Riverside Camping

We stayed at the Riverside Camping through Hocking Hills Adventures. It was car camping and very crowded but it was reasonably priced and not too far from the major hiking areas. About 25 mins from Old Man's Cave. The road to get to the campsites was extremely muddy and it took quite a bit of maneuvering to get our Civic back there. Only a 4 wheel drive could go through the mud and even that was iffy.

Just up the road is the Family Center that has lots of activities for everyone to enjoy and any supplies you may have forgotten at home. The staff was also pleasant. Dog friendly.

Appalachian Trail Section Hike

We were very lucky to obtain a perfect spot on the top of Mount Roger's during our section hike of the AT. It provided amazing views for both sun up and sun down and was a great place for pictures. A wonderful breeze swept through our tent at night to keep us cool. It is a very popular camping destination so there's no privacy and plenty of noisy neighbors but it was fine by us. The night sky was one of the most memorable moments from our trip. I've never seen so many stars! Also has quick access to running spring water for drinking and a quick wash up.

Car camping

Mohican has a wide array of first come first served car camping sites right on the river. It makes it difficult to grab a spot in the summer. It's very crowded but for good reason… it is a beautiful area with access to water, picnicking, and plenty of hiking trails. A wonderful place to visit and camp.

Beautiful Adventure

The views at Dolly Sods are incredible. Plenty of open plains that allow site seeing but also forest cover for great camping in wet conditions. We saw plenty of wildlife! There were many private camp sites to choose from but none are marked… you just find a fire ring and flat ground and pitch your tent. The only reason I gave it a lower rating is because it was SO WET. I'm talking mud up to our knees. We were prepared to be wet, but this was totally unavoidable and by day 3 our feet were soaked beyond belief. If we ever go back it will be in the dry season!

A Favorite

We've been backpacking into the campground for years and it's always a beautiful adventure. There's plenty of streams to filter water from, a lush fern forest, and the best part, of course, is the lake! There's many trails in the area that offer different destinations and views so there's an adventure for all kinds of people waiting at Allegheny National Forest.
