Swimming enthusiasts and creek lovers will find Central Campground positioned along Travertine Creek within Chickasaw National Recreation Area. This tent-only facility operates without electrical or water hookups at individual sites, though restrooms with running water serve the campground. The National Park Service manages reservations and welcomes pets.
The campground sits close to the main road but maintains tree cover around its perimeter. Multiple reviews emphasize the exceptional cleanliness maintained throughout the grounds. Paul W. notes that "ice cold Travertine Creek, quick dips or extended swims are mere steps away" from most sites. The spring-fed water provides relief after hiking area trails, which connect directly from the campground.
Central functions primarily as a group camping area with open spaces between sites rather than individual privacy. Peak periods like July 4th bring significant crowds, though staff maintains organization during busy times. Cell service varies across the property. The facility lacks shower facilities, so campers should plan accordingly.
For those seeking additional amenities or hookups, Rock Creek Campground — Chickasaw National Recreation Area offers different options nearby. Central works best for groups comfortable with basic facilities who prioritize immediate creek access and don't mind road proximity.
