Hamma Hamma Campground

River access and hiking trail proximity make Hamma Hamma Campground a functional base for Olympic Peninsula recreation. Located along the Hamma Hamma River in Olympic National Forest, this small Forest Service campground sits about 9 miles north of campgrounds just outside Lilliwaup on a forest service road that can deteriorate during busy periods.

The campground's 15 sites spread through a forested setting with most offering privacy and room for multiple tents. Fire pits anchor each site. The Hamma Hamma River runs close by, though reaching the water requires navigating through brush and uneven terrain rather than following maintained paths. Swimming holes form in sections where the river widens, with water temperatures that become tolerable during summer heat. The Lena Lake Campground trailhead starts nearby, providing access to alpine lake hiking.

Pit toilets serve the campground but lack potable water, requiring campers to bring their own supply or source it elsewhere. The loop road shows wear from heavy use, and sites fill quickly on weekends since no reservation system operates. "A little cheaper, but no potable water," notes Elizabeth K. about the trade-offs here. Fall visitors often combine camping with mushroom foraging and catch-and-release trout fishing in the river's cooler months.

Visitors often highlighted the spacious, private sites in a lovely forest setting with river access and quiet atmosphere. A common theme was concerns about pit toilets becoming smelly and the lack of potable water on-site.

Lovely

Had a great time here. Nice private camp site, short walk to the river. Dipped our legs in after hiking. Restrooms were okay, by the last day they were a bit ripe, but hey...its a bathroom. Definitely plan going here again.

Olympic National Forest

Small simple campground along a little river on the eastern side of Olympic NP, easy to get to. Beautiful trees and close to some nice hiking trails. It will be busy since it’s the closest Olympic NP campground to Seattle. There is a nice CCC cabin with bunkbeds that you can rent nearby. While it is absolutely beautiful, if you can drive a little further into the park you may find less crowded sites.

Fern and Moss surrounded stopover

We snagged the last spot in this campground on a Friday evening. The setting was a lovely shady forest with a nearby river. We had a nice time, the sites were spaced out fairly well, despite it being a pretty small campground. There were nice fire pits and a few tent pads per site, although ours was barely able to fit two tents. The river is very nice, but it is surprisingly difficult to access from the campground even though is only a couple dozen yards away. The bathroom was pretty smelly and the loop road was in poor repair. This campground does not post a sign out when it is full, so we had folks driving through hoping for a spot for hours into the night. A little cheaper, but no potable water. There's water available at the next campground (Lena Lake), however it was out of order when we were there. Definitely some downsides, but we had a fun time, got decent sleep, and we're content enough!

Fall chantrelles

I love coming up here in the fall to catch a few trout (it's catch and release) and look for chanterelles. It's a chilly damp area, hence all the mushrooms. It's a small campground along the forest service road.

an Olympic Peninsula Gem!

Leave early on Friday and get a spot at the Hamma Hamma Campground! You can take a day hike to Lena Lake, or just explore the river from your campsite. It's such a great campground, we try to go several times each year. On a warm summer day there are some great swimming holes that are actually warm enough to enjoy! The sites are mostly private, and large! The bathrooms are pit toilets so they can get rough during the busy summer months, and there is no drinking water available, so be sure to bring your own water. But even with the stinky pit toilets, this campground is a real gem!
