The rough gravel road leading to Red Creek Campground keeps crowds lighter than more accessible spots, though competition for the 12 sites remains fierce during peak season weekends. Set within Monongahela National Forest at the edge of Dolly Sods Wilderness, this primitive campground operates from mid-April through December when snow doesn't block forest roads.
Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and lantern post, with vault toilets centrally located on the camping loop. The water pump no longer functions, but a small spring provides fresh water that campers should filter before use. Sites along the outer loop offer more privacy among trees and undergrowth, while inner sites remain more exposed to neighboring campers.
"With no ambient light, the night skies are amazing," notes Dave V., and multiple trails lead directly from the campground into the wilderness area. The Blackbird Knob trailhead sits just 20 yards from the entrance. Bear Rocks provides sunrise views accessible by a short drive down Forest Road 75. Spring brings mountain laurel and azalea blooms, while late summer offers berry picking along trails. Fall colors draw photographers and hikers to the high-elevation plateau.
Weather conditions change rapidly at this elevation, often running 15 degrees cooler than surrounding valleys. Strong winds can challenge tent camping, and trails frequently turn muddy after rain. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis at $11 per night, with cash required for the self-service station. Cell service remains unavailable. Mountain bikes cannot enter the wilderness area, though the forest roads accommodate cycling.
For those planning extended stays in the region, campgrounds near Cabins provide additional options with different access requirements and amenity levels.
