Dense foliage creates natural barriers between sites at this Hudson River campground, where cottonwood trees provide overhead cover and campers report frequent wildlife sightings. The access road requires attention, with multiple reviewers noting patched and bumpy conditions before reaching the smoother internal loop roads.
Sites accommodate RVs up to 50 feet with electric hookups, though water access requires walking to designated fill stations throughout the campground rather than individual site connections. Kevin C. notes that "sites are all within 200 feet of the bathrooms," which feature large shower facilities and maintain consistent cleanliness according to multiple reports. The bathrooms include dishwashing sinks and book exchange shelves.
The boat ramp provides Hudson River access, though campers should watch for wakes from passing vessels that can create hazardous dock conditions. Hiking and biking trails wind through the property, with some leading to wildlife viewing blinds where visitors spot bald eagles and other birds. A large playground serves families, while the day-use area offers river views not visible from most campsites. Train tracks run nearby, contributing occasional noise during the day.
Cell service varies between carriers, with AT&T typically showing one bar while some campers successfully use satellite internet from open sites. Staff delivers firewood and ice to sites upon request. Campers exploring the area can find places to camp near Schodack Island State Park for additional options.
The campground works well for RV campers seeking full hookups and river access, particularly those comfortable navigating rougher entry roads and comfortable with moderate ambient noise from river traffic and trains.
Description
Schodack Island State Park sits off the eastern shore of the Hudson River just south of Albany. Approximately seven miles of Hudson River and Schodack Creek shoreline bound the 1,052-acre site. The park has been designated a State Estuary, and a portion of the park shelters a Bird Conservation Area (BCA) that is home to bald eagles, cerulean warblers and blue herons that nest in the cottonwood trees. Eight miles of multi-use trails wind through a variety of ecological communities. In addition, the park has an improved bike trail, volleyball nets, horseshoe and a kayak/canoe launch site.
