What to do
Hike to Hamilton Falls: Jamaica State Park Campground offers access to a 3-mile trail leading to Hamilton Falls. "Find something that you dont like about this park... go ahead, ill wait. Small town general store, no cell service and a gorgeous back drop is a perfect spot to just unwind from the real world," notes camper Brittany B. The trail follows the West River on a gravel path.
Fishing at River Meadow: River Meadow Campground RV Park sits directly on the Connecticut River with fishing access. "My friend and I took my son fishing and we landed some nice size fish big enough it scared my 7 year old son and he made me real it in haha. He was amazed and so proud to have hooked it himself," shares Chris H.
Swimming at Branbury: Branbury State Park Campground includes lake access with swimming areas. "Across the street from the campground was access to the lake with plenty of grassy areas to hang out. And beautiful sunsets at night! A five minute hike- though it is quite a rocky, boulder-y hike- from the sites leads to a small river and swimming hole," according to Nicole E.
What campers like
Riverfront camping: Many campers appreciate sites near water. At Jamaica State Park Campground, "We managed to get a prime leanto site right on the river. We were only there for an overnight but we will be back. In the Spring the water is released behind Ball Dam, creating a white water adventure. The prime lean-to sites on the water are beautiful and spacious," writes M.A.D. P.
Small, quiet RV parks: Cannon Mountain RV Park offers a more intimate experience for RV camping near Sharon, Vermont. "This is one of our favorite trips every year! The campground is small, only 7 sites, but located at the base of Cannon mountain nestled next to Echo lake it's simply breathtaking! No frills but has full hook ups since 2016," reports Rhonda B.
Family activities: Sugar Ridge RV Village & Campground provides multiple recreation options. "Lots of great sites, clean, lots of amenities (almost everything) and activities. Can be tough to get into because so nice and popular in a good location," notes Rick G. Activities include mini-golf, pools, and playgrounds.
What you should know
Limited cell service: Connectivity varies dramatically. At Jamaica State Park, one camper mentioned "no cell service" as part of their experience. Plan for limited connectivity in most campgrounds throughout the region.
Mountain driving challenges: Road access to some campgrounds involves steep grades. When visiting Cannon Mountain RV Park, "If you aim to hike Franconia Ridge, on the weekend you can catch a shuttle from the Cannon skier parking lot. With a family, explore the Flume gorge, the Pemi trail, the Basin, and the New England Ski Museum," advises Jean C.
Site selection matters: At Dorset RV Park, "The sites next to us were not occupied which was nice because otherwise it would have felt a little tight. We did notice a bit of road noise when sitting outside. There are some really nice tent sites set away from the RV sites that sit under large trees and have nice space," according to Nancy W.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Multiple campgrounds offer children's play areas. "Nice little weekend getaway. Clean bathrooms, roomy tent sites, nice staff. Fun playground and nature area for kids. Very family friendly place with beautiful hikes to Hamilton falls," says Fransheska A. about Jamaica State Park.
Swimming options: Water access provides recreation for children. At Branbury State Park, "The day use section has a wonderful beach with a swimming area and boat launch. Large trees provide shade on a grassy lawn, and grills are available. The concession stand is open during day use hours," Lisa S. explains.
Pet considerations: For those bringing pets, note that campgrounds have varied policies. At Newfound RV Park, "A fun plus to the campground was the nature walk and stream on the property. This was a great place to take our dog for a quick walk. There's even a little 'wishing' bridge that crosses the stream," shares Luis F.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: Be prepared for uneven ground at some campgrounds. At Dorset RV Park, "Our site was level but some definitely were not. The hookups were all well-placed and we didn't have any issues with the electric," according to one camper.
Pull-through availability: Some parks offer easier access sites. "We enjoyed our stay at Newfound RV Park thanks to their laundry facilities, rec room, and quirky owner. It was a great place to explore Newfound lake from, as well as the Mill Fudge Factory. Our site was full hookup and a pull through site," Laura L. reports.
Seasonal operation: Most RV camping near Sharon, Vermont operates seasonally. At Riverbrook RV & Camping Resort, "The owners are super friendly and accommodating; the park is clean, comfortable, and convenient to adventures in the White Mountains; and the wifi worked great...especially when compared to other campgrounds we've been to," according to Corby M.
