due to a lot of recent rain. Highly recommend fogging your site or having a bug enclosure to help ward of the mosquitos. Multiple restrooms and showers throughout the campgrounds. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table and wood can be purchased at the office. Cell service is fairly spotty here so come with podcasts or shows downloaded ahead of time!

    Roam Base Camp

Rustic camping in the middle of Seeley Pass

Rustic campsites with easy access to the Seeley Pass trail candy. Lots of mosquitoes- so many it was hard to be outside and enjoy a fire at all, but also an untypical rainy weekend. Very quiet area in the middle of the Northwoods. Small sites with long grass around all the sides, which makes for a fair amount of ticks. If trail access was all we wanted, I’d give it 5 stars. On a rainy weekend, it wasn’t ideal. Must pay for showers.

    Lake Chippewa Campground

    Still One of Our Favs

As we arrived on a Saturday around 1:45 PM, there was quite the line of RVs checking in as most people come in for a week on Saturdays. As we have been here multiple times, we knew not to line up down the narrow road shoot that’s adjacent to the lodge where you check in but stay on the main road. They had plenty of staff on duty, so check-in was fairly quick, and we headed to site 457, which was an easy back-in with FHUs. We were pleasantly surprised we didn’t get site 456 right on the road. When we make a reservation for this campground(CG), you can only pick an area, not a specific site, for most of the sites. This was the first time we’d stayed in this area of mixed short-term and seasonal sites. The FHU facilities were placed in the middle of the gravel-grass site with a picnic table and fire pit. We were able to put out our back patio and have plenty of space to park our F450. There are a lot of mature trees in this park, so satellite is going to be iffy depending on the site. We were able to get an okay shot to the north for Starlink but no chance for the southern sky. You can opt to pay for the park Wi-Fi. The water pressure is good, and we had two bars on Verizon. The staff at the lodge/office is top-notch. We found out that this year’s“watch out” was kids riding electric bikes full out versus underage golf cart drivers of last year, so“watch out” in either case. The CG has been trying to police the lack of parental oversight, but this first-rate CG attacks a lot of families. Though there’s no formal dog park, there are plenty of areas to walk your dog, including the trail up and around the newer primitive camping area. Lake Chip is one of our favs, and we will continue to return.

    Lake Chippewa Campground

    Lake Chip Continues to Please

Our RV GPS wanted to take us through Hayward city central to the campground (CG), which was fine. However, as this was our fourth time staying at Lake Chippewa Campground, we stayed on Hwy 77 past the Walmart to hook up on Hwy 63 at the casino to avoid traffic and stoplights in Hayward. We arrived with no issues and during check-in we were delighted to find out we had other site options than the pull throughs for our 12 night stay. We had changed our reservations to an earlier date, and the only open sites at the time were pull throughs, which are not bad. However, there are much better sites in this CG. We were provided a map of available sites and a golf cart to check out sites. As we know this CG well, it was a no brainer for us to chose back-in site 460 with FHUs. The regulars who normally stay in this site had gotten an opening in one of the CG's permanent site areas. We happily proceeded to our site and had no problems backing in. The hook ups are in the middle of this long pad. Water pressure was good at about 50 psi. We did not opt for their Wifi, which you have pay for and later found out it doesn't work in this area anyway. We got 1 bar on Verizon and the signal was basically useless. There are a lot of mature trees in this CG and in this site in particular. We put our Starlink on the roof and we were able to get a usable signal. We would rather have a nice site with privacy than wifi or a phone signal. This site sits well off the road and has a large back yard area. Lake Chip is a large private CG but has a state park feel. They have lots of amenities such site side trash pickup, laundry, boat/kayak rentals, golf cart rentals, propane, and the list goes on. Eat at Powell’s on Round Lake about 15 minutes away on Co Hwy C towards Hayward. Good food and service.

What to do

Water recreation on Lake Chippewa: Lake Chippewa Campground provides pontoon rentals for exploring the lake. "We rented a pontoon for the day and beached it on one of the many islands the lake has," reports one camper who visited with family.

Tubing adventures: River tubing is available at several campgrounds in the region. The Hayward KOA offers this popular activity: "River tubing was the best. They shuttle you out and pick you up," according to a visitor who appreciated the convenience.

Hiking nearby trails: Explore the extensive trail system at Wild River State Park Campground. A visitor notes, "The park is huge and beautiful. We snowshoed and skied. I really enjoyed the snowshoe hike along the St Croix River and watched the full moon rise."

What campers like

Lakefront group sites: Lake Chippewa Campground features group camping areas with lake access. "We stay at this group site for a week every summer with our extended family. Plenty of space for our 4 RV's of various sizes plus tents/easy ups," shares a regular visitor.

Private, wooded settings: Many campers appreciate the secluded feel of Wilderness Way cabins. "It's very secluded and quiet. The owners are the best! There are tent sites, RV, camper cabin (no electric/sewage), and full cabins," according to a long-time visitor who's been camping there for 15 years.

Free watercraft options: Some cabin rental facilities provide complimentary watercraft. At Wilderness Way, "You can rent a pontoon or take out a canoe or rowboat for free. Great fishing too!" notes a satisfied camper.

What you should know

Reservations fill quickly: Popular cabin rentals in the Sarona area book fast, especially for summer weekends. At Lake Chippewa Campground, "They start their booking for the year on January 1st. We called all day long (4500 times not kidding) and finally got a spot."

Cash-only policies: Some campgrounds have payment restrictions. One visitor advises bringing cash: "Be aware they do not accept credit cards so plan ahead."

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies significantly between campgrounds. "We were not sure if this was a coincidence or not. Since our last stay, they had added a primitive/dry camping area and cut down on underaged golf cart driving," notes a camper at Lake Chippewa about changes to their internet service.

Tips for camping with families

Recreational amenities: Hayward KOA offers extensive family-friendly features. "Large 9ft heated pool, mini golf, large playground, horse shoes, volleyball, nice size water slide, covered stage for music, ice cream shop, huge jump pillow, and much more," lists a frequent visitor.

Kid-focused programming: Look for campgrounds with organized activities. "They also have themed weekends for the kids, and plenty of activities!" notes a Hayward KOA camper who appreciated the structured entertainment options.

Site spacing considerations: Family groups should consider how close sites are to each other. "Sites are close together, but that's okay, because everyone keeps to themselves," explains a visitor at Hayward KOA, while another notes, "Campground was kept very clean, even though it is an older campground. Only complaint would be that sites are close together!"

Tips from RVers

Site accessibility: Nelson Lake Lodge offers concrete pads for RVs but requires careful navigation. "The site was a little tight getting into with our 35' TT because of the approach. But we made it in with some direction from the campground host, and on lookers."

Hookup considerations: Full-service sites vary in setup. "The water spigot was shared with the site behind us but there was already a 'y' connection installed. Good water pressure. Had a little trouble getting our sewer hose to fit tightly," reports an RVer who found a solution by flipping the sewer donut upside down.

Seasonal camper atmosphere: Several camping cabins near Sarona are surrounded by seasonal RV sites. At Nelson Lake Lodge, "Our site was in a great location in the park and we were surrounded by some very friendly seasonal RV'ers. The other seasonal RVers were very friendly and seemed to be having a good time gathering together in the evenings."
