Olympic National Forest's US 101 corridor holds Klahowya Campground, a Forest Service site set along the Sol Duc River in the forested lowlands near Beaver, Washington. The campground runs two loops, and reviewers consistently recommend the sites on the river side of the road, particularly the loop containing sites 1 through 20, where several spots have short trails leading directly to the rocky riverbank. Site 7, for example, sits close enough to the water that the river sound carries over the highway noise from US 101.
River access is the defining feature here. Campers use the Sol Duc for tubing in summer, fly fishing, and swimming in the deeper stretches. A family of river otters has been spotted from the bank. Melody P. sums up the appeal: "Ride all day long through the ONP and cool off in the river." The campground also sits directly across the highway from an access point on the Olympic Discovery Trail, and a short interpretive walk called the Pioneer Trail runs through the property with historical markers.
Klahowya fills on summer weekends, particularly when nearby campgrounds on Lake Crescent reach capacity. Several reviewers arrived after being turned away from Fairholm and found open sites here. Weekday and shoulder-season visits tend to be much quieter. October visits have been reported despite the posted September close date, though the Forest Service lists the campground as open year-round. No cell service is available. Some sites include electrical hookups, and the campground accommodates large rigs. Amenities include drinking water, a dump station, firewood, and vault toilets, though toilet cleanliness has been inconsistent during peak periods.
No pets are permitted. Campgrounds near Olympic National Forest vary widely in amenities and access, but Klahowya sits in a particularly accessible position for exploring Forks, Neah Bay, and the western reaches of the peninsula. Nearby dispersed options include Olympic NF Dispersed near Klahowya Campground and Forest Service Road 29 Dispersed Camping Loop for those who prefer fewer neighbors. Klahowya works well for campers who want a maintained site with water access and a base for driving the peninsula's northwest routes.
